HappyWandy457, I wonder what the composer is willing to let us feel on this piece...In my ears I cannot miss to think he intends to give us somewhat near to a Karl Orff composition, It could be a Burana post mortem, don´t you think? What a waste on such hard work done by soloist, orchestra and master of the batoon!
Berio can feel a bit theatrical and exaggerated, but he's written some great music. I don't know this one (which sounds like it draws heavily from the Sacre), but if you want to hear something more accessible, give "Rendering" a try. It's sketches from Schubert for his10th symphony, mixed with comments by Berio.
And this was played well, very well. It's hard to make such pieces sound clear, but the Berliner Phil succeeds in this fragment.
Very interesting...the fact that it has a discernible melody (at times) makes this piece easier for me to listen to than some of the other music that falls into this genre. I like it enough that I'm kinda bummed that I can't find it elsewhere on YouTube...but not enough to buy a ticket to watch the whole piece in the digital concert hall! :P
This is fantastic music. I love the semi-tonal character of the piece and that it has actual listenable melodies. When I see sir Simon conducting this it really makes me wonder no longer why it is his version of Stockhausen's Gruppen that is so famous today.
Wow! I have never expected this kind of music especially from Berliner Philharmoniker. Honestly, I don't like it. But I think it really depends on the listener. Some might think it's fantastic and challenging but for some it's more like a noise.
@ChanonPongpanich It does depend on the listener, but its not a matter of opinion really. I've noticed that truly open-minded people can find the beauty in all music. This is some of the most colorful music ever composed. Those "folk-like" vocal lines, and the vibrant and interesting percussion writing...all of it is so amazing, and if people are willing to open their ears and minds to it, then you will hear far more than just noise. Its gorgeous.
@masterclassicalmusic 1. Celesta. 2. Probably the composer told them to do so, for the sake of trying for a unique musical effect. 3. Why shouldn't they be mixed? Don't really understand your question. Isn't the very concept of an orchestra different instruments mixing together?
Can anyone tell me who are the saxophonist that play with the orchestra? Thank you =)

wonderful. I wish I could play music in that style.

it's not challenging it is pure organic and not less... Berio is one of the most important composer of the past century

It must have been rather difficult to balance the voices and instruments. A most unusual stage arrangement.

Is the seating called for in the score? How interesting, I'm going to get this in the DCH. Thanks for the glimpse into this.

歌手が、オーケストラの中に点在している、不思議な光景です。まー人間【声】も立派な楽器だからなぁ~。

This just did not sound good. It was more like a hodgepodge of sound mashed together.

Nice to hear a challenging work. It's not something I'd keep on my Ipod, but good to listen to music that challenges our listening.

there are some question:
1. what is the kind of the instrument like piano on the left at 0:15
2. why do the singers sit with the wind and strings players
3. why are the instrument mixed? don't like the orchestra's structure
masterclassicalmusic 10 months ago
@masterclassicalmusic The instrumtne is a celesta, I would say.
ThierryChervel 10 months ago
@masterclassicalmusic 1. I think it's a harmonium. 2. & 3. It's probably demanded by the composer.

@masterclassicalmusic 1. The instrument is a Celesta.
2. Every singer is doubled with an instrument
3. There is an exact plan of which singer/which instrument is sitting where on stage made by Luciano Berio himself.
