  • I LOVE that cow! I rewound the video to watch the adorable cow, like, eight times!

  • It didn't compute for, like, 5 minutes after the end of the video that you simply twisted your ankle in the hole. I was sitting here utterly astonished that you were savaged by the whistle-pig in the hole and wondering why you weren't concerned about rabies.

  • That is beautiful. It makes me miss my country home. Stupid suburbs! >:(

  • is hank ever going to finish his novel from 2007, because this is some good material for that.

  • Wow. I JUST hopped on a wrench to pop the lug nuts off of MY car.

  • "I just feel like I got as close to nowhere as I could get, and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time."

    You, sir, are extremely quotable.

  • Whistlepig hole...?? Anyone look it up?

  • @Singinevryday Groundhog

  • @Singinevryday Whistle-Pig = Groundhog :)

  • I don't know why, but I love school bus grave yards, or any big machinery grave yards, Theres something strangely beautiful about them.

  • I'm thinking about doing thoughts for places. who would watch it

  • Proud to be a Nerdfighter :))))))))))))))))))

  • I finished reading Ship Breaker about a week ago. You have no idea how awesome it is to see said book in the background of the beginning of this video.

  • After five months, I have watched every vlogbrothers video. This one, for the next-to-last line, is my favorite. I love the funny videos, but it is the profound videos like this one that keep me coming back to this channel and this wonderful community of people that I stumbled upon.

  • OMG, you just saved me if I ever get a flat. Like, I know how to change a tire and all that because my dad taught me, but seeing as I am a scrawny little nerd I can't loosen the bolts. I also never thought to jump on the crowbar, or wrench, or what that is - so thank you. That was very random and you will probably never read this, but if I ever get a flat I'll have you to thank for me not having to call triple A or have some creepy stranger help me.

  • I think this is one of my favorite Thoughts From Places Videos and I still keep coming back to rewatch it becuase it never stops being beautiful.

  • Look! Nature!

  • There used to be huge hotel in Monida back in its heyday. Sadly, it burned to the ground. My great grandfather died in that hotel.

  • This is the first Vlogborthers video I ever watched. NOSTALGIA!

  • Couldn't you just say Ground hog?

  • Ah ! XD This was beautiful ! (:

  • Should Nerdfighters buy Monida? With a population of 2, it should be pretty cheap...

  • Ouch, even though this was several months ago, I feel your pain, Hank. I sprained my ankle while on vacation in Croatia by stepping into a hole in the road.

I guess we both suck at the whole "paying attention" thing.

  • whistle-- what???

  • @pottersdaughters whistlepig, it's a nother name for pairedogs

  • Red sky at morning,shepards warning (:

  • @BaVee100 Red sky at night, shepard delight :P

  • you ankle doesnt look like an ankle

  • Why isn't this in the thoughts from places playlist?

  • Hank, I am currently writing an essay explaining why I would like to study abroad and I couldn't help myself thinking that someone had put into words what I wanted to say and done a heck of a job. Then, I remembered that it was you in this video. Thank you for being awesome you and sharing it with us.

  • a whistle pig is a groundhog for us Canadians.

  • Nowhere is always somewhere to someone.

    Love this.

  • woodwinds own brass

  • "I just feel like I got as close to nowhere as I could get, and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time."

    I loveeee that.

  • Haha, I have the excact same Merrell shoes.

  • This is one of my top five favorite Nerdfighter videos of all time! Hank did indeed not forget to be awesome. :)

  • nowhere az, all there is is a sign and a small store/house...

4 people use to live there, now only 1 does

  • Why is this not in the "Thoughts from Places" playlist?

  • That was really beautifuuul, sir.

  • Dude. Did you go in the sagging barn?? You should've!

  • I watch the sun rise every morning. It is a wonderful thing because it means I only have about 30 minutes of band rehearsal left.

  • @caddog0sugar What instrument?

  • @ichibanjack trombone

  • @caddog0sugar I feel you. So much.

  • Hank, this video is deep and all but, watching it, the only thing I could focus on was the mini-jedi, in the background of your office (computer-room?) that I noticed for the first time, that looks like it is about to use iTs light saber to chop your head in half.

  • I see on your bookshelf that you have A Passage to India, Howards End, Catch 22 and Love in the Time of Cholera in the same area. You, sir, have excellent taste in books!

  • I like a good sunrise in the middle of nowhere myself. Especially a MT, ND, MN, WY, ID, WA, and OR type sunrise. They just seem better up north. And although at 40, and despite getting so sore and stiff from sleep on the ground, I love to tent.

Should you find yourself yearning for that feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, I highly recommend Iceland. And take your brother. It would be epic.

  • that was a deep ending done by hank green lol and you forgot about Texarkana! (Texas and Arkansas)

  • Monida is like Kanarado! Kansas + Colorado = Kanarado! Lol we passed it on our way home from the Rockies.

  • You really waxed poetic at the end there, Hank. Lovely!

  • i related to the people that own that barn

  • :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD awesome vid!

  • Oh Found It(:

  • I Looked Up The Whistle Pig Hole Thing And Found Nothing

  • double you double you double you dot teenagersmind dot calm

  • This is so well said and true. I think the same way when I take the train and pass by all these little communities on the country side. They're somebody's place. Somebody sees that place everyday. I don't. I see something else.

  • I have the same sleeping pad as you! Camping ftw. I love these videos

  • THAT COW WAS SOOO CUTE! I love cows... Oh yeah cool video though!

  • I live in Idaho :3

  • "I just feel like I got as close to nowhere as I could get and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time". That's wonderfully poetic! I might put this in my quotes.

  • do they live together?

  • OOOOOHHHHH did u meet Courage the Cowardly Dog????

  • Go to Philmont!!!! One of the most beautiful places ever!!!

  • what a nice vid

    thanks hank :)

  • That was beautiful. I hope you wrote that down <3

  • Thank you for filming this video. rgterh

  • SOOO quotable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of the words you spoke literally gave me chills. Thank you. :)

  • this is one of my favorite vlogbrothers videos :)

  • <3<3<3<3<3

  • There's an actual place called Nowhere, OK

  • @M00k64 I live in Nowhere!

  • @Shashiskaa Do you live in the middle? :D

  • Dancing at wedding receptions is not that much fun anyway.

  • That is really the middle of nowhere.

  • The middle of nowhere seems pretty beautiful.

  • I want to go to there.

    Seriously.

I want to build my Tumbleweed tiny house and go to there.

  • I want to go to Monida!

  • whistlepig= prairie dog. :)

  • Monida is just like Cherry county Nebraska!

  • I can't look at Hank's eyes with out seeing them lined in the likeness of Katniss Everdeen.

  • what the hell is that 2:22 not really bad u say....

  • NO WAY. I've been there. Like right there, nowhere. And im from Europe! What are the chances?

  • The ending was really poetic Hank, you ought to write a poem with that poetic-ness.

  • That place is so beautiful! <3

  • Pussy lol

Don`t know how to change tire HA HA

  • This was incredibly poetic and gave me that feeling of reading a book (but more akin to an audiobook for obvious reasons)

  • Isn't whistlepig another word for prairie dog?

  • Wow, this video was so profound that I had to go take a dump.

    /Thoreau gave me gas.

  • that last sentence was actually quite beautiful.

  • That was awesome

  • This video was incredible. I regret not having the time to watch this until just now, because it was very worth it.

  • I watched the sun rise, it's so beautiful!

  • Whistle pig: Another name for a groundhog

  • awesome.

  • It's hard to see the beauty of nature with any resemblance of societal creations in place (such as those buzzkill roads), but if you completely remove yourself from it and just enjoy the nature around you... even the most desolate of locations are far more beautiful than ANY architectural structure can EVER try to be.

Everywhere is a place, just like every creature is a unique individual. A person. YES, EVEN COWS ARE PEOPLE. We just don't treat them as such. =/

  • Very poetic.

  • you're awesome man :)

  • Made me think of paper towns lol, then i got sad.

  • what a beautiful trip.

  • Ahaha I have that Yoda 8-ball. I think it came in a happy meal ages ago?

  • i doubt you will read this since its old but i just wanted you to know that i found it profound and i cried.

  • I just feel like i got as close to nowhere as i could get and found out it was more of a place than ive been in a long time.... <3 Love u Hank

  • one of the few good things about getting up at 5:55 on school mornings is watching the sunrise

  • Who the f are the 38 people who didnt like this AMAZING video?!?!?

  • Nice............Just nice

  • I think this is my favorite Hank video ever. Or at least as of recent.

  • Hank, you are so cool.

  • whats awhistle pig?

  • Imaginary lines, I'm sick of them.

  • insightful :)

  • I think you and I sprained our ankles on the same day.

  • It is bizarre to me how many people whose existences are actualized through the internet are so determined to consider that flight from civilization as more "real" and meaningful to them than that interconnectivity they left behind. And they return to in order to make the realness of that "real" really real.

  • I actually looked up whistle pig. Pretty interesting stuff.

  • Shots of nowhere give me anxiety haha. I feel like everything that could have gone wrong did on this trip. Luckily your friends got married. :D

  • whistle pig?? aka ground hog?

  • Gosh you are certainly awesome Hank.

  • Poetic

  • 1:30 , u can use ur phone??

  • NEAT-OL' FACTS!!! Cows.

During WWII watching cows became a very useful strategy for two reason. The 1st reason is that if you saw LIVING cows in a field it meant the field was not likely to be full of mines. The 2nd and most humorous being that when a cow is ready for milking they would seek out and stare at the nearest human in hope he/she would milk them to ease the pain(When the utter is full it hurts). The effect would be a whole lot of cows staring at the entrenched German forces.

  • thats crazy. Its just not like that in the UK, even in the middle of nowhere your close to somewhere. I was actually thinking what would happen if you got hurt or the car broke down..... and it happened toyou! :(

  • Monida would make a great scary movie. Because there's no one around to hear their screams. >:D

  • What a pretty sunrise! I need a vaycay like that.

  • The thing you said about grids and imaginary lines reminded me of this line from John Donne: "Of meridians and parallels man hath weaved out a net, and this net thrown upon the heavens, and now they are his own." I think he wrote that with some irony...

  • that was beautiful :)

  • Monida is a Paper Town

  • This is a really nice video. Thanks :)

  • I was born and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho...."nowhere". Now I live in Philadelphia... "somewhere." And sometimes, it's nice to see "nowhere" again, Thanks Hank :)

  • Hank! You are so right! I am watching this on my way home from hiking down to Havasupai Falls, which is in the middle of nowhere. Never before had I felt so at peace and seen so much beauty!

    DFTBA!

  • Hm... Monida sounds a lot like South Pass City, WY. It's an old gold miner's town with a population of 'about 7' That's counting dogs and horses.

  • You started to channel Shatner near the end there.

  • Did you like Ship breaker? because i honestly just finished reading it before I watched this video. I liked it. Not the greatest book ever, but decent.

  • Aw, Hank wins at feel-good vids.

  • I just realized that you remind me of Matthew Gray Gubler. I approve of this.

  • someone should make a movie by editing all the vlogbrothers videos together, and filling it with different advice in life, or life lessons

  • Monida sounds a lot like Agloe

  • @FolieAMoi12 PT reference!

  • "i got as close to nowhere as i could get and found out it was more of a place then anywhere i have been in a long time." i love you :)

  • Nowhere sounds pretty cool!

  • @vlogbrothers You guys just got so much more awesome, if that's even possible. :D

  • Too deep, did not comprehend

  • In which Hank thinks a lot about being in the middle of nowhere, and what that means, and how every place is equally in it's placeness. He also shows off his sprained ankle, a broken down barn, a very cute calf and his tire-changing skills.

"How every place is equally in ITS placeness", not "How every place is equally in IT IS placeness".

    Grammar fail, Hank.

  • It's like when my parents went to Lopez island to their friend's wedding. And left me and my sister at home with my grandparents, all the way on the other side of the country.

  • That's just... beautiful :)

  • thank you for taking us there i live in la (not proud ) so i enjoyed the trip

  • The words that were spoken were just as beautiful as the video itself. You are fabulous, my friend.

  • nice

  • This video was about nothing in particular, but its nothingness was more substantive than most videos I have seen in along time.

  • Just because what we see out our windows becomes what think of as the world doesn't mean that there isn't a whole globe out there, just doing its thing, being itself, making life possible.

I just feel like I got as close to no where as I can get, and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time.

    So good!

  • Aw man, Hank, you're so poetic! Love hearing what you think about everything and nothing put in perspective like that :D

  • Guitar says, "This machine Pwns noobs" lol

  • saved to favorites

  • question: do u script ur videos? or free flow?

  • i enjoy hearing you talk. enough said. =)

  • Hank...I'm happy that you showed the title of the book you're reading (even if unintentionally) so I could look it up on Amazon. Now...I really want to read it. It sounds fascinating. It helps that the author made a video about the book and his thoughts behind it. It makes it that much more appealing. You should sneak books you think we should read in your videos more often...it could just be inadvertent advertising.

  • isn't john supposed to make a video today. I was really looking forward to it. I'm very disappointed! John you are my favorite and everything but, it punishment time!

  • Comment removed

  • @cherry123ify I think you could manage to cut John some slack after the late pass of Esther.

  • well written. great punchline.

  • This video made my anus squeeze

  • You guys are amazing. :)

  • John, where is ze video?

  • I love the lofty thought Hank videos. Make more! :)

  • Being out in the middle of nowhere is not really that fun when it's not really out in the middle of nowhere. If it really is out in the middle of nowhere, that sounds like it would be a cool place to be for a while. Sounds like you had a good time.

  • whistle pigs are cute!

  • this is beautiful <3

  • Very nice monologue

  • that was deep, yo

  • i love you guys.

you manage to make nothing into everything.

    if that makes any sense.

  • are you dry hump the car?

  • Deep, Hank. Deep.

  • @ClubPenguinVsRS i would like this as well, but there are exactly 100 likes now and i just can't be that person to ruin that perfection.

  • @lmercado9999 moron

  • Aww, on Satu
