THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VID!! i know some people who would call the girl at 4:36 goth...and that goth family picture, is sorta creepy. i live in a small town, and never see that. i've actually never seen a hardcore 'goth' in my life. though, i know that they are SO MUCH more than that. i've wanted to be emo and goth... right now i'm loving the goth scene...
I watched this to see if I could label myself. I can't. I'm just.... me. I might be a mall goth. But I don't think I am. I know I'm devoted to black though. X)
@dadandevasing I get you, some ppl think that just cuz someone shops at a mall for goth cloths makes them a "mall goth" thats stupid because sometimes there just isnt any other gothic store around. Just as long as one is true with the expressions and lifestyle then whats the big deal?
@erickamos666 YES! THANK YOU! All my friends shop at Hot Topic, which I'm sure you know gets a lot of hate, but we love the freaky styles and pop culture. =) We know how to stand out ;D
I like the almost scientific approach and contrast. very well done thank you for your video. While you grouped things together I found this to be very fitting seeing as how most of these different "types" ie scene, cyber/punk, because these things have a tendency to stem from the same thing. goth was around way before 'emo', hence it did stem from this type of culture in some way, almost like a cousin a couple of times removed. Different things. While some grouping are closer like punk.
I also included steam punk/cyber under “goth” fashion even though they aren’t necessarily “goth”. Some people who enjoy gothic rock also enjoy bright dreadlocks and neon clothes. Similarly some people who enjoy emo music also like accessories/hairstyles associated with the “ scene” style. My intention is to contrast different styles worn by people within the goth and emo subcultures. I am not trying to define the official parameters of emo or goth fashion from an academic point of view.
@GKazooProducton Why do I keep hearing that? WTF is wrong with Slipknot and Marilyn Manson? Isn't part of being "goth" or "emo" or "punk" or whatever to be your own person? Why does it matters what one listens to? All music is influential in one way or another.
@KryssiTheMetalMama There's nothing wrong Slipknot or Marilyn Manson, but they're not goth and to those who are a part of the goth subculture it can get annoying when people claim that they are or think listening to those bands makes them goth. So sometimes the annoyance can lead into insults or things that might come across as insults when they really aren't. As for why it matters what one listens to... it doesn't. But the goth subculture mainly revolves around the music and I'm out of space.
@KryssiTheMetalMama I will put it to you this way. There are people that like to say Epica is gothic or that After Forever is Gothic. Problem there is most goth people are not listening to those bands. IF they are then they are metal heads. Metalheads also dress in black but it's mostly band shirts and black pants. The music of both bands is not even in the style of what goths like to listen to. Does that mean they can't listen to it? No but they are not goth bands.
what up with the emo-bashing people?? we are not pathectic excuses! Teens today are making they're own variation of emo, wich is what you people are talking about! Emo is a lifestyle but we prefer to keep it to ourselves and not brag about it like most kids do! most emo teens today are wannabe emo kids, we are not a sad excuse, we are not who we say we are. we are discovering ourselves. Is that so wrong?
This video its seems to be true.. But Emos and Goths should be compared because emo is only a trend and goth is a life style. and the reason why gothic is very popular is because gothic has no age limit so what ever if your 60 yrs. old it dosent matter if you're a goth. While emo is a bit popular for teens like me i'm just 13 to become an emo. anyway i want to say is that. Gothic does not rocks. but for you guys it does,(no offence) 1 more thing i dont want the Gothic hair style
Excellent job on teh video. Nice to see a legit and unbiased and actually EDUCATIONAL video. Though I didnt care for the part where it said that teenagers were "mallgoths" because thats stereotyping. Yes a huge majority are those annnoying mallgoth hot topic poseurs but what about teh real ones? Im a teenager and Bauhaus and Specimen are my favorite bands. I also like Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Rosetta Stone etc. It seems to have left out the fact taht not all teens are poseurs.
Yeah, I know it’s possible for teens to be in to Goth, I myself got in to old school gothic rock when I was 15. I guess my wording could have been a bit more explicit. I’ll add an annotation to the video.
@EndorphinsNYC Lol dont change anything just for me I was just throwing that out there. I just felt a bit left out is all. But I see what you were saying, most teen "goths" are a bunch of mallgoths who hang out in Hot Topic and thinking theyre "dark" for being Marilyn Mansona nd Slipknot fans.
@GKazooProduction I try to keep my videos as accurate and nonbiased as possible. In the event that I realize in retrospect that something could have been worded better I usually go back and add a little footnote. I also added some annotations to my other “The gothic subcultures historic origins” upon realizing I had made some broad statement that needed clarification.
@GKazooProduction this video wasn't educational because the person who made it doesn't even understand what emo is... it also started in the 80s and the bands listed as emo are completely wrong
I'm in the younger range of the gothic age group. I may only be 12 years old, but I can see more of the beauty and grace of the gothic style, as well as the beautiful aspect of the art style in which it revolves around, instead of how most people my age view it, as a "dark stereotype for angsty teens", which really upsets me, because there is so much more to goth than what most people see.
i would say you did a good job on this vid, but i am only goth, and cannot say weather the emo half is what they feel is correct, but i have noticed that emo does not seem to grow into adult hood, and to me that is the way that i could tell you if you were goth or not... how ever i have seen emo weddings, but not so much with emo families, but as EndorphinsNYC said, it could be because it is a ew statement.
Im 43, with the older generation ive noticed most of us tend to be Victorian Goths, I was there in the 80s when it started as punk was dying out, it was an extremely surreal time!!!
@tokiwartooth95 Dude, don't be so quick to criticize goth. I'm a goth, and I greatly respect metalheads, metal fans and heavy metal music. :) Though I do sympathize with your disdain for emos. I don't care for them myslef seeing as that most of the people in my area dress emo-esque.
One thing I like about it all Goth is the one lable where someone can be dress like its 1837 or someone can be dressed like its year 3010 in a post nuclear society. There is just so much art and beauty and free-ness but with Emo they all look the same the guys look like girls and the girls look like 11 year old boys in a tun of colors and makeup.
RLY emo started in the mid 80s i always thought more like 2003-4. Well id personaly say emo is just a fad for kids i have never seen a 20 yearold+ emo and goth has so many more layers to it and subgroups brakeing off of its self. but with emo its only emo or scean. and goth has so much more cyper goth victorean 80s goth modern goth and then people have there own mix of all of those too well im jsut saying emo has no depth and its just conformity in a black mask
i dont know if this is correct but emo= looks, goths= looks & emotional i know few or maybe non emo i think that is only a visual style nothing else nothing more.
If this is a competition: Goths win. More style, more sexieness, more culture. I also think that male Goths look much better than male Emos. Emo girls are in my opinion equal to Goth Ladies in therms of sexiness.
Reminds me of the hilarious Southpark episode where the Goths are mistaken as Emos all the time xD
When people trash other it is often a defense mechanism used to mask their own feelings of low self-esteem or inadequacy. The irony is that most emo haters are as whiney and annoying as the so-called “emos” that they put down.
In reality most people who wear clothing and listen to music that is commonly associated with the term “emo” simply do so because it makes them feel good. (Not because they’re wanabee-depressed or “emotional”)
@missVAMPIREgirl62 Well I will admit, I am no fan of the emo genre of music or fashion. But I don't go around bashing them and starting silly emo witch hunts. While most of the young adults and teens in my area dress very emo, only a small number of them actually look emo, while the rest look more like what I would describes as "emo without the angst", they clothing styles that fit very well into the emo scene, but the color scheme does not.
@Jakegothicsnake today emos dont listen to REAL emocore and screamo , bands like Alesana and Escape the fate are way far from being screamo , mcr and fob arent emocore , now our so called screamo is better than your's and some people predict an Adult Emo Movement this decade
@Standoman6546 search it and you'll see a video or two on youtube , and it's okay , it's not the poser thing , not the crying for no reason in the public to get attention and sympathy , I mean the real thing : true feelings sad characteristic clumsy good looking clothes like emos in 80's and it has some goth in it , I guess they cut too
@Garrettproduction12 Dahvie vanity’s style seems to be heavily influenced by cyber and industrial esthetics. Emos: A tacky, unfashionable trend.
Goth: A fashionably varied lifestyle.
