American voice actors for overdubs seem to have a hard time portraying specific characters' personalities through the tone of their voice without sounding too monotone or over-the-top. Voice actors are a big deal in Japan, not to mention their scripts are the originals and are easily synced with the animation, so it'd make sense why they'd usually be better.
There's an English dub of this? Hm, I didn't know that... But I ink (hehe) I'll stick to the Japanese one for now while I watch the rest of the second season. Still, not half bad though. I've seen far worse, like the morning animes currently on CTNW. God, those are awful.
Sounds good to me, no where near the 80s or early 90s voices. No wonder the companies bash these idiots for complaining. Majority don't even buy the products...

Unlike 4kids attempt to replace Nya with cat puns in "Mew Mew Power", replacing "Geso" with squid or sea puns is well done here. Think Spongebob; under the sea they'd probably have different insults or curse words.
The cast is well chosen, I can accent these voices unlike lots of dubs where they cast so poorly.
However I hope they dont go replacing the actual curse words to make this child friendly, when they dub anime they should keep it at the same target audience.

@TheRamosOnline They don't swear in the Japanese version to begin with, so how is it watered down? Ika Musume is pretty much the definition of an innocent for-all-ages SoL Comedy. Ika does drop "super-pissed" once or twice, but I don't believe she'd ever have a reason to say "bitch".
If you read between the lines of what she's saying, Ika actually swears quite a lot in the English dub, she just replaces the actual words with fish puns that sound innocent.

Actually, search for Sonic X comparison vids. It'll explain things better than I can. When you find out that Live and Learn was in the jap dub and the several things they cut out in the english, you will hate 4kids.

Sonic' VA annoys me, Rouge didn't sound like her age at all and Knuckles sounds dumb. She could have just said something like "I am the squid girl, Ika Musume!" or "I am Squid Girl! Call me Ika." Plenty of dubbers have done stuff like that before, successfully avoiding ridiculous direct translations.

If you mean warm up, they should do the warm ups before the final recording. As for Vic Migogna; it was the huge success of Fullmetal Alchemist that made people notice him - but once you've seen him in one role, you've seen him in all of them.

Vic only became huge because of shows like FMA, FMP and Ouran. I'll be perfectly honest, outside of "Over the top" characters like Ed and Tamaki, I find his voice pretty annoying xD

@TheKiddtic Fun fact: this was a Bang Zoom dub, albeit with mostly fresh, new voice actors and not the union cast (Wendee Lee, Crispin Freeman, etc.). For new VAs as cast, their efforts are passable in some places, pretty brilliant in some other places. Of course, that's just me.

funimation does better dubbing. You can tell pretty easily that these people are reading from a script, there is rarely any real life to these guys. Spice and Wolf is one of the better dubs i've ever seen.
@FreddyMercurysAIDS There are moments when she sounds like an old lady, specifically around 0:12, but I've managed to tolerate most of it anyway, far from the worst dub I've heard... seriously.

Ika's voice is nice, but it doesn't sound cute or naive enough.
Everyone else is either boring or doesn't fit compared to the original, Eiko sound like she's yawning every time and Chizuru lacks that trollish tone when she speaks. The low volume of the soundtrack and/or removal of the soundtrack doesn't help this dub though.
Liking how they replaced the verbal tics with puns though.
Bang Zoom! made a interesting choice with Chizuru's voice actor. I would love to see how her vocals contrast when she takes on Chizuru's during her darker scenes. I think for me that moment is going to be the difference between whether I find that her performance is either very good, or just average, over all.
this dubber needs to learn how to change her voice a bit, I'm tired of hearing her in a lot of dubs, I think she is kind of bad too. I like the voices of all the other characters better.

@RyuShoji Todd Haberkorn happens to be my favorite voice actor. And I don't think there's anything wrong with the amount of roles he gets, considering he deserves them. He's just a good voice actor. And now I want to hear him say "de geso." Pfffft.

Sure, I liked Todd playing Ling Yao in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, but when I hear the exact same voice in other shows (Which is an increasing number these last couple of years), it just makes FUNimation dubs feel somewhat bland.
@RyuShoji But his normal voice is different, and I've heard him use a couple different voices. His normal voice doesn't tend to go as high as it does when he's acting. I heard him speak in real life, and I definitely noticed a difference.

Everything I've heard him in, and interviews I've listened to, have all been in relatively the same voice.

Many voice actor applicants are in Japan. A competition rate is high. There are a lot of voice actor training schools in japan.
Therefore the Japanese voice actors have high ability in spite of the new face.

@TheAnimedudeXD Meh, it's not too hard to make it work. Plus, it's an anime. It doesn't have to be too realistic. She could have just said something like "I am the squid girl, Ika Musume!" or "I am Squid Girl! Call me Ika." Plenty of dubbers have done stuff like that before, successfully avoiding ridiculous direct translations.

If you mean warm up, they should do the warm ups before the final recording. As for Vic Migogna; it was the huge success of Fullmetal Alchemist that made people notice him - but once you've seen him in one role, you've seen him in all of them.

Vic only became huge because of shows like FMA, FMP and Ouran. I'll be perfectly honest, outside of "Over the top" characters like Ed and Tamaki, I find his voice pretty annoying xD

@mogechichioppai His voice fits certain roles well (I wouldn't have anyone else voicing Ed Elric for example). However, to say he's a good actor when he has a limited vocal range and ends up getting cast as very similar characters...not a good 'actor'.

It just allows the people who prefers it to watch it in English. Personally I prefer to watch it in Japanese, but if a English dubbing comes out I will watch that as well, and if it's a bad dub I will stop watching it. Besides, it's not like this is a 4Kids dub where 99% of the content is removed or edited out so little kids can watch it

@TheKiddtic Fun fact: this was a Bang Zoom dub, albeit with mostly fresh, new voice actors and not the union cast (Wendee Lee, Crispin Freeman, etc.). For new VAs as cast, their efforts are passable in some places, pretty brilliant in some other places. Of course, that's just me.

funimation does better dubbing. You can tell pretty easily that these people are reading from a script, there is rarely any real life to these guys. Spice and Wolf is one of the better dubs i've ever seen.

Ika's voice is nice, but it doesn't sound cute or naive enough.
Everyone else is either boring or doesn't fit compared to the original, Eiko sound like she's yawning every time and Chizuru lacks that trollish tone when she speaks. The low volume of the soundtrack and/or removal of the soundtrack doesn't help this dub though.
Liking how they replaced the verbal tics with puns though.

Bang Zoom! made a interesting choice with Chizuru's voice actor. I would love to see how her vocals contrast when she takes on Chizuru's during her darker scenes. I think for me that moment is going to be the difference between whether I find that her performance is either very good, or just average, over all.

Sure, I liked Todd playing Ling Yao in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, but when I hear the exact same voice in other shows (Which is an increasing number these last couple of years), it just makes FUNimation dubs feel somewhat bland.

@RyuShoji But his normal voice is different, and I've heard him use a couple different voices. His normal voice doesn't tend to go as high as it does when he's acting. I heard him speak in real life, and I definitely noticed a difference.

@SageTheWriter "A couple of different voices" Oh yeah, that makes an actor good 9.9. Problem with a lot of "actors" these days, both in Hollywood live-action and anime dubs, is there's very little variation in their performances in one piece to another.
Everything I've heard him in, and interviews I've listened to, have all been in relatively the same voice.
