I loved hearing this song since I was a kid. My mom had his record and when I was 9 years old I used to play the record over and over and sing along with it. Then I saw him perform at the spokane fair. I shouted out for him to perform this song and he did.
@majajh well dont feel to bad im sure she had little names that we cant mention on here for you to. because my sisters sure as hell did. lol godbless.
love this song i remember me n my daddy listen too all these songs this and ring of fire by johnny cash was my fav love these kind of songs aint no music like this today
@matwocents thanks for the comment. whats really funny that just happend yesterday is it was my sons birthday and my mother in law baked a birthday cake for him. so we are sitting in the living room and she strolls in the door with this huge cake. little does she know that her saggy boobs has fallen into the cake and she has icing all over her t-shirt where the nipples are. roflmao now. whats really funny is ten people was laughing but im the one she cuss.s out for it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! godbless
Okay, finally listened to the Bobby Bare version, liked it a lot. But comparing it to Dr. Hooks is like comparing apples and oranges to me. Bobby's is a good upbeat, part time coutryfide song. Dr. Hooks version is driven by a nice evil dark riff. Both are quite excellent in there own right.
For all of you that are just listening to this song and thinking that bobby bare did a great job with this song; you are exactly right!! MARIE LAVEAU really existed. She was born on September 8, 1801, and died on june 16,1881 at the ripe old age of 81
Definitely "black cat tooth" to go along with the "mojo bone", both of them objects of magic power. Besides, according to the end of the song Marie has a "pretty white ... tooth" (probably the only one in her jaw).
@MXshaunacy Shel Silverstein wrote it. Bobby Bare and Dr. Hook recorded a lot of Uncle Shelbys songs for him. Songs like Sylvias Mother, Cover of the Rolling Stone, The Giving Tree, and countless others.
I love this song! I also love Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo in the N'awlins French Quarter!!! It creeps some people out but I thought it was really cool!
We made a trip to New Orleans, pre-Katrina, and made it a point to visit the cemetery where Marie LaVeau is buried... Jackson Cemetery, I believe it's called. I have to wonder what became of the site in the wake of the Katrina damage.
But my aunt traced her family history and such and Marie Laveau was related to her somehow. I'm pretty sure it was an aunt. I'm sure it was one of her aunt's aunt's aunt or something. xD

This song is bullshit. the real marie la veau song is by papa celestin's new orleans band. soo much better than this absolute travesty of a song.

@oofak07 How dare there be 2 of something in the world!

@oofak07 Unfortunate that Papa Celestin is a ripoff of Cab Calloway. At least Bobby Bare has his own style.

@soontobmamaw I'm sorry but I think your math is wrong. If she was born in 1801 and lived for 81 years then she must have died in 1882.
