@ilovehorses100100 Having grown up on the '68 Oliver!, I would say that comparing these two is difficult, if not impossible. What I will say is that the characters seemed less lively and interesting than the musical. Granted it is insane to attempt to fill the shoes of Oliver Reed, but Sykes just wasn't a very imposing character in this version. Overall, the '68 "Oliver!" was leaps ahead of this movie in terms of charisma, but this movie takes a more gritty approach.

I just viewed Roman Polanski's version of "Oliver Twist" for first time and must say it really is well done. It depicts how difficult life really was during Dickens' time in the 19th century. I am suprised the director did not receive awards for this. I wish Poalnski would consider directing Dicken's classic "A Christmas Carol", someday.
