  • Great to see this. Thanks!

  • Gencer was a great Aida! Thanks for the upload!

  • WOW, I had never heard this singer before. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Absolutely wonderful!

  • This is why they called her La Regina!

  • Awesome

  • BRAVISSIMA, BRAVISSIMA!!!!!!!!!!

  • GREAT!!!

  • Absolutely stunning!!

  • oh yippeeee. thanks for posting this wonderful soprano that I had nearly forgotten about!

  • yeah well that's a new one, the ability to forget Leyla Gencer

  • Anita Cerquetti.

  • this is the best rendition of this song!!!! She just upped Callas hands down!!! I love Gencer b/c she has a voice of her own. Which only the greatest of Divas have conquered. Her pianissimo are similar to that of Caballe.!!

  • Ahahah! I can see that. Although L.Price's voice is a bit too husky for me to listen to after so long. I do have Price's "Prima Donna" album and let me assure you it is the best of everything from her! She even sings stratospheric Ds, Eflats, and E naturals from famous arias! Making them her own in that powerful voice of hers!

  • Price had a lovely (and powerful) voice indeed. She however only uttered those high notes in the studio, never on stage.

Everything Gencer did (or Callas for that matter), she did live on stage. 72 roles from Werther, Gioconda, Macbeth and Medea to both Leonoras, Lucia, Gilda, etc, etc...

  • And Price also sang beautifully into her 70s. She made different choices to preserve her instrument. Gencer and Callas burned white hot, but not for very long. Doesn't mean Price was any less a singer.

  • @FoggyRoad81 Gencer not for very long? She sang nearly 40 years!

  • @sezgin86 I stand corrected, I tend to only see footage/recordings of her made during the 1950s-60s, where is her work in the 1970s?

  • @FoggyRoad81 50s and 60s were the most productive years of Gencer. There are many recordings of her even from mid-80s here on Youtube. Just search! Even I have uploaded one of her arias from Roberto Devereoux, 1974.

  • @FoggyRoad81 Indeed: first recital 1946 in Turkey, last 1991 in Italy = 46 years.

First complete opera 1950 in Ankara, last 1983 in Venice = 34 years.

As for the quality of her voice, Gencer still had a ringing D in alt in 1975 as witnessed in Poliuto recorded live in Barcelona.

  • @yodavidnavarro Perhaps.. Listen to callas live 1953 performance of Aida at Covent Garden. this aria is beautiful.. Price however to me defined the role.

  • Price defined the role? Off course! Price is obviously the best Aida!

  • She is fantastic! I love everything she does!

  • Love 6:05 to end! Love pianissimmo to swelling forte!

  • Very nice bel canto!

  • Gencer was one of the greatest Aidas ever, it is your loss that you can't appreciate that, maybe it's your speakers, or maybe it's your ears, but she was a truly fabulous Aida. And she did have a big career outside of Italy

  • look, Leyla Gencer doesn't need you, take your Price and Tebaldi and go away, you can google her career if you want but nobody cares

  • Brava!

  • Comment removed

  • Check the clip "Leyla Gencer on Maria Callas" on youtube (it won't let me post the link). She basically says that Callas "She had greek tragedy in her veins, she was born with it; the Callas myth continues because she did very great things; she had a magnetic presence on stage that made you forget everyone else; it is a great talent, a gift of God... I think I have it too... :-)))!"

  • gencer copying callas??? you are seeing visions... you also have some nerve to say anyone is copying callas, with that username of yours. what a joke

  • it was just a comment and thats what its thats all thank you...

  • In vocal terms and quality of voice. Gencer was miles ahead of Callas!

  • I wholeheartedly agree. Callas had a powerful mafia and the press behind her. Her strident wobbling has been sold to us for 50 years as the ideal....when much greater sopranos put her to shame.

  • VERY freakin' nice job.... she sang the aria and let the music and the words say it all- it's wasn't really about HER instrument- she did a fabulous job! Loved the last note- even better considering this was a live "Arena di Verona" performance & she probably had a bug or two around her face during the aria!

  • She is the best Aida in this area at the least and simply that I ever heard - indeed. Brava....

  • Better than leontyne price!?!?! You are insane.

  • well said.

  • Very, very nice! Intelligent phrasing, lovely tone. Doesn't try to beat it to death like some other divas I could name! One of the best I've heard (although Leontyne still OWNS the role.) Still, much better than some other bigger" names." Brava! Thanks for posting this!

  • I love Gencer in this repertory... I hate all the glottals in the belcanto and dramatic coloratura, and plus her coloratura is not so accurate.. But this is sublime.!

  • Now be fair. When is there ever a perfect live performance? His glissandi are glorious, and her pianissimi are every bit as stirring as Caballé. And that final phrase, taken without a break, is simply flawless. Name a current diva who wouldn't be thrilled with that performance.

  • Many of Price's performances of this aria live were perfection.

  • WOWOWOWOWOW!!! What an incredible singer! Thank you for posting!

  • There is a good reason why there were calling her La Regina at La Scala which is known to have a very demanding core audience. Get a clue, will ya!

  • @TheInquisitive4Ever She was called "La Regina" because she regularly sang all 4 queens. I personally think, "La Diva Turca" was a greater compliment.

  • Some of us or their families have more access to segments of society than you ever will during your feeble existence. I am neither a Shcwarzkopf nor Gencer fanatic but recognize their contributions to the greatest art form every created by man. Now get lost you little wannabe.

  • You're a righteous little fiddlestick. Do you even read the nonsense you're blurting out? Your head is stuck so far into your rear you've lost your bearings.

  • Not only was she under-recorded, Ms Gencer was clearly under-appeciated and often under-rated. At her best she combined the passion and drama of Callas with the lyric ability of Tebaldi. She was incomparable as Maria Stuarda.

  • The approach to technique, and attitude towards excellence in developing the technique, methods of learning, approach to voice production...that should be enough? Being in comptetition with someone doesn't prevent civilized people to respect and learn from each other. Those were more civilized times than the one in which we live.

  • Moreno-You're consuming oxygen you senile dimwit. Go get your medication.

  • Grazie Gabba02!Bellissimo omaggio a una grandissima artista!

  • What most people do not know about Gencer is this: Elisabeth Schawarzkopf and Montserray Caballes used to consult with Gencer to learn from her. Yes! You read correctly...I said Schwarzkopf...as perfect as she was, she considered Gencer a poineer of the art. Gencer was a true artist. Never gave into commercial pressure and remained a pure artist.

  • as well as Crespin.

  • I don't doubt you speak the truth about

Schwartzkopf. I would, however, like to know the source of your statement. Caballe, while direct rivals with Gencer in the 60's and 70's in their Donizetti heroines, at least shared bel canto in common. It is fascinating to contemplate WHY Schwartkopf would have anything to do with Gencer since their repertory was almost entirely different, with the exception of a few Mozartian roles. As you well know, Schwarzkopf by the mid 60's became a leider singer.

  • Quis-If Ms. Schwarzkopf were still alive, you could have ask her why she did. All I know is that she did. It is not uncommon among intelligent to learn from each other. The less than intelligent one are known to make nonsensical comments though.

  • While you were reading biographies, some of us had direct access to information and knowledge. Now keep on reading! lol

  • This clip is enough evidence for me: Leyla Gencer deserves to be remembered as a very great artist. She is nearly perfect in this most exposed and demanding aria, notoriously treacherous to navigate and keep going...Verdi left absolutely no place to hide, and we understand when we hear many artists falter a bit here or there. Again, her singing here is as close to perfection as any I have heard! Brava Diva! R.I.P.

  • Moreno-You're succeeding in proving to us all that you're an old Mexican scum who has been wasting oxygen on this planet.

  • Moreno2394 I don´t wanna be rude but I´m feed up of your insults towards La Sultana. This is a lack of respect from you. So behave yourself fuckin´ faggot. I wanna kick your ass, son of a bitch. I was tolerant towards your mediocre comments but all of us have had enough from you. Get a life you piece of shit.

Lucluc1000, my argentinian pal, don´t waste your time with that bastard.

Brava Sultana, Prima Donna Assoluta. Leyla gives a masterclass in this role.

  • You are so disrespectful of great artists it's shameful you write like this in Spanish on You Tube, shame on you, clean the wax out of your ear, she was a fabulous soprano, a great Aida for the ages, this aria is sung beautifully, in every way!

  • viejo puto y senil

  • Moreno it's your "alleged" 80 yo mexican brain that is mediocre.

  • More racism from Inquisitive, Moreno has big issues with Gencer and not with her singing, but it has nothing to do with being Mexican...

Inquisitive don't you understand, it's quite simple, you are racist! you show it again and again.

  • Leyla, in paradisum deducant te angeli et in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres !

    Hans NL

  • Repose en paix, Leyla.

  • Au revoir, Madame.

  • At 26 january 1957 sang Leyla Gencer the the role of the second priores in the word-premiere of the "Dialoques des Carmelites" by Francis Poulenc. On CD you remains some parts of this. Listen to it and you will get tears in your eyes. Leyla was a great artist.

    Hans from NL.

  • Leyla had the same problem as other beautiful sopranos at that time. The media-hipe between Callas and Tabaldi made everyone blind for the othes sopranos. Think for instance at Virzinea Zeani or (my favourite)Magda Olivero.

  • Hola Portbaires

  • bravisima turca

  • Leyla Gencer is still able to mesmerize in black paint and dressed in lame. The audio quality is good for a LR recording. And this is an excellently delivered performance.

    Good Aida is Good Leyla.

  • Brava Turca!!! Kolonamed, don´t waste your time, moreno2394 is deaf. Brava Sultana!!!

  • Well put, Callas! Of

Perhaps poor, deluded moreno2394 has something personal against La Gencer. I simply can't think of any other reason for his visceral, petty and baseless slandering of a great singer. Lack of taste alone can't explain the bitterness and spite he's shown. Perhaps he can enlighten us...

No me conoce y opina...pobre infeliz.

  • not very exciting, but a "quite very good" voice

  • u must belive me :i have seen some worst aidas(live in arena)...for me she isn't so terrible in singing...but like i sayd not exciting, totally not impressing and the voice is quite too small for aida in arena

  • but for me not so terrible like u say...

  • I am sorry I didn't want to offend you

  • no , i'm not angry...just a little touchy...

  • and if u use a bit of rispect is better: i'm going to school but i'm not "baby" and u don't know me and if you want rispect from me give the same, please

  • I really do not know on which your judgements about Gencer are based? Are you opera singers? I guess no! You would make more professional arguments otherwise. She has a great talent, which is not deniable in the history of Opera! She contributed the opera history by developing the "Genceretti" thechnique.

  • Ok. Given the level of English written by you, i recognized that i'm in front of a person who should develope (and revise) not only his opera knowledge but English level as well. I can understand that you make some mistakes that a non-native would do. But what does "on history mean." You should learn many more things until it comes to Gencer.

  • probably she is pushing couse she haven't the voice enough big for Arena... you can't compare her with the true great aidas like E Marton or M Chiara but like i sayd i don't think she is a disaster: couse i've seen disastrous aidas and they where worst...

I think she don't have the voice for doing aida but in other roles in my opinion she had a good voice, and i'm still in my opinion... thank tou,,,, bye

  • Eva Marton is a great singer but she sang Aida very few times at the begining of her career and she dropped it, she never was a great Aida and Chiara is fine but she couldn't sing the triumphal scene, her voice was not big enough for that. The greatest Aidas are other sopranos

  • Moreno, what do you think about Virginia Zeani? She didn't record much either (BTW, Gencer did record an 11" LP for Cetra). Do you dare call her mediocre? Quite frankly, had Maria Callas failed to be Maria Callas, Gencer would have been who we know today as Maria Callas.

On a side note, what are you accomplishing by trampling on Leyla Gencer, both the singer and the person?

Viejo patetico.

  • The most important aspect of any type of singer is the ability to transmit emotion and feeling - essential in an opera singer. Gencer was never a perfect singer and pushed her voice to sing what was given to her - but aren't we glad she did! It is a shame that different opinions and tastes don't seem to be respected but i suspect that everybody will just ignore these comments and continue to be thrilled by one of the greatest theatrical singers of the 20th century.

  • Primero aprenda a escribir: Schwarzkopf.

  • Moreno...please, Gencer's Norma at the Teatro Colon was GREAT!!!!!! She is one of the best singers of the XX century...Her Stuarda is the best as well...and she has a very powerful voice... I agree with Maometto. A lot of great singers talk great about her, among them Sutherland, Barbieri, etc...

  • for me the best soprano!! Thank you so much for posting this 1963 performance only heard the -66..before

  • I love the rich quality of Gencer's voice, it's such a unique timbre: creamy, dark and heavy and at the same time silvery, bright and smooth. She obviously knew she had a heterogeneous voice and used that to the best effect! Her style and musicianship are undeniable and always impeccable. Her singing sounds so simple, authentic and natural, that is what a real talent does! And her extremely pure pianissimi are irresistible... ;-)

  • moreno2394, you might be wrong. Cause she had unique pianissimi(also known as "gencerato")and great bel-canto technique. And she still has. Believe me even she is over her 80s. Do me a favour and listen her La Gioconda aria. Then we talk about little sounds, o.k? But thanks anyway.

  • We are talking about singing, you might have different opinion. Unfortunately I do know about voices and registers. But it would be really unnecessary to discuss about something we will never agree. Anyway thanks for writing those personal memories.

  • Yes, a mediocre and ill voice that sang Aida, Norma, Anna Bolena, Tosca and almost all famous difficult roles in most of the great Opera Houses in the world. That's quite weird... In fact, I think YOUR EARS must be ill, because I can't believe 99% of the Opera fans would be wrong in worshipping this woman even if she NEVER had a huge hype favoring her.

  • Um, she sang at Vienna State, San Fransisco Opera, Covent Garden, Rome, Naples, Verona, Florence, etc. Gencer had quite a substantial voice. It was not small whatsoever- it's just, in a period when most sang f, ff, and fff, she chose to follow the dynamic markings written by the composer.

You mistaken barking with effective scatto. No great power? Second donna? Hm. You can't sing Normas, Elisabettas, Aidas, Lady Macbeths, Forzas, Vespris, etc at La Scala, the way she did, and be mediocre.

  • She's got a luxurious tone and silky pianissimo. What I also appreciate is her sense of vulnerability and deep insight in the character.
