Do people just cruise YT disliking every video they can watch? For the fun of hurting someone's feelings? Because I can't think of another reason why this one was disliked.
I saw Georg Solti conduct this at the penultimate night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in the early 1980s. It was the most fantastic live performance I have ever been to. I had tears streaming down my face and I looked round, and so did everybody else. Bravo Beethoven and thank you!
@gmh952 + @richstout :The orchestra is not playing with anymore 'passion' than the singers are singing with. This isn't a musical. Bernstein is THE source when it comes to bringing music to life. If they chorus was meant to be more animated, the would have been. And if they didn't do what Bernstein wanted, they would have been shot. Or fired. Or both.

try listening to the Gloria from Hummel's Missa Solemnis (also on youtube) then this. the contrast between mediocrity and genius could not be more extreme
Orchestra plays with energy, passion, fire, and brilliance, the chorus, on the other hand is so pedestrian and boring. Such a shame, it makes for a very uneven performance.
@gmh952 Well, my apologies, then, 'cause I've never tried to sing it. I just respectfully disagree. They didn't look terribly animated to me, but for a smallish-looking number of singers, I thought they did a very creditable job and sounded good. Whose performance (choir-wise) do you like, then? Curious.
I had the opportunity to sing Ludwig von Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in its entirety, Bass Baritone member of a Chorus who performed in what was called the Schubert theater, now the Merrium Theater, in Philadelphia, PA. The experience, including the rehearsals, and the concert before a theater audience with a life, full orchestra was awe inspiring, and exciting! I've always preferred Beethoven's 9th Symphony's "Ode to Joy," as wells "Gloria" from Missa Solemnis, over Handel's Messiah.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will. We praise You, we bless You, we adore You, we glorify You, we give thanks to You for Your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God the Father. Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, who taketh away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us. You who take away the sins of the world, hear our prayers. Who sits at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us.
Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis; qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis.
Past 50, Beethoven found himself deaf, eluded by true love, rejected by the nephew for whom he had assumed a paternal role, plagued by myriad illness. And yet, at that point in his life, the composer wrote on the score of his Missa Solemnis, "to my God, who has never deserted me."
2nd part of this masterpiece, the gloria, crossed from beginning to end by a jubilee shouting, the genius started working on his mass with high passion but suddenly was filled with big uncertainties, long live ludwig van
Viva Beethoven!
never hv i heard such music in my life and never will i.....and even if i do, it wldnt b from someone who was deaf and still cld write an EXTREMELY AWESOME piece of music. so solemn and so powerful!!!
Sexy conductor and sexy soprano and this great Hanna Schwarz ---Great times of german opera and concert after the war! La Moser is unique like every time
It is so sad to think that some people believe that God had an influence in this. Beethoven was a humanist and to consider God is to remove this humanity. Unless you are an Evangelist, haha! " Without religion there would be good people doing good things, and bad people doing bad things. But for good people to do bad things it takes religion (Professor Wineburg)!"
Beethoven wasn't a humanist he was a palladian-he saw God as a creative being in everything. He never attended Church true, but he did look to the Ancient Church for inspiration in composing the Creed and Agnus Dei. The Gloria is him giving glory to the ultimate creative being, not necessarily the Christian God.
It is not Requiem Mass (which is a mass for the dead), this is the standard Catholic Mass, with the texts that are sung or spoken every Sunday during the services. "Gloria" being the second part, in which God and Jesus are glorified.
God has nothing to do with this! This is pure human excellence at its most triumph. Beethoven is to me the greatest human ever to exist!!! End of sentence!
Astounding, even if the recording sounds like it looks (you must admit this is old) the music still sounds as terrific, awesome, earthshaking. The magnitude of praise, a humbling experience indeed.
I so clearly remember Bernstein opening Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center in 1962 with this movement of the Missa Solemnis! I was 21 at the time, but it one of those singular occasions which made such and indelible imression, that even 45 years later the memory of it inspires me still.
I like Bernstein's interpretations of Beethoven the most. The are more about the wall of sound that Karajan, in my opinion, and I like that.

Unfortunately you're right...
too many chorus singers wouldn't have a CLUE
as to how to F-E-E-L the music and ENJOY it.
I'm envious of you, as you've thus gotten to do this GREAT Work...
one beautiful passage after another.
Maybe showing / teaching people how to FEEL the music
is tough, perhaps impossible.
What's your opinion?!?

Gloria In Excelsis Deo - Latin for "Glory to God in the Highest".
You can probably buy a vocal score of this with the english written in italics underneath the latin.

Lovely music, but the conductor is a bloody show-off. Look at Furtwangler, he certainly knows how to impress with the music og not with his gestures

@owelsford Nope, it proves the existence of human kind. Man has no need for a deity to write this, inspiration is still distilled by human endeavour.
