His movie "The Devils" is my all time favorite. I first saw it in a theater by accident and had no idea of what to expect. I'll never forget that experience!
So now we just have Gilliam! I hope he takes over Ken's Alice in Wonderland as it needs a surreal vision.
BTW I don't think White Worm is a BAD film: Some scenes are a bit 60-ish pedestrian, but others are brilliantly staged/shot. Also v interesting to see young actors working in modes quite unlike their later screen personas - not Hugh Grant of course, who seems to have a limited set of acting muscles, though he uses them quite well!
Ken Russell has a subversive sense of humor that I love. Recall, if you will, the scene in "Whore" where Liz gets taken to a fancy restaurant by her pimp. She spears some sort of odd appetizer with a fork and shouts for all to hear, "It looks like a dick!"
Just saw Russell in Toronto last night introducing the uncut version of the Devil's on 35. Something else to see in a theater! An experience I will not soon forget, especially hearing him speak.
Ken Russell has never gotten the credit he deserves. I know way too many people who have never heard of him and that's a shame. "Women In Love" and "Tommy" are such classics, as are several others! I still haven't seen "The Devils" because it's so hard to find but I hope to eventually.
Noticed there is a curious chronological similarity between the movies of Stanley Kubrick and Russell! An unconscious alter ego situation deeper then the obvious Fellini visual influences. Too many coincidences to be random not enough to be deliberate. Kubrick takes a "Cool and Detached" approach - Russell a "Hot and Involved" one. eg:. Spartacus - The Devils / Lolita - The Boyfriend / 2001 - Tommy / Clockwork Orange - Listomania etc See Amazon Listmania "Violence - Sex - Space Cadets" .
Great documentary about the genius Russell! Did you see The Devils at the BFI a couple of years ago? Mark Kermode interviewed him. A brilliant evening.
@SupraKarma The Ken Russell film on the clip is called Lisztomania a biography of sorts of composer Franz Liszt. Very strange even for Ken Russell, but worth finding and watching at least once.
I love Ken Russell. One of the few last, great iconoclast filmmakers. We've lost Fellini and Kubrick... now we've only got Russell and Gilliam, but no one will give them any money. Someone, PLEASE: GIVE THEM MONEY! As for Woody Allen, he's been way too spotty and inconsistent as of late.
Anyway, I thank you for this mini-doc: Russell's the best!
@ItalianDivo101 Lets not forget Peter Greenaway. Check out his films in imdb. The Thief, the Cook and the Wife and his lover was the first film I saw from him and I loved. Also check out Richard Lester. Yeah, ok he directed Superman 3 but check out early 60's work especially 'How I won the War' starring John Lennon.
please, in alllll honesty, please, ANYONE who knows how to contact him...georgina hale, murray melvin, anybody..., somebody... somebody please tell ken two things: i am an identical twin, and i must speak to him. I MUST.
I always thought there should be a feature documentary on Russel's work - something with a title like, say, "Method to the Madness." Thius will have to do for now and boy, do I wish I havd made this.

Just bought a bootleg copy of the unedited "The Devils" and was wowed once again. Does anybody know where to find a copy of "Song of Summer" or "Elgar?"
WILL MISS YOU FOREVER.

Love him, even his bad films, as someone else said.
Having a distinctive style is something that is dying out in modern filmmaking....
It takes all of five seconds of watching any one of his movies to be able to say "That's a Ken Russell movie."
