  • ...was a monster piano player, as well.

  • His time on earth with us was brief but whilst here he burned like a supernova. Thank you God for giving us Shawn Lane and may his genius be a perpetual testament to the possibilities life and imagination gives to us.

  • very cool

  • All guitar roads lead to Shawn Lane

  • THE BEST ONE!

    LIVE FOREVER!

  • Lane...truly...the undisputed master of the electric guitar.

He sits atop Mt. Rushmore along with Alan Holdsworth as the definitive titans of the six-string.

  • his left hand reminds me of malmsteens...strong

  • It's so hard for me to watch Shawn play at this late point in his life. It's just sad how his health just took such a bad dive.

Still, it's amazing that he was able to play like this. I've heard that by this time his arthritis had gotten so bad that he could barely move without pain. Only music could help him ignore it apparently.

  • This whole concert should be released on DVD! Contact Jonas Hellborg at Bardo Records and send him an email! The world needs to see this concert............

  • I am a 54 year old guitarist-have seen in concert in my lifetime Vai, Van Halen, Malmsteen, Satriani, Holdsworth, McClaughlin, DiMeola,Methany, Joe Pass, et al. Why is today,2/9/2011, the FIRST time I have ever heard of this guy?

  • @samueldd0616 IGNORANCE WHAT ELSE

  • @samueldd0616 It only goes to show-ignorance is NOT bliss!

  • @samueldd0616 Why didn't anyone notice the greatest electric guitarist to ever pass through this world? You tell me and we will both know bro...

  • Is that Holberg on bass????

  • WTF is spiritual knowledge ?

  • @pobinr yeah right hehe

  • he's the shawn lane of guitar...

  • 99.9% of the world cant express themselves the way this man could, let alone have such a powerful medium in which to convey it.

  • Listening over and over...

  • Allan Holdsworth... kick anyone's ass

  • @dragondix shawn surpass baby...!!!!

  • i tend to have an ear for things but anyways in my opinion when ive listened to this many times the beginning sounds very similiar to frank zappas solo in stinkfoot. not saying there the same or have anything to do with eachother, but just pointing it out

  • El "Che" en la guitarra!

  • ....you are deeply missed

  • @ 1:45 minutes: "Oh, time to kick ass - gotta lock the cigarette..."

  • theres a lot of guitar players that are so good that simply make me want to stop playing, but shawn was so good he was inspriring.. now thats rare.

  • Mozard esta muerto, Chopin tambien Shawn Lane es una pena pero tb y yo empiezo a encontrarme mal jajajajajajaja.... No he visto nunca a nadie mejor que Shawn

  • i know it's hard to smoke without hands ... But i think smoking while playing a shawn lane solos is a bit harder !

  • Not even cigaretts can stop this solo. I'll just use legato or play over the neck

  • the trippiest thing ever seen

  • yea when you see how fast he can shred, you understand why each note played slowly is priceless :)

  • from a completely different planet - the very best ever.

  • he doesnt use his pinkey to much, but i guess when your 3 fingers count as seventeen that doesnt really matter

  • @connord12 - he doesn't use it on purpose, he talked about how much easier it makes all the patterns when you have 3 notes per string in each position.

  • is shawn using a fender amp here?

  • @TheKirkYates yeah i think it's a blues deluxe

  • what is the name of this tune, anyone?

  • It's called Juvalamu, it's on the Michael Shrieve album "Two Doors."

  • @mistrynp Its more commonly known as Personae, which is also an album.

  • haha he shares a smoke with his guitar!

  • damn, I love this tone, how does he get it. Reminds me of holdsworth's metal fatigue tone. Like the mids have been scoped out something really cool about it.

  • Hating on Shawn Lane is hating on God. That is, if there is one.

  • ...and you know what?,

this guitar must have told itself: 'I`m the most fortunate of them all as I`m been played on by Shawn Lane!!!'

  • That`s got to be my favorite video of Mr. Lane, the ultimate music hero

  • i think he was growing in talent .with every note he played

  • beautiful vigier -- ordered mine a few days ago...

  • That's cool, did you order the shawn lane model? I'm not sure what color i like more!

  • The exact model, actually. I got it to the same specs. Was not cheap haha, but I am waiting to get it in a few weeks!

  • @MrFusionGuitar

Make sure you upload a video of yourself giving it a test drive :D

  • I spoke to the UK distributer, and i asked him if there was a differnce in tone between the master and the standard and he said that the master was slightly warmer sounding, would you agree? i think i like the natural wood finnish more though!

  • Yes, I would agree. If you like the finish more however, I think you're better off just getting that, because it's not that huge of a difference.

  • I find it rather tragic that Shawn passed not too long before the whole Youtube explosion. If I were a betting man, I'd bet the house that Shawn would have seen a surge in his success (in terms of show attendance) because of the exposure that these videos have given him. RIP friend - you're one in a million.

  • in his later years right before he died he used a lot of different amps like the fender you see and a line 6 flextone as well he could get his tone from any amp however

  • My hero for sure. In the guitar world, none surpass this man. Too bad he's not there anymore. Thank god for sharing this video and the many other ones as his talent continues on...

  • Pretty damn cool. Too bad he couldn't put those smokes away as I gather they certainly didn't help him in the long run. A talent that was taken too early to be sure.

  • Incredible. . .

  • I have never seen a better comment on youtube!

    Excellent!

  • This man was a True Genius and had a wealth of spiritual knowledge. One day, the world will recognise Shawn Lane as the greatest Guitarist of all time.

  • That's a very optimistic thought, but it's up to us to get his name out there in the open so people know about him.

  • @RoadWarrior2006 See that's what I'm afraid is probably not likely to happen(the world recognizing him as the greatest of all time).... Because as we evolve as a whole planet, technology, mainstream, and "image" seem to brainwash us everyday.

  • Its funny how people rate guitarists by their tapping and sweeping speed. shawn uses pure phrasing-power and speed and blows away the competition

  • This is really great to see. I've only heard Shawn play in more structured settings, as in his stuff from Powers of Ten album. It's amazing just to hear him shredding away. What a terrible loss to the music world. :( Thanks for pasting this video!

  • the chord changes on the bridge are beauitful. what tune is this?

  • It's called 'Personae'. There is another version on here some where, but its out of sync :(.

This has got to be one of my favorite guitar solos of all time though, holy shit.

  • The Greatest Guitarist that has ever lived - Shawn Lane.

  • 4:50

    ouiiiin

    what a mystical power

  • Monstreux... feeling, technique, monstrueux... Hein mon Francky ? :)

    -

    sharo

  • you can tell by how sad and beautifully haunting this song his how close he was to death.

  • this guy makes a lot of great guitar players sound contrived.

  • woah, he looks like the Ayatollah Khomeini crossed with John Lennon, but more powerful than both put together

  • lol ^^

  • I will have to respectfully disagree... Generations cried when Lennon died... There's not many like him... Shawn Lane is a fucking G though.

  • i'll have to disagree with you lennon was great in his own aspect but to compare him to shawn lane is an insult. only a few can even be put side by side with shawn and that'd be hendrix and jason becker (even though he's still alive his will to live is incredible)

  • For anyone wondering about his tone, I've had some good luck with the Carvin V3 head, Carvin Vintage Series Speakers, and the Yamaha DG Stomp. It takes a lot of tweaking but that's the closest to that tone as I've ever heard.

  • Looks like he's playing through a Bassman though...

  • 5:42 he's thinking billy gibbons la grange zz top tribute for a few measures.....this is one of my favs solo's now after 35 years of listening to leads on guitar.i seem to come back to it alot

  • Billy Gibbons fell out of his chair when he heard Shawn Play for the first time!!! I love that story...

  • Yes, but is it a true story? And if so, did Billy hear Shawn's interpretation of 'Sharp Dressed Man'? That would be even more cool :)

  • Look at that cigarette- just like Frank Zappa.

  • Which scale is he playing ?

  • lol during his solos he's probly using all the notes

but this song is based in C-minor mostly

  • a nice guitar sound for a great chorus

  • wonder why the pick didn't get on fire

  • That's actually a great idea for a music video!

  • Ill bet this is just so easy for him ha ha. Look at him. He isn't even phased by this. It is so intimidating, and inspiring at the same time.

  • I think i lost lost my atheism.

Shawn, you are my new God.

  • not getting the cig in place the 1st. time sent him off to greatness

  • This is the coolest thing ever.

  • wow! tone ,speed and soul

  • Modifier, thanks for sending me the link. I'll add it to my favorites!

  • and a cigarette ;)

  • I think this may be my favorite Shawn Lane video yet...

  • his guitar is having a smoke! hahaha

  • the fucking far out, man.

  • The cigarette next to the nut was the cherry on the fucking cake.

  • the

    best

  • Mount Crushmore. :)

  • Jimi Hendrix just dropped his joint... Vais leatherpants are wet... Satriani is even balder than before... MABs Lamborghini just crashed... Slash cant even break his guitar... Gambale's sweeping tears... Malmsteen can't even speak swedish-english... Gary Moore didn't wake up this morning... Gilberts drill can't keep up... Gilmoure just met the wall... Eric Johnsen just joined the Cliffjumpers of Dover.... Man.., what a solo..!
  • Håvard, I love you almost as high as Shawn!

  • hendrix picked up his motherfuckin' joint, lit it again and is now joining in the heavenly jam.

  • @P3AC3B0Y and Allan Holdsworth?:DDDD

  • @AtanasovPeter He just lost his Guitar Head. Good lord! It's true :O

  • @P3AC3B0Y Allan Holdsworth is the god father of fusion guitar and no one can match with him. There is no one on this planet that is so original like Allan and Shawn was a big fan of Holdsworth all his life time.RIP shawn we miss you.

  • @P3AC3B0Y I notice you didnt mention Holdsworth...

  • @P3AC3B0Y

    50th thumbs up! Winner!

  • @scottj2112 Thank you all, folks :D I must give some credits to my pal though, he made some of the lines!

  • @P3AC3B0Y ROTFL GOOD ONE

  • channeling some hendrix there.. crazy shit..

  • I will get that tone. The force is telling me.

  • :) What a tone it is!

  • This video is an absolute gift! The playing he does here is not only jaw-dropping, technical and intense but it's so spiritually inspired; he is entirely immersed in the music and communicating so forcefully with his guitar.

  • this confirms everything for me about Shawn. whichever heaven you believe in, that's where he came from.

  • Don't even try to tell me he was human...

  • SHAWN,the best ever

  • Greetings..

    Shawn Lane...Brilliant

  • I saw buckethead on that same stage a month ago.

  • that run at 4:51 and on is impossible, i miss shawn

  • Yeah it's insane! And all the while he is holding the whammy bar, which for most people would make it a lot harder to remain clean.

  • fuck, i love shawns shit.

  • 3.00 = A worrying amount of speed and skill

  • Does anybody know what picks he used?

  • dimarzio pf-with low magnetic pull

  • I think dunlop jazz 3s

  • does anybody know the name of this song

  • mongobongoman: The song is called "Personae," and my favorite recording of it is from the 2002 album of the same name.

  • will do

  • You know that when he put that cigarette he was going to let rip :p

  • I meant 2:20

  • It gives me goosebumps every single time.

  • 2:25 vid time--WOOOOww!

  • he is so good

  • i like the image with his cigarette billowing smoke out from the neck of his guitar

  • he is God's own definition of awesome

  • Simply the best.

  • I was at this show. What an amazing experience! I remember walking into the state theater and hearing Shawn warm up. There are few musicians that I've heard of that has the ability he had. Just about everything was improvised during the show except for the main melodies of course but the solos all improv! He is one of the best of the best. I am so glad I got a chance to meet him and hear him play live.

  • R.I.P shawn, monster of a player

  • I saw him play in Charlottesville Va. in the late 90's and what a humbling exp! My friend and I got at the gig about 3 hrs before it started and Shawn was doing his sound check and getting baked while warming up for about 45 minutes!

  • Like going to your favorite wilderness area. A force of nature.
