Oh, a lot of conductors who come off as madmen are actually quite good at coaxing the desired results from their orchestras. Case in point: check out Mr. Ton Koopman.

@MyMusic0201 : You're right - he knows a lot more about emotion than he does technique. In something like the finale of Mahler's first, he'd have thee strokes and a coronary simultaneously.

It is pretty common for conductors to come off as mental pasients. They try to remind the musicians of the moods in the music with their facial expressions. It works, but i have to agree. Less really is more sometimes.

One time at choir rehersal, we were rolling on the floor laughing. Our conductor threw us out. lol

yes they do try to remind the musicians of the moods in the music with facial expressions but i don't seem to be able to fit his facial expressions in any sort of music, not even bad black metal.

Also, I had a shock when I first seen this recording, I thought it's the concert hall where I work :)
