Thanks a lot for your help and explanation, i really appreciate all your efforts. I will be composing music only through FL Studio or may be some other software and for that matter, if i move scales up or down to find out relatives and if they encounter black keys, can i safely call them as flats always?
@mistalox not yet - the music theory videos were not doing well at first . So I wasn't sure if it would be worth producing more. Seems to be more interest now. I' want to create videos 4 to ? - covering "harmony and chords" eventually. I haven't had any free time to upload videos to YouTube for a while. I;m going to make time real soon .
@ste1438 I'm 17, and I only started using FL Studio a couple weeks ago, but right away I could tell that I needed to learn basic music theory. I thought it would help my attempts at producing.
I've watched the majority of your tutorials already, which are incredible by the way.
I really appreciate it, and I'm looking forward to any videos you make in the future.
@vikrantagnihotri IN FL Studio scales are already built and there are lots of scales already defined - so the theory of creating and building scale is not something I'll be covering - and doesn't really apply to FL Studio. This is music theory for electronic music - so this issue with enharmonic scales doesn't really apply. In FL studio - Refer to the notes as flat sharp - whatever. I only called them flats because I was referring to Bb - but this is a very trivial matter.
I have a question, at 3:46 time, you said that we have two flats in G natural minor and two flats in B flat major, why did you call them flats and not sharps?
@squizzy104 The difference between you and I is that I realize how difficult it is to play the Guitar and I would never claim to have mastered it - in fact very few people including yourself have the right to say that. It goes the same for Electronic Music - Your a Guitar Player who claims to have Mastered it - but yet you know very little about electronic music in general. Jean Micheal Jarre, Kitaro, Mike Oldfield...the have mastery. Your comparing you feeble skills to them. Obnoxious.
I just like to say I spent an entire night watching all your tutorial videos. Very useful and gave me a lot of hope lol. I have the demo and was looking to buying; I'm still uncertain as it's more of a curiosity for me than a job or a serious hobby. So I'm trying to justify the expense to myself, depending on the results I expect to get.
I loved your basics and some advanced stuff like automation and so on. Do you ever intend to make more? I was looking forward to a video on arrangement. TY!
@ste1438 I loved your vids till that lesson. I teach guitar, been playing 40 years.you will see me here playing a few songs on my channel squizzy104. You need scales for the Guitar especially the Pentatonic scales, or you have no chance but seriously for this stuff? some one has already said if it sounds right? A keyboard is laid out in front of you, hit the wrong one and you will know it! :P still watching ya vids though! xxx
I think the music theory vids are great, they help eliminate trial and error methods and i observed a couple of recent songs in mainstream that have used harmonic minor and im completely new to music development. I'm trying to learn piano but you could call fl studio my first instrument. Thank you. I view and review your tutorials but if you know of any where else on the web (or even books) that can help get me started i would appreciate it greatly if you shared them with me.
okay i have a ? so far so good but i dont understand one part of the video cause in music theroy you rasie the 6th and the 7th going up the melodic sacle and lower the 7th and sixth going down if you did do this let me but dont you have to up a full octive then down correct ?
@redw00d89 Your question is not worded to well, but it doesn't matter - It's good to understand the basic theory about ascending and descending in the minor scales. You don't have to follow those rules all the time though. Use your ears and go with what sounds the best to you. There is no absolute right or wrong here. The theory here makes more sense when you use chord progressions too. I have not covered that yet. There many minor scales that don't change up or down at all.
Thank you for the videos. Some of the stuff I knew, but some I didnt. SO I would advise anyone to watch these because even if you know some of the info its good to refresh yourself.
@TheIndieJesus I did cover it but just press alt+V. Also it's good to know that in FL Studio 10(soon to be released) and the latest Beta - you can double right click on a ghost note to switch to a different channel. That is a really good time saver.
OK... i got everything right, but i am having problem understanding one thing...btw keep in mind that English is a foreign language for me..so i make a melodic minor for example starting from A. I activate ghost channels so i can follow my scale in the piano roll. So far so good, but when i try to create something, how do i recognize which of the notes are suitable for each other ? If i want a deeper sound i use 2 or 3 notes on top of each other, but they sound crappy... how do i recognize em:?
@Desir3fless You are talking about chords. Using your ear is the best way to create chords. You know what sounds bad. I have not covered chord theory, and not too many are interested in music theory. I don't think I'll be covering any more music theory directly. Anything related to music theory just doesn't get views - sign of the times. I am frustrated about it because I think it is important. I plan on sneaking it in, and force feeding chord theory in an upcoming video though.
@ste1438 Creating music is something that i want from kid man...i spoke to people that are making pretty good stuff with FL...after making some projects i sent them....i thought it sounded pretty well and all the notes were in the scale but the guy told me that the notes are all wrong :D anyway. Music theory is important if you want to make good music :) So thanks for the lessons i have a lot more material to cover and it's pretty useful :) can you refer me some good videos for later progress ?

I've been watching all of your videos and bought your Downloadable collection. What ever you choose keep up the great work. Hope you can find a happy medium of infusing the videos with music theory here and there. :)
@aileronster Yes, I think it is a bad trend. People want to learn music, but they don't want to learn any theory. The best music schools in the country with very big tuitions focus heavily on theory. Artists with this type of education have a much higher level of success. I wanted to bring some of that here, but it's just not happening. Videos been up 5 months and just 3,500 views. I'm really disappointed. Glad to hear that you have some books and interest. in music theory too.

@ste1438 aww man that makes me sad, i guess i'll just have to take other peoples' advice and take a music theory class because i really have no knowledge about music whatsoever..
@snpr1 Nothing to be sad about - It's just the way it is. You don't need a class - there is plenty of music theory help on-line, it's better than a class in some ways - Music Theory courses are very broad, but if you research online you can focus on specific topics + it's free. Scales, Chords/harmony, Rhythm at minimum.
@ste1438 it would be awesome if you could keep going with music theory! i think its really interesting and was really let down when i couldnt find video #4.
@ste1438 I'd really like to see more about music theory. I only learned basics when a kid... It'd would be really awesome if you posted more videos about it, together with FL studio stuff. :[
Hey, Have you guys seen the new Windows 7 powered StudioBLADE computer workstations? They're perfect for running FL Studio and all your windows compatable plug-ins! Click the link below to see videos!
@pbplaya5 It could be either. It depends on where you start the scale. Just like all the white keys starting on c is a major scale and all the white keys starting on A is a minor scale. The pentatonic. scale has modal variations too.
@ste1438 Ok. so say I took the major scale and started it at say... a B flat, what would the scale be? Great videos by the way! Super informative and a great help!
@pbplaya5 Bb major - but why not A# Major? reason is Bb major has an "A" natural in it. So technically it can never be A# Major. This would give you an "A" natural and "A#" in your scale -and you can't put that in a key signature.
@ibaneziceman2002 I can't explain the details of it in text, but that was covered more in more detail in video 02: Intro to scales. I didn't really take time to explain it again here, since it was already covered in the last tutorial.
