Beliefs generated and sustained by the devil whispering in your ear...fear of persecution for who you are as a person...a man who brings a city to ruins by doing what he believes is the right thing...the union of minorities against the authoritarian rule of the city's judge...a soldier, once a servent of a misguided ruler of the law finding redemption in seeing what is right and rebelling against his barbaric regime of ethnic clensing...and yet this is still one of the greatest childrens films.
thbe funny thing is frollos right, they WOULDNT have accepted him out there in the time period this is set. They become much more open in the sequel where paris lost 90% of the population though
As a musician, one of my favorite feelings in the world is when the music you're playing with other instruments around you starts to swell and reach a climactic height, so I can't even imagine how Tom Hulce (voice of Quasimodo) must have felt singing "All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day..." from 2:07 to 2:20 . I can barely contain myself just listening to it. Just think of the rush he must have got singing it!
I'm reading the novel (the abridged version) that this film was based off of in my French lit class right now. Literary enthusiasts may demoan this adaptation, but I think that they're missing the big picture- these two versions are totally separate entities, and whatever of the original pops up in the Disney film is great, but however they choose to alter the story is okay too. The result is, I think, an equally competent and passionate ride about a tumultuous point in history.
@GiantPetRat I couldn't agree more. I've read several critical slams against this movie because it doesn't follow the book. However, the movie is not the book, and it never tries to be. The book more serves as the inspiration for this movie. I mean, almost everything in the movie is some interpretation of an event in the book. Personally, I love both stories. I love their different themes, moods, characters. I respect their differences, and I believe both are great works.
@britainfan4lyf Hell, if Lion King and Beauy and the Beast are able to make themselves into musicals, I don't see why either this or Nightmare Before Christmas can't be.
I'm sorry if you don't agree, but this (in my opinion) is one of the most beautiful songs Disney has produced. I wish people would just listen to the passion and emotion in Quasimodo at how much he wants to be among people, EVEN THOUGH HE KNOWS THEY WILL HATE HIM!! When will this song and film get the recognition they deserve!?!?!
I get chills when Frollo sings about ugliness being "a crime for which the world shows little pity". That lyric is so true and it may be even worse in our times. Look at what "normal" people do to themselves today to try and match the images shown in the media--starve themselves, work out past their limits, inject themselves with chemicals, all to fit society's tastes. Poor Quasi wouldn't stand a chance in our world. He'd either be shunned or sent to doctors who'd try to "fix" him.
I really felt like b****slapping Frollo throughout the whole movie. He's basically one of the cruelest villains in disney!!!:( I'm so glad justice was served in the end:) this is such a lovely song, but I hated the beginning because of him-:[
@aMgVbros4aetas: signed. I especially love 'Mary Poppins'; it's an all-time treasure and one of my fondest childhood memories. Just as unforgettable as'The Jungle Book', ,Aristocats' and 'Chitty chitty bang Bang'. And who could ever forget that 'it's a small world after all'?
I love "If I was in their skin, I'd treasure every instant out there". Makes you appreciate what you have and be "content with your share". Disney, you shaped my morals.... <3
Such a powerful piece with incredible soaring melodies and beautiful voices! I love this entire score. I would love to see this turned into a musical. It would be absolutely brilliant!!!!
@Umikawauso2 Now I am not an expert on musical theater and all but I haven't seen it as a Broadway Musical in New York City yet. That is what I was meaning to say. I heard there was something like that in Europe at one moment in time but I can travel over there to see it.
This song just hits home so hard...It's so beautiful, but so tragic. I hate that I can relate to this song so much. But still, such a great triumph for Alan. This song is just gorgeous, same goes to Stephen Schwartz for the lyrics. Everything just works so well in this song :] A true masterpiece, just like the movie.
The only thing I hate about these "bring back old disney" comments is that they are too fricken long, we get the point after you name every fricken possible family substituion -.-
Does anyone else get overwhelming chills during this song? Some of the music in this film I think is of Alan Menken's greatest and is sadly so very very underrated.
@lavalamp625: Alan Menken is a genius; no kidding there. And yes, this soundtrack is sadly enough quite underrated, I guess because it's probably one of, if not *the* darkest, most controversial movie that ever left the Disney studios. There's murder, opression, blackmail, unrequitted love, insanity, outlawing, attempts at sexual assault and what not more. I also love "God help the Outcasts" very much, aswell as "Bells of Notre Dame". Up to this day, Menken is probably Disneys greatest composer
I never really liked this movie before, but when I watched it again a few weeks ago and saw what a great movie it was. Especially the soundtrack is one of the best made by Disney and is almost at the level of The Lion King (which is my favorite movie). Also Frollo is probably the most despicable villain of all Disney movies.
This song, right here, is why Frollo is the worst Disney villian. Urula, Maleficent, Cruella, they've got nothing on him. Because Frollo has raised Quasimodo to believe that he's ugly, that he's a lesser person, that the world hates him. That's the worst type of human being there is. "Out There," and "Hellfire" both give me chills, because they give us insight to REAL ugliness.
Growing up my two brothers were Aladdin and Tarzan, Growing up Jack Skellington was my father, Growing up Timon&Pumbaa were my best friends, and Growing up Belle was my mother.
This may not be a repost AdemiaDavenport, but I concur that it is wonderful to be a 90's kid, and it was a truly magical decade. My spine tingles simply to remember such wonderful times :)
What really gets me is the very beginning with string instruments; they're so deep and haunting, expressing the darkness and sadness of the scene.
When I was young, I'd listen to this song and my heart would ache and I would cry because I felt like I had no one and didn't fit in so it was like the song was written for me.
This is truly one of the best Disney songs in my opinion!
@jfkjrlover No matter how bad things may be there is always someone in the world that has it worse. Keep your head up and stay strong, there always something postive that comes out of struggle believe me I know.
Growing up Mufasa was my father, Growing up Bambi's mother was my mother, Ariel was my sister, Peter pan was my younger brother, Hercules was my older brother, Esmeralda was my aunt, The Genie was my weird uncle, Woody&Buzz were my best friends, Baloo&Bagheera were my babysitters, The Dalmatians were my pets, Growing up Disney was my family. I'm proud to say I am a 90's kid. I know we probably can't do anything but if you had this childhood and want your kids to as well, please repost this
@AdemiaDavenport Hate to break it to you, but the majority of those movies aren't from the 90s. Bambi is from the 40s, Peter Pan is from the 50s, 101 Dalmations and Jungle Book are from the 60s and Little Mermaid is from the 80s. Those films have been loved and watched by generations of kids and they are not strictly limited to 90s kids.
@ecermusic Excuse you "I'm proud to say I am a 90's kid." does not state that any of those movies were made in the 90's. I was more implying that the 2000 movies don't have the same charm as the ones I watched as a child. Seeing as I was born in '91 I am indeed, a 90's kid. And all I had written about the 90's was that statement ---> "I'm proud to say I am a 90's kid." So be for you go off on someone, why don't you READ.
@broadwaymike92 Yeah, completely oblivious since she's still got her nose in a book, lol. There's a guy cleaning the carpet from Aladdin in that scene too.
@kuramahatesrice yeah everything that made this movie so good cn't be found in the second one. it looks more like those religious cartoons of the 80' XD but if you can't fall asleep than that movie IS recomendeble XD
@mamamia322 wow that sucks. i was hoping it would be good then again the only disney sequal that i can think of that was good was the little mermaid 2. i liked that one
@ksmithity Have you seen yu-gi-oh Marik Pretty Much have the dilemma, except he's underground, he's dad Carved his back, whipped him, and he's not allowed to go outside because of a dead guy who died 5000 years ago said so
Gothel: So you really kept him in that bell tower for 20 years in time?!
Frollo: That's correct. I killed his gypsy witch mother and I was about to send that monster back to hell....But I was FORCED to raise him as my own son.
Gothel: Ugh...Join the club. I only kept Rapunzel in my tower because of her hair. Keeps me youthful.
Frollo: Well, I only kept Quasimodo because of his appearance. But thanks to that gyspy Esmeralda....
i find it weird that there was a guy wandering around for years with Frollo's voice. holy fuck am I glad I never met him on a dark night. the voice by itself would freak me out to no end.
Sassygirl1456 I agree makes me smile, along with 'not above them but part of them' well the 'part of them' I love makes me smile, great song Quasimodo sings it beautifully great voice xD love this film more then words can say watched it many times
Now I am informed that Alan Menken was "Amadeus", I can actually appreciate this song more. He really puts an amazing amount of energy to this song.

kuramahatesrice 5 months ago
@kuramahatesrice yeah everything that made this movie so good cn't be found in the second one. it looks more like those religious cartoons of the 80' XD but if you can't fall asleep than that movie IS recomendeble XD
mamamia322 5 months ago
@mamamia322 wow that sucks. i was hoping it would be good then again the only disney sequal that i can think of that was good was the little mermaid 2. i liked that one

Thumbs up if you think Quasimodo is the most beautiful person in this movie.

@Honeybeestarify To be honest, I think Quasimodo might be the ONLY beautiful person in this movie, truly. And I adore this film to death.

greenday3091 6 months ago 16
@greenday3091 Oh right, because the Disney version of Hunchback follows the book! Wait . . .
gothwolf13 6 months ago
@gothwolf13 You're hillarious y'know that? <-Rhetorical and sarcastic.
No shit, everybody knows that. At least those who have the sense to know that most movies don't follow the books page to page.

(WAY down under)
Gothel: So you really kept him in that bell tower for 20 years in time?!

How can Frollo say such cruel statements. Quasi, beauty is within and is displayed through character, and talent. ( Man i love it when he sings!)
DreamwithintheHeart 6 months ago 5
i find it weird that there was a guy wandering around for years with Frollo's voice. holy fuck am I glad I never met him on a dark night. the voice by itself would freak me out to no end.

@ksmithity actually, Quasimodo's mother was murdered by Frollo and the father dissapeared
