I was at this match. The rally was intense. Both teams were banging the ball all night long. UBC won this rally but lost the match. The UofA Bears went on to win the national title that year as well.

I loved the comment "at 1:02 there was a lift..." no referee is going to stop that rally after 30 seconds for ball handling let alone after a minute. Gotta let the spectacular plays happen!

Also, the quick is a high risk play. You don't want to force the quick, because the longer the rally goes, the more important it gets ( mentally ), so the setters did the "safe" play in order to keep their team in it.

0:08 the setter wouldnt run an out of system 61 because of UofAs stack blocking system. would have been a two man block on him.

0:19 the setter is pushed to position 4 behind the attack line. there is no way that the setter is going to force from that position.

0:38 yes they can run a 31, but i think they wanted to spread the offence and you know that middle on the other side is bagged so why not keep him running to the outside?

1:02 setter wasnt squared so he couldnt.

its not as easy as just saying set the middle. regardless of the passes being bad, in straight game strategy you have to know something about the players and the individual match ups. during this time UofA had the best middle blockers in the CIS. UBC is not going to go after them in the middle. UBCs big banger is on the rightside hitting the Cball, and UofA is going after UBCs setter who is trying to block the leftside. Gotta have a reason for making a set!

I too am setter & I never complain about how much running I am doing, because in this position, your job is to get the ball & set up the best possible offense no matter how long the play lasts. Rallies like this test each team's true ability at all levels. But I think the most exhausting esp. in long rallies is definitely the middles. Every time they need to block, turn around & be ready for a set. A lot of quick foot work, you can't afford to become tired.
