Its a good thing that the Philippine Government maintains their airports' runways. Its nice to know that our NAIA had provided a place of safety for the beleaguered aircraft and its passengers.
Well that B747 will never fly again to much damage done to the body that its almost non repairable and if it was the FAA wouldn't allow it because it'll never be safe to fly.
Now after 2 years Qantas A380 had to make emergency landing in Singapore due to explosion of one its engine.. If this airline belongs to a third world counrtries.. US and EU countries will banned this Airline Immediately..
it wasnt because of the airline safety records it was because of Rolls Royce Engines.... it qantas will never be banned from EU or US because Australia is part of the Commonwealth Countries which would be a sign of disrespect if the EU or US is qantas is ever banned....
@Sterlingjob About the maintenance of the machine, obviously not so much about the operation of it, otherwise you would know that it is often incorrect repairs on the aircraft, done by engineers (I'm not saying for a moment that engineers aren't important, nor am I trying to criticise your job, simply stating the facts i know) and that pilots are rarely to blame for incidents like these
the 747 is literally built like a tank! The 747 has been put to the test on numerous occassions such as these and the aircraft has landed safely most of the time. Boeing sure did build one hell of an airplane! amazing!
If god would have intended for us to fly,we would have all been born with rockets up our arses, therefore i'm staying at home with a nice cup of tea & a slice of auntie Vi's home made Madeira cake, now what's on the telly?
Australia always fixers everything and always get it right the first time, look at other countries, the U.S, UK, Singapore, China, they have planes that have come out of the Sky, the country to come out of the Sky the most is the United States, there's always reports of the U.S coming out of the Sky.
Qantas has never come out of the Sky, but when Qantas moved some services overseas, this happened, before that, Qantas never even had something wrong with it's Air Con, other Aussie airlines, Jet Star, Tiger, Virgin Blue, and even they haven't come out of the Sky in there life time, Services for them Airlines are based in Melbourne Australia, that's where they fix all the planes, Qantas planes and fix there as well, after they moved there service bacl to Australia!
I work for the Federal Government on which i have checked and it states under Commonwealth Records that Australia did fly first! plus it states it on the United States Information Records.
This is true, metro manila is so big like the whole country slovenia (europe) !!! If you not believe look at wikipedia! Its true! Proud to be half pinoy! :)
I disagree. You say that people in the United States can't fix planes? Remember, we are the aviation capital of the world. Who do you think built that B747-400?
That's the thing you don't get, the U.S isn't the capital, and every Airline in the U.S have come out of the sky, no Australia airline has ever come out of the sky, Qantas, Virgin Blue, Jet Star, or Tiger Airways, and Qantas which is a 100% Australia airline was the first airline to ever fly a plane, they were the first in the sky, oh and that wasn't built in the U.S, there are many companies that build planes, UK, Australia and so on!
Your argument doesn't make sense. I was referring to how you said that the US can't fix there aircraft. Did you know that %59 of Qantas Airlines fleet is American made (Boeing)? Also, who cares if you were the first airline to fly, we were the first to ever Fly!
The Qantas myth persists. They have never had a fatal JET accident or FATAL crash of any kind since 1951. That's a great record but it's far from never having crashed. It was the 2nd airline to ever fly a plane, again impressive but not the 1st. I haven't even looked at your profile but I would be betting large amounts of moolah that you are Australian. US fleets are vast so it stands to reason that there would be more accidents. I am not American btw, just rational.
Go watch ACI flight 811. UA 747 had a cargo door blow off, and the about 5 rows long and the entire height of the fuselage on the right side was torn off, both right side engines died, and the pilots landed the thing in HNL.
Congrats on CNN for not knowing how to spell the name of the world's safest airline. Yes, as much as they've had some controversy of late, they still haven't ever crashed a jet, and for their passenger numbers, that makes them unique. Having said that, I don't fly QANTAS. Their competitors now offer comperable service for cheaper price.
All criticism aside, the pilots and crew deserve a big round of applause and gratitude for managing to save all the lives of the people on board that aircraft.
Woah..being an emetophobe,if I was on that flight, I would have had an attack :S Glad that nobody got injured and well done to the crew/attendants etc.
This guys acount seems to be a fair bit different to everyone else's He sais how everyone was screaming and the crew ran to their seats, but everyone else said it was calm and the crew helped out.
I'm a Filipino and I never flew with Qantas but I still think it's a cool airline but if I will know the cause of the explosion has something to do with the a/c's rivets or something then I'm going to Australia for example. I'm going to chose other airlines like our airline PAL.
First phase, would you fly Qantas again, if you had an unused return ticket?
Qantas mustn't outsource maintenance if it wants to regain the reputation it once had.
Cut costs?... There are other ways. We'd prefer safety assurance over fancy dining and cutlery. Just provide simpler food, like sandwiches, rolls, pastries, coffee, water, tea and fruit juices.
To be precise, not everyone is really hungry on flights. we're more concerned in reaching our destination.
So, tell me, if you've got a loved one returning from Melbourne to Singapore for his school hols, and the return ticket was already purchased abt S$1381, would you still use it?
Please advise me. On one hand, you'd think of saving the money, on the other hand, you'd be afraid of making a wrong choice, you know what I mean?
The law of averages state that equipment will fail from time to time but Qantas is still one of the safest airlines in the world due to their underlying safety culture. An exploding oxygen bottle which the aircraft if designed to withstand anyway is not as major as the media circus would have you believe. It would not have been a pleasant experience however. I would still use the ticket.
ex Qantas LAME SAYS CANT EXPLAIN , NOTHING TO DO WITH BAD MAINTENACE , this was extreem one off . all airp-lanes are vunerable , dont condemm qantas for a first ever problem . NO BODY DIED .
I TOTALLY agree with usouso.....That jackass needs to be fired fired fired!!!! money to line his nasty pockets!!!! he should be on a plane where this happens. Maybe he would wise up! And to the people on board this flight.>>OMG, you people are soo calm after the fact. Glad each and everyone of you is safe!!!!!
i hope that all airline companies stop outsourcing maintenance to other countries to cut costs. There is this careless attitude. Qantas never had such incidents before...until they outsourced their maintenance. Qantas must investigate and check every plane, right up to the nuts and bolts to ensure none are missing in its place.Where is the safety standard??
Qantas is the safet airline in the world, that's true. But this problem wasn't a big deal. It's just a small incident which is very easy to recovery. It was just an air carbon pressure decompression. No loss of hydralic or what so ever.
Qantas has an ageing fleet, this 747 is over 16 years old. It should have recieved the A380 over two years ago. They are being forced to use these older B747-400s and 747-400ERs. Outsourcing maintainence to cheap labour markets does help either.
Kangamanda, I take it you're Aussie. My girlfriend is Aussie and she has told me on several occasions how proud OZ is of Qantas. They have one of the best if not the best safety record of world airliners. Compared to what could have happened like 3 of the four engines dropping off, this hole was minor, and the pilots were fully trained for this emergency and calmly handled it. Lucky thing this didn't happen over the middle of the Indian Ocean.
I was on this flight. I cannot commend the crew for the professional demeanor in which they conducted themselves and looked after us.
This was simply a freak accident. It could have happened to any aircraft. It just happened to happen to this one and we need to remember NO ONE was killed, and to my knowledge no one was hurt.
This airplane has only been serviced in Avalon, so what is your point? There has been no dispensations given to maintenance of Qantas' 747's and C checks are conducted as per Boeings recommendations so what are you inferring?
I think Quantas should be tempoarily black listed and all their fleet grounded as another Quantas Jet got in to difficulty as an aircraft door opened mid flight.
I think the old Quantas where safety was always paramount is well and truely over!
Sorry fella but you don't know shit about Qantas. This is a first for a boeing 747 that an oxygen bottle exploded so I'd take it easy on Qantas. BTW, this aircraft like all Qantas 747's is a very low cycle aircraft; not something you'd expect on a 747.
I Agree, all aircraft are going to come into problems a couple of times in the Airframe usage, but it doesnt mean that the aircraft is bad. If it was really that bad then why would the aircraft be still doing passenger flights? Its a very rare incident this and i've looked at the first page of new comments and maybe 2 times that Qantas is a bad airline. I've never flown with them so i dont know what there services are like but an unusual incident like this should not make an airline become hated
If this was a one-off incident, I'd agree. But Qantas has been dicing with death too many times in recent years. They put profits ahead of all else, which is why things have started going wrong. Even though they've never had a fatal accident, they're far from the world's safest airline at the present day. Qantas today is a very different airline from what it was 10 or 20 or 50 years ago. It's their crash-free history that makes them appear much safer than they actually are.
I agree 100%. Qantas still has the best safety record and I can tell you from personal experience at the Sydney maintenance facility as well as Avalon heavy maintenance that Qantas are in fact brilliant at maintaining Boeings. Even Boeing are surprised by this incident as they have never had a supplemental oxygen bottle explode before. Alot of TSB's will be written over this all over the world. Qantas 747's are the lowest cycle 747's in the world due to Australia's remoteness.
you don't know what your talking about, these aircraft are not maintained to the same standards they once where, that is why these emergency's are always happening
The plane was deliberately dropped to 10000 feet to get to breathable air and I just found out about a half hour ago that possibly it was an oxygen tank that ruptured that blew the hole in the fusalage... That would explain why his mask didnt work.
Since Qantas started cutting costs to maintain profits several years ago, more and more incidents have been happening. They have the very precious position amongst airlines as having never had a fatal accident. It's only a matter of time before they have a major air disaster at this rate. If this happens, Qantas will lose its single most invaluable brand equity, forever. But short-sighted executives don't care about this. They want profits, now.
What a sad eventuality for such a special airline.
yeah...clap should be given to the engineers and pilots for the well done job and also for the passengers for being calm... ....go qantas...go...go...u can do more...maybe try to crash with the other airlines...or maybe u can open the door while flying...all of u will have a very good experience and happiness....keep it up...
one of my friends was on that flight and said that it was most scary when the masks dropped

Qantas is the safet airline in the world, that's true. But this problem wasn't a big deal. It's just a small incident which is very easy to recovery. It was just an air carbon pressure decompression. No loss of hydralic or what so ever.

Its not now. First, its this 747. Next its the 737. And today, its the 767. All in ONE week. WOW.

KLM is the safest airline in the world hands down.

Qantas is the most safest airline of the world second is Finnair and third Cathay Pacific.

Thank you Qantas for taking such good care of us.

oops I cannot commend the crew ENOUGH!!!

Learn how to spell QANTAS before for post something bad about them!!!!
davegammal 3 years ago
Sorry fella but you don't know shit about Qantas. This is a first for a boeing 747 that an oxygen bottle exploded so I'd take it easy on Qantas. BTW, this aircraft like all Qantas 747's is a very low cycle aircraft; not something you'd expect on a 747.

'some Pilot had made a complaint about this aircraft Boeing 747'
Im a Qantas flight attendant based in London, i flew this aircraft to Hong Kong that day. And all our 747s are kept to an extremely high standard.
VH-OJK is one of the best to work on, it rarely has any tech issues.
Every airline has issues with certain aircrafts in their fleet, but this aircraft is not one of them!
andy2496 3 years ago
I Agree, all aircraft are going to come into problems a couple of times in the Airframe usage, but it doesnt mean that the aircraft is bad. If it was really that bad then why would the aircraft be still doing passenger flights? Its a very rare incident this and i've looked at the first page of new comments and maybe 2 times that Qantas is a bad airline. I've never flown with them so i dont know what there services are like but an unusual incident like this should not make an airline become hated
Dudeboy4000 3 years ago
If this was a one-off incident, I'd agree. But Qantas has been dicing with death too many times in recent years. They put profits ahead of all else, which is why things have started going wrong. Even though they've never had a fatal accident, they're far from the world's safest airline at the present day. Qantas today is a very different airline from what it was 10 or 20 or 50 years ago. It's their crash-free history that makes them appear much safer than they actually are.
zenrising 3 years ago
I agree 100%. Qantas still has the best safety record and I can tell you from personal experience at the Sydney maintenance facility as well as Avalon heavy maintenance that Qantas are in fact brilliant at maintaining Boeings. Even Boeing are surprised by this incident as they have never had a supplemental oxygen bottle explode before. Alot of TSB's will be written over this all over the world. Qantas 747's are the lowest cycle 747's in the world due to Australia's remoteness.
blampa 3 years ago
you don't know what your talking about, these aircraft are not maintained to the same standards they once where, that is why these emergency's are always happening
marjan8888 3 years ago
The plane was deliberately dropped to 10000 feet to get to breathable air and I just found out about a half hour ago that possibly it was an oxygen tank that ruptured that blew the hole in the fusalage... That would explain why his mask didnt work.
cyclepsychodad 3 years ago
QANTAS F**KED it up...oh my...bad publicity.
nexypointy 3 years ago
Since Qantas started cutting costs to maintain profits several years ago, more and more incidents have been happening. They have the very precious position amongst airlines as having never had a fatal accident. It's only a matter of time before they have a major air disaster at this rate. If this happens, Qantas will lose its single most invaluable brand equity, forever. But short-sighted executives don't care about this. They want profits, now.
What a sad eventuality for such a special airline.

Agreed Qantas used to be awesome.

yeah...clap should be given to the engineers and pilots for the well done job and also for the passengers for being calm... ....go qantas...go...go...u can do more...maybe try to crash with the other airlines...or maybe u can open the door while flying...all of u will have a very good experience and happiness....keep it up...

lol CNN spelt it "Quantas"
TheNuggetHead 3 years ago
plunged for about 20000ft? wow... well, great job for those in the cockpit to get the aircraft recovered at 10k...
epinjose 3 years ago
The plane did not "plunge". It was a controlled descent, which is normal procedure after loss of cabin pressure. There was nothing to "recover"
ryanhaart 3 years ago
I would NEVER fly on a QANTAS plane. Dodgy (overseas) maintenance nowadays. Its just a matter of time before they crash.
