He and Rita got in Dimebag's ear, and ultimately it was Vinnie Paul's decision to disband Pantera. You could tell in interviews that Vinnie and Phil weren't that close to begin with, while Phil and Dime were. Vinnie was always the more uptight one of the lot, didn't get any tattoos, usually took shit more seriously, and both he and Dime were given everything from day 1 while Phil had to work for it. I like them all, but Phil was always more open to a Pantera reunion than Vinnie was.

Well first of all, they didn't ditch Pantera to "start" Down. Down was formed in 1993, right in the middle of Pantera's run, and Rex didn't join the band until 1999. They didn't "ditch" the Abbotts, they just went off on their own side project. Heaps of people do it, and when you're Phil Anselmo it's impossible to just be in one band. Nothing was stopping Vinnie and Dime from starting a new band, which they eventually did but not until THEY disbanded Pantera after throwing a hissy fit.

I'm not on either, but I think the Abbotts threw a hissy fit by disbanding Pantera altogether just because Phil and Rex wanted a little change of pace and then by releasing an album which was pretty much an hour of Anselmo bashing.

Yeah I'm a guitarist too, and I was originally influence by Dime, but it's hard to find influence from someone who was pretty much given everything from his parents and never really had to go through the hardships of life to gain success. That's why I tend to lean more towards Phil, because I find it easier to relate to him. Prior to joining Pantera he used to live on the streets.
