Makarov was told to deliberately limit the capacity for collateral damage by making his round short range. Once you exceed 40 yards the round drops fast. Up to that point its deadly accurate. You have to remember the Tokarev which was used before the Makarov was extremely powerful thus the russian specs for a dummied down effective range. The russians foresaw the future of warfare becoming increasingly urbanized a long time ago. This is why Makarovs were short range and only 8 round cap.
@AmericanGunsmith Yeah, that makes a little more sense, but I'd call that low QUALITY not low RELIABILITY. Thanks for the interesting video anyway. =)
The local gun shop had 3 of these in what I saw as experienced condition, but wanted $ 300 each. On-line they are $ 200-285 pristine. There is very little profit margin in them, but get one pristine and you'll not be disappointed with the purchase. I want to get a Bulgarian or another Russian and have 2 of them. I don't think gun shops like them because there's more money to be made off more expensive guns. I tried to get them to do a FFL on-line purchase/transfer. Wasn't enough profit for them.
Makarov made for .380 ACP is far better and more reliable than Makarov with it's original 9x18M because the 9x18M is too high powered ammunition for that lousy copy of Walther PP or PPK (?)
The 9x18M fits perfectly to Stechkin full auto pistol.
The Makarov was not made for .380 ACP=9x17. It was made for 9,2x18 and that is different cartidge. It is very risky to use ammo not made for your weapon.
The Makarov is actually made in both cartridges. I don't mean at same time ofcourse, some are chambered for .380 and more for 9x18. To convert one to the other is just a barrel change to the appropriate barrel. The ones made in factory for .380 have the slide labeled thus.
Accuracy suffers??? Explain, then how I consistantly shoot the center out of targets with my Bulgarian Makarov... If I ever experience an accuracy problem, it's because of operator error. If I do my part, the pistol does it's part in excellence.
@IndianaJesusfreak True, I would compare a Makarov's reliability to a Glock. The Makarov doesn't fire the more effective 9x19 catridge, nor does it hold as many rounds. The ergonomics of the Makarov are not as good as a Glock I'd say.
So you can use .380 in a Mak? I've heard this causes serious key holing issues past a certain range. Are there any Mak variants chambered for 9x19? That would be ideal.
@J1Z06 thats not what hes talking about. The manufacturing processes and componets are not always uniform. So, Soviet designs were build with very large tolerances in mind, the weapons themselves are reliable but many times at the cost of accuracy. Thats what he means by that.
It is all good..and we all like to keep our guns, right? Join the NRA-ILA, JPFO, GOA etc so we can keep them. The UN is constantly bragging that of all the gun owners in America, only 4 million share the views of the "radical-extreme-NRA" Prove them wrong. We MUSt stick together and support our pro gun groups or we will have to turn in all of our guns and will then lose our other Constitutional freedoms as well. Watch: The Obama Deception, and Naomi Wolf: Give Me Liberty
Makarov is not very acurate :) Actually it is very cheap here and the ammo too. You should see the faces of the shooters when firing with it hahaha. And it is not so much reliable. Recently I had a misfire when it extracted the shell and began to extract the next cartridge but cant. So the cartridge was wedge in by the block. Very funny. It took me about 20 seconds to remove it. If the extract hole was bigger that wouldnt happen...
@antonarset Not accurate? So long as the barrel and crown is in good shape, the thing's gonna drive tacks. It's a fixed barrel. It's inherently more accurate that any other design...
I think you should contact the russian manufacturer and let them know about your terrific discovery which will revolutionize the makarov's reliability by an enlarged ejection port.
i think what he means by russia lacks "reliable quality" is their manufacturing inconsistency. they make up for this by having very loose tolerances in their weapons. this makes them reliable but more inacurate. although the makarov seems to be an exception because i have heard it is very acurate.
anyone need a really good holster for your makarov got to FALCO HOLSTER on line. they are great!

@AmericanGunsmith We have precision weapons. The real weapons of mass should be simple and reliable than your weapon does not have

Makarovs are made in both 9x18 and .380. Most of the .380 ones you will find are Russian manufacture.

You shoudl do some research. Some Makarovs were sold in .380 and there are many conversion kits on the market.

its true of the assault rifles, kaloshnikov didn't originally manufacture the makarov pistol.

Russian guns aren't reliable? Put down the crack pipe! The Makarov AND The AK can be dunked in mud, take it out and it'll fire all day!
I have this video on dvd...along with another regarding the 1911.
