  • hey im gonna perform soon at my school is there any tips you can give me? like what to eat and what not to eat? im gonna perform an AC/DC song. so i really need your help. oh and i have an hyper active gag system. so its hard

  • Hii!´Yesterday is was at a party with really loud music so i screamed alot and now i´m a bit hoarse, And tonight i have to perform. Help me!

  • @rawrrBrendaa Sorry I didn't see this in time for your performance. How are you doing now?

  • @singbabysing I'm okay now!

  • @rawrrBrendaa That's good to hear. Also, for future reference, here is something about hoarseness that might be useful for you: singingmastermind(dot)com/voice-problem-hoarse-throat/ You have to type in the dot before the com because YouTube will not allow links inside the comments text. That's why I encourage people to go to my singingmastermind(dot)com site for more help. I can answer questions better there and direct you to more helpful resources.

  • how do i find the most powerful parts of my voice

  • @TheFirestarter701 You find them by feeling what the tone feels like inside of you rather than "listening" to your voice. It's all about vibration, freedom and the release of joy.

  • @TheFirestarter701 You find them by feeling what the tone feels like inside of you rather than "listening" to your voice. It's all about vibration, freedom and the release of joy.

  • @TheFirestarter701 Thank you for the response I will be trying this from here on out.

  • sweet. real nice, quick lesson.

  • @sasquatchsoul Thanks for your kind words. Anything I can help you with?

  • Very good. I believe that after many of those exercises all pupils will be able to sing from Purcell to Hindemith without difficulties.Perhaps.

  • Wow! Thanks. That's quite a compliment.

  • "and you can do that, wherever you are"

Can I take positivity lessons from you instead? Maybe diffusing negativity 101? Voice is getting better already.

    Much love.

  • I like that idea. Positivity Lessons. Awesome! I'm still working on getting something going for online lessons that are more in-depth.

  • "and you can do that. wherever you are"

    HAHAHAHA!! You are awesome!

  • Thanks. Yes, we can sing and project our voices anywhere we are, even in the kitchen or garage.

  • i like the crow part

  • Thanks. Now I'm listening to blue jays and learning.

  • what is the goal of this exercize: to understand something or to do something better?

  • that was fun! thanks for the tutorial

  • thanks!

  • You betcha!

  • These videos are great. They're a lot of fun to watch, and very helpful! And, when you make the "caw" sound, my parakeets get all excited and chirp lots! :)

  • should the sound of the "ng" change if i were to pinch my nose? Does this mean im singing through my nose?

    Youre awesome BTW

  • It does change if you pinch your noise, but why would you do that? :)

    Thanks for your encouragement, BTW!

  • Thanks! Can you help with voice cracks?

  • Your speaking voice doesn't sound like it is in chest. I know that sounds strange, but the tone sounds like it is in your head voice. Is that just where your voice is naturally placed? Anyhow, great tutorial!

  • Good question. I always tell people to "aim" their voice like it is a golden thread that goes between your top two front teeth. Every voice has a low/mid/high register. The "chest" voice is part of the low register and I do sing there but encourage people to strengthen their middle voices and work up and down from there.

  • thankyou it really helped, i have trouble with straining (N)

i love how you teach you make it so fun :)

  • thanks so much

  • wow! i love singing and this really helps! thankyouu!! also, is it u singing that song at the end? because its so nice!!

  • Thanks, and yes, I sing everything on these videos. :)

  • i like the way u teach

  • Thanks. I have lots of fun with it.

  • hello ur a great teacher and i love ur vids

i have problems reaching a higher a pitch, my voice just crack n i cant continue. do u know how could i practice to improve that?

    thanks

  • Thanks. Cracking comes from not knowing how to change registers (going from low to high or high to low). You have to discover EXACTLY where your voice is cracking when you go up and down. When you find that place, go slower and softer through it. If it keeps cracking, stop and go slower and softer. Keep relaxing that area until you can get through it without a break.

  • (I don't think she heard you...Idiot)

Nah I'm just kidding, you're all right!

  • wow thanks I love your video!

    x

  • Thanks.

  • do you have any videos on vibrato? By the way, I would love for to be my vocal coach!!! You just have such a wonderful outlook and attitude!!

  • when i singing must i expanded my diaphragm?pls may i know?

  • Yes, keep it expanded as long as you can without getting tense in your throat.

  • she weird but funny lolz

  • lol !

  • what is a range? and how do i find my range?

  • Range is how high and low you can sing without your voice breaking or without your throat hurting. Find it by first discovering where the center of your range is. Do this by singing a note without thinking about it. Where is the most comfortable part of your range? In other words, what notes are easy to sing for you?

  • i want to take singing lessons do you know any good coaches??

  • every time i sing my throat hurts how do i get rid of that?

  • This is a common problem. It comes from trying to push out the sound rather than releasing it.

It also often happens that when we sing a higher note we think we have to push it to get it out. The cure is to learn how to use compressed air. Try my slow leaky tire video for that.

  • Thanks for sharing this cool tip:)

I have problems with projecting my voice.

Any tips on how to make my normal speaking voice louder?

    Thanks,

    The Puck

  • Hi Puck. Thanks for your comment. Speaking voice will increase in volume as you do these exercises. Send the sound to the front of your top teeth. Release it and don't push it.

  • your sweet, thank you!!! :)

  • Thanks, sweet you!

  • I'm an aspiring singer and I think it's great what you're doing. You've helped me.

  • I love it how the sounds you make are so simple, yet effective in what your trying to get us to think about...other lessons I've read/seen/heard, have been more about 'thinking' and 'analysing'. Whereas here I GET the anatomy side of it coz I'm using and feeling it as opposed to being shown a picture of it. Anyway, thanks alot.

  • I just sent you a comment but YouTube didn't post it. Your message means a lot to me because I think singing should be the most fun thing in the world to do and once people can have access to the concepts, it's amazing what they learn to do!

  • Haha Mrs Singing Lessons you really are awesome. =D

I'm trying to follow your tips but I hate my voice so much...

    Thanks for all the lessons!

  • I love the new title you gave me but please don't hate your voice!

  • This was definatly worth wathching. Very Very funny.

  • Glad it made you laugh! Thanks for recommending it.

  • omg you embarrise yourself :|

  • Totally. And all for the good of everyone else!

  • Usually, how long will it take for the voice to improve after practicing everyday?

    I'm kind of excited!

  • Big smile!

  • Great!

  • is this women off her rocker?

  • Definitely! Totally rocking on getting real lesson tips out to people who'll never have a chance to get help otherwise!

  • wow....i think so

  • Hope these help you....and your friends!

  • It's a daily habit for me. You too?

  • hi its cool that u post these lessons to help out people like me =] but i was wondering.. i honestly have a really bad singing voice...ESPECIALLY when i try to record myself lol i can't listen to the whole song it's so bad... on the vid i sound very nasally and moany.. my sound is not strong... can taking lessons like these make my voice enjoyable, even on video? and if so how long does it usually take dor one to develop a decent singing voice? thanks again

  • There's no "usual" time it takes to improve your voice because everyone is totally different. I'd try working with all my videos for a month or 2 and see if you notice an improvement. Someone just wrote me about doing the lessons for a month with GREAT results so give it a try!

  • These lessons are very good. My parents must think I'm crazy though.

  • That's ok. Show them the lessons sometime and maybe they'll join you!

  • youre like my mom!!!!!!!!!!!!youre pretty dammit:) youre an awsome lady by puttin this here!

  • Thanks!

  • shes's so kind to post this video and not promoting something, unlike others.. she reaaly wanted to help aspiring singers out there

  • Thanks so much for your encouraging words and let your friends know about these lessons too!

  • hahahahaha it making me laugh xxxxxxxxxx yo uar eso sweet putting these up

  • I loved your comment and answered it way back when you sent it but YouTube didn't post it. I hate that when that happens. It makes me feel like people will think I'm not answering them when I am. Sigh.....

  • I WISH YOU WERE MY MUSIC TEACHER :(

  • I am...online!

  • You're are wonderful woman for putting these lessons up on youtube. :-)

  • I'm finding a bunch of comments that I answered by that YouTube didn't post and your's is one of them. Thanks again!

  • I'm singing this afternoon and I wanna thank you for all those lessons you gave because I use 'em as my warm-up... Do you have any other warm-ups if ever? THANKS!!! =)

  • I have other warmups that I sell as downloads.

  • you are so cool! Thank you so much for putting the time into this! It helps me so much!

  • I know I wrote back to you but it didn't post. That seems to happen with YouTube quite a bit. anyhow, thanks so much for writing and I hope you'll tell all your friends.

  • i have a problem projecing my head voice. i have a strong chest voice, but whenever I lead into my head voice from my chest voice, I lose my voice completely. I do have a head voice though, whenever i don't sing with my chest voice first. What can i do to improve my transition?

  • Very good question having to do with your register shift. I just started writing an article about it so I hope to post it soon.

  • Hi, I'm new to your videos and I love to sing. I just have a quick question: Whenever I sing with my brother he tends to really drown me out because I have such a quiet voice and he has such a loud one. What can I do to be heard when we sing together?

  • You may need to talk to him about balancing out with you. Encourage him to sing softer so that you can sing a bit louder. Ask him to listen more to the overall balance of what you sound like together because it's not a solo situation. Also, think of your tone going through a tunnel in front of you & you're sending the sound into the spot at the end of the tunnel.

  • these videos are extremely generous of you. I find it hard to project without tightening my throat and expanding my lips into a smile-kind of shape. do you have any suggestions?

again i can imagine you're kind of busy with these videos so i wont take it personally if you don't respond.

  • Go to my website, use the google search tool on the site and type Joy's Starting Tone. Got to that article and read it. Then explore my site and find my other articles, pictures, etc. to help. And thanks for your comments.

  • Hey, your videos are very helpful, but I', just starting to get into singing and my throat tenses pretty often. Am I doing something wrong or is it just part of the "breaking in" (if there is such a thing for vocals), thanks

  • Thanks. A tense throat is a common thing when people are just beginning to learn about singing. Go to my website and type in the search box there "starting the tone." It will give you some good answers for this question. And feel free to read other articles I've written there too!

  • Will do. Thanks.

  • You betcha!

  • i'm so glad you put this up for everyone to learn for free.

i don't have the money or the time to get a teacher, for i study and have a family, but i get extra cash by playing on pubs.. i needed to learn to sing..

thank you so much, i will put all my effort.

  • Glad to help. I am working on getting an affordable subscription site up too, for people who have been asking for more help. Not sure how that will work, but I'm hoping it will be really great!

  • Another question: when trying to project s there a higher

likelihood of doing damage to you vocal chords?

I'm not clear about all of the things that can lead to

damaging ones voice. Could you cover what causes damage to

your voice and how to avoid it in one of your lessons.

    Thanks

  • These are great questions. If you haven't already done so, read my article on "Starting the Tone" at my website and then get back to me.

  • I read a lot about "controlling" the breath and exhalation.

Your "leaky tire" leads me think that I'm using air efficiently

to create the sound versus create a loud sound (project).

Is the idea to let the microphone project the voice? Or is

projection more relevant if you are singing without a mic?

Does projection use significantly more air and require

    different breathing?

    Thanks

  • It's always best to know how to utilize the breath to its full capacity with or without a mic. That way you can control how loud/soft/near/far you want your voice to be. Projection is not necessarily loud. In simple terms it jsut means that you are able to get the full effect of resonance and send your voice further with less effort

  • wow, yeah great point about projection. not to get too technical but I kinda think that projecting is basically "pushing" the right frequencies(hi or low)...certain frequencies project better..for example, when mids are "scouped"(taken out) of a guitar it may sound good alone but with a band, it just doesn't cut through the mix...same thing with voice sorta, i think its all about what frequencies your voice can naturally push

  • You've made a good observation about the connection between the guitar and the voice. Be VERY careful with the idea of pushing though. Think of a small stream vs. a powerful river. The river doesn't push itself towards the sea. The sea pulls it by gravity. Let your voice be pulled out of you rather than pushed out.

  • WOW, yeah what a great analogy(sea vs river)! That reminds me of not trying to "color" my voice into something its not,....as much as i love wearing my influences(and heroes) on my sleeve I have to remember to just let MY voice do the work rather than trying to take it somewhere else...thanks again!

  • You betcha!

  • FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • I just found you today for the first time! I REALLY appreciate that you're doing this! Thank you so much.

    Going to your website now...

    (*CaCaaw,CaCaaw,CaCaaaaaw!*)

  • THANKS! Enjoy and tell all your friends!

  • Excellent lessons on how to sing. 5 stars easy

  • Aw, so nice of you to say so. Thanks.

  • so can you like make a video and show me what u mean like when i get to a certain point it feels like there is something in my throat preventing me to go any higher how can i help that.

  • It's not really something I can show in a video. I could help you if we had face to face lessons, but that's not possible at the moment.

  • i sing for a band its an emo band but i need to know how to project my voice so it can hit high notes and i really need your help cause i don know what to do and i dont want them to be mad or dis appointed....

  • The best thing I can say is that when you go high, there's a place where your voice will want to crack because of tension in your technique. The best way to get up there is to relax the muscles in your throat, around your vocal cords, etc. when you find that spot. Then "slide" through it gently. Also, don't let other people put pressure on you. That can really hurt your voice.

  • I have a quick question. I always have trouble projecting my voice, the piano is sometimes louder than I am, and I have an audition on monday for my camps play. I really want to nail my song, but I'm scared that I might not be loud enough. How can I sing louder? I know, sing from the diaphgram, but what does that mean! Thank you.

  • If you're playing the piano, play it softer so you don't have to force your voice. If someone else is playing it, ask them to play softer for the same reason. Also, if you pick a point at the back of the room, just above the judges' head and focus on singing to that point, it will help.

  • Thank you! =]

  • You betcha! Let me know how it goes and good luck!

  • Thanks (-:

  • You're welcome! Be sure to make use of the resources on my website in the new redesign area and tell all your friends about what's available for them too!

  • How can i get a voice like Amy Lee from Evanescence??

It looks like she doesnt even try to sing, like it just is there.. If you dont know who she is go to Evanescence and click on one of their songs.. Her voice is amazing!!

  • She's got a good technique for a pop singer...sounds like a bit of Irish background. Remember that there is only 1 voice like Amy Lee's and that belongs to Amy Lee. If you have a strong alto voice, you can learn to sing with power and beauty that will belong only to you!

  • speaking of Amy, I love the songs but it bugs me that she always goes for that "operatic" sound which is (in my opinion) TOTALLY out of her range. I mean, to me, singing is just talking with different pitches, so the way she REACHES for those high notes doesn't seem very natural. Also, look up one of her live performances, she's talking HUGE gulps of breathe, hence being out of her range...what do you think?

  • I think your thoughts about singing being like talking with different pitches is quite astute. Lamperti, a fantastic voice teacher from a long time ago said this, "Singing is speech, 1000 times refined." And gulping air is never a good thing for singing. It takes too much effort.

  • um, not be sarcastic but what do you mean by "astute", its defined as keen or discerning but it also says it can be shrewd or stubborn? lol...I'm kinda generalizing about the speech thing, (continued on next comment)

  • Astute in the sense that you are discerning something about peaking and singing that shows an awareness of the true & natural connection between them.

  • wow, that means A LOT coming from someone like yourself that has a TON of experience...i mean, i won't let me head get big, lol...but its really hard to talk sense in to people, especially in the trenches(the local music scene)...people are always like "nooo dude, thats stupid or thats sell out , whatever..." thanks for the great affirmation!!!! fer real!

  • You betcha! Don't let ANYONE discourage you. EVER!!!! You have to be the BEST of who YOU ARE!!!!!

  • ok, I'll DEFINITLY try not to get discouraged, thanks so much for ALL you info you so graciously provided me with! It made me feel really good, like I am on the right track with my observations. Its sort of an affirmation thingy? thanks again!!!! :)

  • You betcha! Also, a bunch of people have been asking me if I can give more personalized help for a fee so I'm putting together an affordable subscription based service and am asking everyone to let me know what they think about that.

  • but my whole thought is being musical and using a vocal style that is not only different but pragmatic as well. ie- being able to pull it off live, having stamina without feeling yer gonna die, lol..I just think people try to hard to veer away from the same voice that makes them unique? looking forward to yer reply! :)

  • Absolutely! If I could get that point across to a few million people, I could die in peace! Example: I was at a recent screening of the movie "Once" with Glen Hasard & Marketa Irglova present. Have you seen it? Talk about original and not trying to sound like anyone else! I don't know if you like their music or not, but they're totally real. The audience, made up of some of Hollywood's top composers/lyricists/singer-songwriters, was ecstatic over their unique live performance.

  • Ok...

Do you really have to do all of these crazy excercizes to become a good singer???

And i noticed most vocal teachers only teach how to have a high voice. I have a high vocal but i want a strong voice like Amy Lee from Evanescence. But do you think a vocal coach can really help you get a good voice???

  • You never HAVE to do anything if you don't want to. But I can guarantee you that it takes quite a bit of "craziness" to sing well because of the amount of inner listening it takes to know that you know that you know your voice. A vocal coach can help, but only if they truly know what they're doing. There are those who claim to know but don't, so check them out first.

  • your good, great actually. videos and lessons are good too, weird, but very good

  • Thanks for your encouragement, even though my vids are kinda "weird!" I just think voice training should be as fun as possible. Since you're getting help here, be sure to make good use of the resources on the new site redesign section of my website too, and tell all your friends about singbabysing!

  • lol my mom thought there was something wrong with me when i was in my room doing this! :D these are great though, thanks.

  • Yeah, it can sound pretty crazy! People aren't used to the amount of effort it takes to practice and improve, nor do they understand how important it is for someone to get over their self-consciousness when doing them. Show her the videos and ask her to join you! :)

  • thank u so much 4 this stuff!!! U rock lady! kisses from croatia.

  • Thanks!

  • She is nuts...

  • Thank you very much. It takes a little bit of nutty to learn how to sing well! I hope you are finding your voice in a beautiful Bel Canto fashion.

  • Hi, Love your videos, can you help me cos I feel dizzy and often get a headache when i try to sing or project my voice. Thanks.

  • It sounds like tension that's causing this, although I am not a doctor and can't give any medical advice. Try doing this while lying flat on your back and doing it less loudly than the way I demonstrate it.

  • can u help me on how to sing because when i sing, it comes out to my nose (nasally).. tnx

  • Without hearing your voice, it's harder for me to help. But, a nasal tone generally comes from a tight throat. Several articles on my website can you help to better understand how your voice works, so check things out and get back to me.

  • your a great teacher XD love ya! im going to see the next video!

  • Thnx so much and keep in touch. Also, be sure to absorb all you can from the articles and resources on my website (redesign pages) and encourage others to do the same. I appreciate it!

  • ur awesome! do u have any vids on how to do vibrato?

  • See my comments to your other questions about vibrato....it's something people ask a lot about...remember....it's a natural process so don't force it. The resonance exercise and projection exercises will help...and the dog pant and slow leaky tire. I love your enthusiam!

  • ive almost watched all ur vids they are great thank u for posting ive been told that i kind of sing nazely but i was wandering what vid should i wath to stop doing that -thanks

  • Good question. Check these things: how are you using your soft palate. It needs to be low or it pinches off the sound trying to get into the nasal are (for desired resonance); is your tongue relaxed(especially at its root)? If not, it will also pinch off the sound trying to get into the bony part of your head; are you pushing out your breath? If so, that puts too much pressure on your vocal cords. Watch the "Tongue" exercise and read the articles on my website.

  • you are wonderful ^^

  • Thanks!!! I hope you'll tell your friends and family about what I'm doing and encourage anyone you know to help themselves!

  • It is really nice to see how people offers his time to help some other people, just a wonderful thing. Thanks!

  • Thanks for your encouragement. I'll keep helping others as long as I can......

  • Thanks! I'll continue to follow your lessons closely :-)

  • Great! I'll try to post something new soon.

  • I've noticed that operatic singing (or the one imitating it :-) Is a lot more easier than casual pop. I've noticed that songs which have many different renditions (different vocalists and arrangements, in this case) makes it a lot easier to sing in your own style. How can I develop my own singing personality?

  • The short answer is being totally true to yourself and not imitating anyone else. This takes deep inner listening that starts before any sound is made. Getting up in front of people and singing then evaluating how their responses make you feel can help. Also, working with a mirror in practice can offer clues. If you don't like what you see in the mirror when you sing there's a reason that's linked with something that's probably getting in your way. If you do, exaggerate what it is that you like.

  • Thanks for your great answer!

Is there a possibility that I nead to learn to harmonize a little bit more? (Sorry about my English). I find myself very often not being able to sing in another key than the actual singer (when singing along). In that case, when these limitations occur; I think that harominizing and finding different tunes in those parts might help. Could this be true? Of course, to train up something like that takes some time and a great deal of effort. Please correct me :-)

  • Thank you for your excellent comment. I assure you that you don't need to apologize for your English. It's actually better than many people here in the States, so congratulations! You worked hard to communicate so excellently. Learning to harmonize is always a good skill to learn and helps to train your "internal" ear.

  • This exercise will help, but also do resonance, dog pant and leaky tire. Reading the articles I've written and posted on my website will help too.

  • I seem to sing really quietly and do not project my voice enough especially when im singing the climax of the song. Will this exercise help me build my voice to sing louder?

  • its so creepy at the end...

  • uh.......sorry about that. Just having fun.

  • I'm bad at low notes... Is there any ways to improve my voice? Please...

  • Not sure what you mean by "bad" at low notes. Do you mean you just can't sing them or that they don't having staying power or???

  • It doesn't come out.. Like stuck at my throgt..
