yes Elton didnt want to appear in videos anymore and he wanted to help out his friend Downey after downey was having trouble getting work after his drinking and drug problems so Elton put him in as a stand in to lipsink the words in a video which Elton said was supposed to be a tribute to the beatles sound and to the IMAGINE video which John Lennon put out in the 70s....the video was done in one continuous shot.

@gemini16th Elton John said when they were trying to think of which actor to use, RDJ was perfect, because it so closely mirrored his own life. This was his first job once he actually started to get off the drugs.

Nothing "more" about it. Elton John has always been one to extend a hand, and his first movie back, Mel Gibson paid the insurance guarantees he could have the role. A lot of other stars did their best to help him get back on track.

In fact, Elton helped Robert getting out of drugs and going through rehab, just what Elton John had to go through a decade before, so I guess he felt sympathetic.
