Both directors, Ferrara and Cassavetes, have striven to make authentic, innovative cinema. Sometimes they've succeeded (The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, A Woman Under the Influence, Ms. 45, King of New York, Bad Lieutenant) and sometimes they've failed. See some of the successes before you judge. Just like a daring stand-up comic, some of the material bombs and some kills. But with either of these guys, it's a heart-fealt shot at revealing the human condition.

John Cassavetes is not properly appreciated for the groundwork he was doing in Improv film and theatre. I'm an actor and jazz musician and improv theatre is theatrical JAZZ! Ferrera should be running a low-class pool hall instead of directing, judging by the way he talks. My favourite moment of his was in a movie with Matt Modine and the actress was very hot and you were dying to see her nude and then he finally shows here nude over the end credits.

I saw several films of Cassavetes and I've always been puzzled by a sort of paradox: on the hand, his cinema seems to be characterized by an improvisional style while, on the other, he insisted that his actors deliver their lines exactly as they were written in the script. Why was that? A technique to achieve a more purer form of ''cinéma vérité''?

when cassavetes distributed his own films he would often get theaters in working class neighborhoods to play them, thinking people would prefer to see films that were more like their own life. as ferrara's story illustrates, the opposite is probably true and people with harder lives would rather see more escapist fantastical films.
