It didn't compute for, like, 5 minutes after the end of the video that you simply twisted your ankle in the hole. I was sitting here utterly astonished that you were savaged by the whistle-pig in the hole and wondering why you weren't concerned about rabies.
I liked this thoughts from places video. Especially this quote... "I just feel like I got as close to nowhere as I could get, and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time." Makes me miss Nunavut and the time I spent 500 miles from the north pole. Such a beautiful, remote place! I hope I can go back again someday. :)
I finished reading Ship Breaker about a week ago. You have no idea how awesome it is to see said book in the background of the beginning of this video.
After five months, I have watched every vlogbrothers video. This one, for the next-to-last line, is my favorite. I love the funny videos, but it is the profound videos like this one that keep me coming back to this channel and this wonderful community of people that I stumbled upon.
OMG, you just saved me if I ever get a flat. Like, I know how to change a tire and all that because my dad taught me, but seeing as I am a scrawny little nerd I can't loosen the bolts. I also never thought to jump on the crowbar, or wrench, or what that is - so thank you. That was very random and you will probably never read this, but if I ever get a flat I'll have you to thank for me not having to call triple A or have some creepy stranger help me.
Ouch, even though this was several months ago, I feel your pain, Hank. I sprained my ankle while on vacation in Croatia by stepping into a hole in the road.
I guess we both suck at the whole "paying attention" thing.
Hank, I am currently writing an essay explaining why I would like to study abroad and I couldn't help myself thinking that someone had put into words what I wanted to say and done a heck of a job. Then, I remembered that it was you in this video. Thank you for being awesome you and sharing it with us.
Hank, this video is deep and all but, watching it, the only thing I could focus on was the mini-jedi, in the background of your office (computer-room?) that I noticed for the first time, that looks like it is about to use iTs light saber to chop your head in half.
I see on your bookshelf that you have A Passage to India, Howards End, Catch 22 and Love in the Time of Cholera in the same area. You, sir, have excellent taste in books!
I like a good sunrise in the middle of nowhere myself. Especially a MT, ND, MN, WY, ID, WA, and OR type sunrise. They just seem better up north. And although at 40, and despite getting so sore and stiff from sleep on the ground, I love to tent.
Should you find yourself yearning for that feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, I highly recommend Iceland. And take your brother. It would be epic.
This is so well said and true. I think the same way when I take the train and pass by all these little communities on the country side. They're somebody's place. Somebody sees that place everyday. I don't. I see something else.
"I just feel like I got as close to nowhere as I could get and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time". That's wonderfully poetic! I might put this in my quotes.
It's hard to see the beauty of nature with any resemblance of societal creations in place (such as those buzzkill roads), but if you completely remove yourself from it and just enjoy the nature around you... even the most desolate of locations are far more beautiful than ANY architectural structure can EVER try to be.
Everywhere is a place, just like every creature is a unique individual. A person. YES, EVEN COWS ARE PEOPLE. We just don't treat them as such. =/
It is bizarre to me how many people whose existences are actualized through the internet are so determined to consider that flight from civilization as more "real" and meaningful to them than that interconnectivity they left behind. And they return to in order to make the realness of that "real" really real.
During WWII watching cows became a very useful strategy for two reason. The 1st reason is that if you saw LIVING cows in a field it meant the field was not likely to be full of mines. The 2nd and most humorous being that when a cow is ready for milking they would seek out and stare at the nearest human in hope he/she would milk them to ease the pain(When the utter is full it hurts). The effect would be a whole lot of cows staring at the entrenched German forces.
thats crazy. Its just not like that in the UK, even in the middle of nowhere your close to somewhere. I was actually thinking what would happen if you got hurt or the car broke down..... and it happened toyou! :(
The thing you said about grids and imaginary lines reminded me of this line from John Donne: "Of meridians and parallels man hath weaved out a net, and this net thrown upon the heavens, and now they are his own." I think he wrote that with some irony...
The thing you said about grids and imaginary lines reminded me of this line from John Donne: "Of meridians and parallels man hath weaved out a net, and this net thrown upon the heavens, and now they are his own." I think he wrote that with some irony...
I was born and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho...."nowhere". Now I live in Philadelphia... "somewhere." And sometimes, it's nice to see "nowhere" again, Thanks Hank :)
Hank! You are so right! I am watching this on my way home from hiking down to Havasupai Falls, which is in the middle of nowhere. Never before had I felt so at peace and seen so much beauty!
Did you like Ship breaker? because i honestly just finished reading it before I watched this video. I liked it. Not the greatest book ever, but decent.
In which Hank thinks a lot about being in the middle of nowhere, and what that means, and how every place is equally in it's placeness. He also shows off his sprained ankle, a broken down barn, a very cute calf and his tire-changing skills.
"How every place is equally in ITS placeness", not "How every place is equally in IT IS placeness".
It's like when my parents went to Lopez island to their friend's wedding. And left me and my sister at home with my grandparents, all the way on the other side of the country.
Just because what we see out our windows becomes what think of as the world doesn't mean that there isn't a whole globe out there, just doing its thing, being itself, making life possible.
I just feel like I got as close to no where as I can get, and found out that it was more of a place than anywhere I've been in a long time.
Hank...I'm happy that you showed the title of the book you're reading (even if unintentionally) so I could look it up on Amazon. Now...I really want to read it. It sounds fascinating. It helps that the author made a video about the book and his thoughts behind it. It makes it that much more appealing. You should sneak books you think we should read in your videos more often...it could just be inadvertent advertising.
