  • I really think this is the saddest ending I've ever seen to any film, I understand the symbollic aspects but the fact that they probably died drowning like they had so many times in the lab, brutal to think about

  • Damn it! I was REALLY hoping it would be a happy ending. I hate when writers kill off the main character(s). Especially when you're really rooting for them. Such a piss off.

  • I love this movie :)

  • wooowww, hope that they found their island, even if the island was just death through their eyes. but at least they were free :') I absolutely loved the movie! shows us that we are not the only ones capable of adaption, survival, and overcoming adversity. we are also no the only victims of cruel torture. I hope they make more movies like this!!!!!!!

  • omg i was literally in tears at the end...

    :'(

  • I do hope that island in the credits indicates that they made it.

  • The movie ended where it started: in water.

  • keep on crying. love book and movie

  • Welp.

Thanks for the movie. I'm gonna go slit my wrists now. :(

  • This film was so damn beautiful.

The animation is spot on, perfect.

Everything about it is just gorgeous, and flawless.

And it really upsets me and stumps me that now a days theirs no films like this.

I'll always love Plague Dogs <3

  • In my opinion, this ending is the most honest one. There is no island, no free utopia, no afterlife or heaven, only death that awaits. This brute fact forces us to consider hard what we do with the time that is given to us, what is important in life. The innocent need our protection, suffering has to end. Love thy neighbour not because it's demanded of you but because it will be the only true solace in your life. This film teaches us that animals, dogs in particular, are our neighbours as well.

  • @TheHardProblem That is a nigh impeccably articulated comment.

  • This ending is the original intended ending.

The author, Richard Adams, changed the book's ending in later reprints for reasons unknown to me, I guess he thought it too depressing after all.

  • wow i actually watched the whole movie. not that it was bad or anything...i liked it

  • I can't believe I watched the whole thing.

I'm gonna go wash my eyes out with soap and pray or something now.

  • Nice ending song.

  • I just really dont understand this film

  • so sad, very touching movie

  • AMAZING! I LOVE IT<3 thank you very much for uploading this :)

  • BAN ANIMAL TESTING! TEST ON CONVICTS!

  • @MrWiLDAPEMAN How the fuck is that any better

  • @Rhaxma Because animals are innocent while convicts arent..

  • @MrWiLDAPEMAN lies, some convicts are innocent but were wrongly accused and thrown into jail because the penal system has been toyed with so much by the government that as it stands now they can throw anyone in jail just because they feel like it..

  • This was just so amazingly sad. I remember reading this at about 14 after reading Watership Down. I didn't know there was a film of it until now. Thanks for sharing.

  • was there actually a real island? or where they just hoping and a little crazy? i understand that they free either way (through death or actually getting somewhere) im just wondering. ^^

  • @4yr7ryleeroo

from what I read... both. They were a bit dilusional, and there actually turned out to be an island.

  • @4yr7ryleeroo it's supposed to go either way. Really it's just up to the viewer, but like you said, all that matters is that they were free.

  • Sooooooo..... I suppose they DID die...?

  • ive been told not to watch this. ending is unknown but likely chance of doom. im going to hug my dog really good when i see her next week. i also heard in the book that snitter returned to his master and cant remember what happened to rowf though. of course major differences between book and major probably because of money and legal issues.

  • @thedesklauncher in the book, the guy who took back snitter also adopted rowf and the people chasing the dogs were in trouble

  • THANK YOU for uploading this.

  • WTF was up with Richard Adams?!

  • the ending is terribly sad...Judging by movements of the waves they were actually moving away from the island....

  • Wow. Such a beautiful and powerful film. Haven't been moved by a film like this is in like, well 'ever'.

  • I love this movie these dogs never gave up. Thats all it takes is courage and some faith and u'll end up where uwant 2 b.

  • arent these kinds of movies supposed to have happy ending? all this is is death death and more death. demented the writer of the book is.

  • @Darktwist362 The happy ending is that they escaped their torturers and made it to the Island. More kids need to know the truth about how we really treat animals. Or do you think kids should only see the Disney fantasy propaganda about the subject?

  • @Darktwist362 What kinds of movies? This isn't a movie for kids. It's a movie that tells a story. What, do you think because it's about dogs and it's animated, it's for kids? Lolnope. I would NEVER show ANY kid this movie, or Felidae, or probably even Watership Down, as they aren't movie for kids. This movie and Felidae especially, kids wouldn't understand. So stop thinking that animated movies about animals instantly equal kiddie shit.

  • WHATS UP WITH THE CAGED MONKEY!!

  • Im glad I saw the uncut version first. In the US version, the music just starts while theyre swimming instead of surprising you.

  • Can someone explain the whole thing with the book? Cause I dont understand at all, even though I have it. I get the sybolism and stuff but how come everytime someone describes the ending to the book its different?

  • I'll go ahead and give you the spoiler from the book. The man telling this story tells his listener " you didn't really expectme to let the dogs die". He picked them up in a boat beyond the fog and he kept them hidden away. I felt better about this story after reading the book.

  • @originalh8r When the book was originally released it didnt have that. In fact I think there may be different versions of the book, because I only remember it describing them in heaven.

  • This movie is so good I'm going to go buy and the book

  • Comment removed

  • It is 25 years since I saw this ending and it still upsets me now! I am no activist but I don't like the thought of suffering animals!

  • The book ended so much better IMO. The book also had some things that were actually pretty happy, like the doctor taking the monkey. The movie just leaves everything kind of unhappy.

  • @Jabasourus What was the ending of the book?

  • One of our friends told me and my sister about it and since she saw it when she was little, she's been against animal testing

  • I was disappointed in this movie. I guess because I had just recently watched Felidae, which makes me nearly vomit while watching, and I just don't think Plague Dogs has that element to it. Although Plague Dogs is definitely more emotional, I was totally rock-solid watching this movie. It kinda upset me, most emotional movies make me cry, but this one just didn't do it for me. I wish I could have enjoyed this as much as the other commenters here.

  • @Sinesith I agree compleatly, So don't worry, It's not just you ^.^'

  • @Sinesith As long as you wish you could have enjoyed it or at least didnt go flaming on it, its fine that you didnt enjoy it. I cant stand when people think that if they dont like something, no one should.

  • @Sinesith

Felidae is a good movie but a FANTASTIC book. Nothing about it is done for shock, it all has meaning.

And the Plague Dogs... well. I guess you really have to be able to imagine what those dogs went through. Imagine being taken to a place with no sunlight, a place where you're caged and tortured for reasons you don't understand. Then imagine escaping and being equally confused and overwhelmed by everything. It's a realistic movie, not trying to be sad, just honest.

  • EVERYBODY there was an island around where they were heading twords, maybe they were strong enough to swim there and found a pet owner who took care of them and they lived happily ever after. just cus the movie ended with the fog clearing the screen while they were swimming doesnt mean that they obviously died :D

  • @MrDarkcap Have you read the book? : / In the book it says clearly that they died. There is a "happier" version of their ending that he wrote, but still. Their "Island" is described by Snitter in the book as a place where there are only dogs and "good men" , and where they'll be free. In some ways, this could be interpreted as death, or a version of "heaven" for them.

But that's just in the book. the movie is more obscure about their "death." So, maybe, in the movie you could be right.

  • This movie was just so moving... I am definitely going to read the book now, i know i should have read it first but i only just came across it on youtube tonight after many years having not watched it. I was only a youngster around 5 or 6 so i literally only remember the fox in the mine and when the dogs are in incinerator. Besides i heard the book was more complicated and being 15 it should be easier to understand now, anyway im still crying while writing this comment, so sad but beautiful.

  • why dont you guys just listen to the Credits song Lyrics?

  • @KINGDOMHEART89 read the book.

  • im crying. oh god. that was sad.

  • Snitter wanted to go to a place where humans cannot harm them, realistically that would have been death, the ending matters not whether they made it to the island or died, they were free.

  • I saw this movie in 1982, aged about 12yrs, when it first came out.

Even now I remember how extremely moved I was after watching it and trying to hold in tears as we walked out of the Cinema.

I've never seen another film that upset me so much.

  • Personally, I prefer the book ending to the movie...

  • Comment removed

  • I think it's more poignant if they don't find the island. :C More tragic, but also liberating because living with and without the white coats, they were miserable, but this 'island'/death is their only escape from a life of pain they couldn't get away from.

  • the upbeat gospel music just makes me even sadder, but god damn was this a beautiful movie

  • Oh, and thanks for uploading! I'm stuck here in Germany with the horribly cutted version...

  • Comment removed

  • When I watch this film, I feel no joy. Just an impeding sense of doom. I feel like I will never be happy again, and I always cry so much. However, this is still one of the best films I've ever seen, though I'll never take pleasure in watching it. Not because of what's in the film, just because of how it makes me feel. Depressed.

Oh, and the gospel song at the end? So misleading, but maybe it's to cheer you up after such a devestating ending.

  • @musicisinsideofme I know exactly how you feel. Last time I saw this flick, I was down for at least 3 days. I really like this movie, but it hurts to watch it.

  • omg wat happens next are they dead, are they alive? i want to know wat happens.

  • ok, WHAT IS UP WITH THAT FUCKING MONKEY?

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa Monkeys can carry bubonic plague and not be affected. Its part of why the monkey is so important to the film

  • @SilvrWingsDragon you mean an Monkey going all ''forever alone'' in a pot throughout(i didnt even spelled that right xD) the movie is important?

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa It explains it more in the book. The scientists put it into a crazy sort of solitary confinement, no scents, no outer stimulation, permanently in the dark, with just a bit of food and water to keep it sustained, to see how a lack of complete outside stimulants would effect it's mentality.

  • @LukaTisus there was a book? is it called plague dogs then? i would lvoe to read it

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa

Its a test to see how long the monkey could survive

with little food and water, totally alone, if I remeber correctly. It's explained in the book.

  • @jasonfangirl O.e if thats the realy story behind him wow thats pretty fucked up

  • Damn!!! I hate movie with unown endings!! it makes me think to much, this is such a depressing movie but i still love it!!

  • Oh no... the ending was vague enough, and I did feel terrible for their life of nothing but suffering and struggle. I really hoped Rowlf would know some human kindness even if it was cut short. But the ending song just broke the flood gates.

Then, no matter how bad you feel for them, you have to somewhat feel worse for the other animals.

Great movie, but I can't say I wont be mildly depressed today.

  • sad very sad i think they passed away but it leaves room for imagination

  • @suicideloverangel since the credits show the island, i bet they made it

  • @Animeforever61 mild humor?!?!?! Where? I tell ya, finding humor in The Plague Dogs is like trying to find a needle in a haystack!

  • @franky975 breaks my heart every time I can't stand it. Watch something cheerful and optimistic otherwise you'll fall into a clinical depression.

  • thats my saddest movie ive ever seen i cried like a bitch best movie :)

  • at least they were free.... its sick what people do to animals, no one wants to be locked in a cage and tested, that is why animals are smarter then people, they dont abuse, and even if abused can forgive, they can do things we cant, and survive in the worst conditions.

  • This almost brought me to tears...and my dog is laying next to me. Wow. Very, VERY powerful movie. I'm so glad I watched it.

  • this truly beats Disney! Wish that all kids got to see this so they could get more respect for other living creatures and see how brutal life can be for animals.

  • whats the name of ending song?

  • @CorinaTheVampire ime and Tide (The Plague Dogs)

  • It's so sad that pretty much their whole lives was just suffering :[ At least it came to an end no matter what.

  • 11:11pm... Had to watch the last part... Result: CRYING MY BLOODY EYES OUT!!!

  • This was a good movie, some parts of it had mild humor, a lot of it had mystery and suspence, sadness, violence, disturbing and scary images, blood and gore and graphic material. This was one hell of a good movie, although I wished they made the ending more like where they showed the dogs making it to the island and finally were free and lived on the island peacefully or at least have it end like the book. Although I believe weather they died or made it to the island and lived, they were free.

  • The ending song softens the blow, but in the book and movie it's clear- the two dogs die.

  • "Reet...Mazer...Yows..."

    Darkness, sinking, cold.

By far the most morbid thing I've read. The movie did the book great justice, but it doesn't evenly slightly compare to the story I'd constructed while reading it.

Anybody touched by the movie, or has never SEEN the movie...read the book! I recommend reading the book first, it's one of the few where the movie enhances the book, not vice versa.

  • Such an awesome, touching, sad, free-willed movie.

  • I always cry at the end..

  • it's not as sad to me as people say it is.idk it just dosen't make me sad

  • ofcourse they made it to the island -.-

    ITS IN THE CREDITS.

  • @Harleyquinn191 Not exactly, we see an island but there is no answer to if they had the strength to reach it, or if it the island is just in Snitter's head and Ralph was just trying to comfort him by saying he could see it too. In the book they happen to find Snitter's owner on a boat and they end up living with him, so really they did live if you want to go wit the book's ending.

  • Hhhhh......Did they die or live? Did they really have the plague or was it just a possibility?

This was my first time seeing this movie and I like how it tell you stright out what happend at the end and makes you think about it.

  • @doglover12345andfr

The ending could be percieved either way, but I always interperated it to mean that the island was "the light at the end of a long tunnel" and that they died to be free, but you could believe there was an island, it never really says. And they were thought to have carried the plague, as rats did back when it ravenged the people. They walked through a room that contained experiments using the Bubonic plague, so everyone thought they could be carrying it but I doubt it.

  • @doglover12345andfr In the book they found Snitter's owner on a boat and I'm pretty sure they didn't have the plague, they just got close to getting it when they knocked over the rat cage.

  • @Skittywolf Yeah, but that was a chapter that was added later and Mr.Adams diden't even want to write it. It's not his ending...it's the ending the public forsed him to wright.Because of that, I am not counting it as the real ending of the story.

  • @doglover12345andfr Oh, I never knew that. Well, I liked this ending better anyway.

  • @Timebubbles I wouldn't necessarily call that a second book, as much as a second edition to the same book. It has the same title after all. Consider it an epilogue added after the fact.

  • In the end it boils down to fear. Man's attempt allay his fears through control, manifest in the raising of armies, defense departments, development of germ weaponry, experimentation on animals. And when man's control lapses for a moment?

  • @Timebubbles There is not a sequel to Plague Dogs... and yes, in the book they are rescued, although it is an ending that Richard Adams did not want to write.

  • this ending is so much better than that in the novel...in the novel they are found by people in a boat and given homes; Snitter's master turns out not to die. I like them swimming out to sea as an ambiguous ending much better because it feels more powerful to me.

  • listen to the song..I feel no pain no more, I left this cruel world behind..they died..but they were free at least..

  • That's so sad! They wanted to get away so badly... ;;

  • This movie was great. I own the book and figured I'd watch the movie first the same way I did with Watership Down. In truth though, I think I like the rabbits better...poor dogs...I am glad to hear the book ends differently though. The movie was well done and pretty good though. Thanks for sharing

  • Anyone read the book? There were saved by a boat there - the movie, however, chose to imply they drowned, instead....

  • @sookan 'the subjective is crossed with the objective' part I agree with you that it was where they wouldn't be hurt anymore, but his hallusinations were mostly of his home and master. It wasn't until the end that he 'saw' the island, so wouldn't it be that he wanted to go home to his master but later thought of the island as 'home'? Either way I still agree with you

@PlagueDogs This is my second time watching this. I love this movie thanks for sharing!

  • i'm sobbing like a little baby right now. seriously. :(

  • I've heard the end credit song before I think :/

  • everytime i see this movie i cry so bad :.(

  • I read the book.

They arrived to their island and they finally found their owner (snitter's "human")

    It's the happy end.

  • @Cerebrum95 thank you for telling us

  • @Cerebrum95 Well, actually, that wasn't the "real" ending. The author had complaints from readers to change the ending because it was too sad.

  • I kept flipping through the credits hopping they'd be there... but I knew they wouldn't be... :(

  • Pretty good. I like Watership Down better, but then I grew up watching that one....

  • @SamhainTheDark I was thinking of the Isle of Man as well, who knows.

  • @Popcultureguy3000 They had 7 "Senior Animators" on this too, so I'm sure the burden wasn't on those 6 entirely. :-)

  • well at least tonight they will be sleeping...........with the fishys ;D

  • @david1is1exuberant Haha. Real funny cockface. How aobut I toss you into the ocean and laugh as you fucking dorwn. Bastard.

  • @CJPrime931 u mad?

  • @xXLikeAbosSXx09 No. I'm, just giving you a warning.

  • @CJPrime931 last time i checked that comment was towards david not me.

  • :D..........lol

  • Saddest movie of all time but I always like to think that they made it to their island.

  • @TheWCWite If you read the book there is a much better ending.

  • omg the ending made me cry so much but the music makes you feel somewhat better knowing that they're in a better place TTωTT

  • Fuck it, I'm still crying.

  • did they make it to the island? ;o

  • @SonicRavers 5:50 YUP :D

  • @KeshnerfFilms how do u no ;O mayeb they died b4 they got theres ;,<

  • @SonicRavers awww :<

  • @SonicRavers I like to think that they did.

  • @SonicRaver yes they did im sure...?!

  • @SonicRavers Ralph said: "Our island". I don't think there was any physical 'island'. I think he meant death, which would of been better than being caught and being killed or taken back to the testing facility. And he also could have been trying to comfort Snitter before death.

  • @SonicRavers They died, I think. The island is actually supposed to be their heaven.

  • Well that was an interesting movie. Weird, but pretty cool.

  • Of Snitter's operation, 'the subjective is crossed with the objective'.

Their objective was to find a place where man couldn't harm them anymore.

In Snitter's mind, the manifestation of that place was the island. In truth, it had to have been death.

Or, you could believe there's an island off the British coast shrouded by mist and only half real.

I like the latter interpretation better, but in the end, whether they lived or died didn't matter - they were free.

  • @sookan, well if it didn't matter if they lived or died, this movie could have been 10 minutes long with them dying at the end and still have the same effect. I would say what mattered was that they had each other throughout the journey, as the journey holds meaning over the destination. So it was the journey and them staying together which was more powerful then whether they got there or not. The ending can be left unclear because regardless, they stayed together. Friendship was their freedom.

  • sick movie dark and sad but i make you love your dog just alittle more

  • I wanted to cry when The Tod died.

  • That ending was way better than titanic. Suck it Leo.

  • looking through the credits the show and island through the fog. Dem dogs made it to freedom.

  • Thanks for posting these videos. I saw this movie as a kid, just once, but I never forgot. I had no idea what I was getting myself at the video store, I thought it was just another animated movie with animals. I've never seen it anywhere else, I don't know anyone else that ever heard of it. I thought I'd be lucky to find some clips, never mind the whole movie! Thanks again.

  • NOT THE TODD

  • *starts crying*

ITS MOTHER 3 ALL OVER AGAIN D'X

  • Wow... did they die? I mean... has anyone read the ending of the book and found out if they found the island???

  • @ungirley2 The original ending of the book is like the end of the film, so I think it’s up to your imagination over whether they get to the island or die or not (or if the island is even real). Subsequent editions of the book have a different ending where the dogs are rescued from the sea and returned to Snitter's master (in these editions it turns out he was only injured and not killed when he got ran over).

  • @lkcrm94 Oh. Well im going to imagin both ways.

They got to the island and eat on crab, fish, coconuts, and other stuff, and felt free.

They didnt get to the island and sadly drowned, from not being able to breath, and their paws hurting badly.

(Yup... kinda sad and kinda not.)

  • Did they die?

  • @luvtheoc101 That's left to your interpretation. For me, the bigger questions are: was the island real or was it another fragment of Snitter's imagination? Does the island represent freedom (heaven) for them or is it a physical island? I believe they did die as they vanish into the fog and the sounds of paddling stops quite abruptly and they are not seen again as the credits move through the spot they had vanished through.

  • 15 people should drown.

  • Q_Q *flees to water and saves the dogs* D':

  • This movie is so sad but so true to life. I feel so bad for those dogs, but I love how the message of animal abuse is spoken out in this film. BTW, my fav is Rowlf!

  • so...did they make it or no? don't get it

  • @AlisonJBranscum1231

I did alot of thinking on it. The only thing I can guess is they died at the end (but they didn't show it) by drowning or plague. I think they didn't give a real ending because they wanted people to habe their own thoerys. That's my thoery.

  • the ending makes me so sad its like they were never happy the whole movie i know they are free now but i wanted to see them at least happy

  • to me...the final song makes me cry even more.....:'(

  • I just finished reading the book today and immediately wanted to check this movie out when I heard it was made.

Somehow it's such a well done adaptation (despite the book being more detailed). Thanks for uploading this uncut version!

  • i guess 50 km to isle of man :( ....

    how can they do that...

  • im crying it is so sad the poor dogs just trying to find soome where to have a home and live. The never get to find it.

  • I honestly loved this movie more than anything I've seen in the past.

I will point out that the book apparently implies that they could have made it or died a bit clearer, the movie makes it a harsh idea to think they live.

Either way they are free. That much is true *tears well up*

Great movie, dusty and beautiful, sad yet rewarding. I ended it with tears welling up, but with hope that they made it [and belief that if they didn't they still did in another way.]

    Great movie.

  • Nope, nope, not believing any comments about how they didn't make it. In my mind and heart they are relaxing on an island chasing frogs and living the peaceful life that they deserve.

  • The ending is sad because the "island" is only snitter's imagination and is not really there, therefore the dogs definitely die. But also what really got me sad is what they say at the end... When Rowf still has hopes and says "Just stay with me... I'll get you there."

  • wonder what happened or how they were swimming for
