His time on earth with us was brief but whilst here he burned like a supernova. Thank you God for giving us Shawn Lane and may his genius be a perpetual testament to the possibilities life and imagination gives to us.
It's so hard for me to watch Shawn play at this late point in his life. It's just sad how his health just took such a bad dive.
Still, it's amazing that he was able to play like this. I've heard that by this time his arthritis had gotten so bad that he could barely move without pain. Only music could help him ignore it apparently.
This whole concert should be released on DVD! Contact Jonas Hellborg at Bardo Records and send him an email! The world needs to see this concert............
I am a 54 year old guitarist-have seen in concert in my lifetime Vai, Van Halen, Malmsteen, Satriani, Holdsworth, McClaughlin, DiMeola,Methany, Joe Pass, et al. Why is today,2/9/2011, the FIRST time I have ever heard of this guy?
i tend to have an ear for things but anyways in my opinion when ive listened to this many times the beginning sounds very similiar to frank zappas solo in stinkfoot. not saying there the same or have anything to do with eachother, but just pointing it out
Mozard esta muerto, Chopin tambien Shawn Lane es una pena pero tb y yo empiezo a encontrarme mal jajajajajajaja.... No he visto nunca a nadie mejor que Shawn
@connord12 - he doesn't use it on purpose, he talked about how much easier it makes all the patterns when you have 3 notes per string in each position.
damn, I love this tone, how does he get it. Reminds me of holdsworth's metal fatigue tone. Like the mids have been scoped out something really cool about it.
I spoke to the UK distributer, and i asked him if there was a differnce in tone between the master and the standard and he said that the master was slightly warmer sounding, would you agree? i think i like the natural wood finnish more though!
I find it rather tragic that Shawn passed not too long before the whole Youtube explosion. If I were a betting man, I'd bet the house that Shawn would have seen a surge in his success (in terms of show attendance) because of the exposure that these videos have given him. RIP friend - you're one in a million.
in his later years right before he died he used a lot of different amps like the fender you see and a line 6 flextone as well he could get his tone from any amp however
My hero for sure. In the guitar world, none surpass this man. Too bad he's not there anymore. Thank god for sharing this video and the many other ones as his talent continues on...
Pretty damn cool. Too bad he couldn't put those smokes away as I gather they certainly didn't help him in the long run. A talent that was taken too early to be sure.
This man was a True Genius and had a wealth of spiritual knowledge. One day, the world will recognise Shawn Lane as the greatest Guitarist of all time.
@RoadWarrior2006 See that's what I'm afraid is probably not likely to happen(the world recognizing him as the greatest of all time).... Because as we evolve as a whole planet, technology, mainstream, and "image" seem to brainwash us everyday.
This is really great to see. I've only heard Shawn play in more structured settings, as in his stuff from Powers of Ten album. It's amazing just to hear him shredding away. What a terrible loss to the music world. :( Thanks for pasting this video!
i'll have to disagree with you lennon was great in his own aspect but to compare him to shawn lane is an insult. only a few can even be put side by side with shawn and that'd be hendrix and jason becker (even though he's still alive his will to live is incredible)
For anyone wondering about his tone, I've had some good luck with the Carvin V3 head, Carvin Vintage Series Speakers, and the Yamaha DG Stomp. It takes a lot of tweaking but that's the closest to that tone as I've ever heard.
5:42 he's thinking billy gibbons la grange zz top tribute for a few measures.....this is one of my favs solo's now after 35 years of listening to leads on guitar.i seem to come back to it alot
Jimi Hendrix just dropped his joint... Vais leatherpants are wet... Satriani is even balder than before... MABs Lamborghini just crashed... Slash cant even break his guitar... Gambale's sweeping tears... Malmsteen can't even speak swedish-english... Gary Moore didn't wake up this morning... Gilberts drill can't keep up... Gilmoure just met the wall... Eric Johnsen just joined the Cliffjumpers of Dover.... Man.., what a solo..!
@P3AC3B0Y Allan Holdsworth is the god father of fusion guitar and no one can match with him. There is no one on this planet that is so original like Allan and Shawn was a big fan of Holdsworth all his life time.RIP shawn we miss you.
This video is an absolute gift! The playing he does here is not only jaw-dropping, technical and intense but it's so spiritually inspired; he is entirely immersed in the music and communicating so forcefully with his guitar.
I was at this show. What an amazing experience! I remember walking into the state theater and hearing Shawn warm up. There are few musicians that I've heard of that has the ability he had. Just about everything was improvised during the show except for the main melodies of course but the solos all improv! He is one of the best of the best. I am so glad I got a chance to meet him and hear him play live.
I saw him play in Charlottesville Va. in the late 90's and what a humbling exp! My friend and I got at the gig about 3 hrs before it started and Shawn was doing his sound check and getting baked while warming up for about 45 minutes!
...was a monster piano player, as well.
