I just heard this song randomly and I'm so glad I did, the instrumental is fabulous and the song just hits you!! I'm in my 20's and too young to have embraced it in its time but fortunately to me it is timeless and will stick with me forever!!
The version on the "Lifelines" albums has an extra verse. I grew up listening to that one and didn't hear the original til a few years ago. I prefer the longer one. Regardless, this is, I believe, one of the most powerful songs ever written.
Thanks so much for posting this! This song plays a key role in one of Spider Robinson's best short stories, "The Magnificent Conspiracy". I hadn't heard this PP&M song before, so I was glad to be able to find it here. Find the story if you can and read it, it is excellent.
If you are not part of the ruling class of any society during their battle times you become either "cannon fodder" or cowards and that has been going on for ten thousand years
This song has reverberated in my heart, soul, and mind ever since I first heard it back in the sixties. Haunting is a good word to describe it. It's hard because I have many courageous friends and relatives who have fought in every war - they were risking everything for their country. The best of the best. Yet, killing is wrong. I want to believe that peace is possible without killing. Yet, this world is so broken.
The battles ahead of us are inner ones that involve great scruteny. Weed Out Hate is an inititative that can give peace a chance by asking each of us to take responsibiliity to symbolically remove our inner weeds, so that that humandkind can begin to perceive the possibilities of the future. The moral dilemmas that peace activists of the 60s faced, begin to resolve themselves once you begin to implode the desire to hate others into the noble intention of symbolically rooting out hatred itself.
Ecc 3:22 So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his heritage. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?
Ecc 3:19 For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity.
Ecc 3:20 All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust.
Ecc 3:21 Who knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth?
Ecc 3:14 I know that whatever God does, It shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, And nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him.
Ecc 3:15 That which is has already been, And what is to be has already been; And God requires an account of what is past.
Ecc 3:16 Moreover I saw under the sun: In the place of judgment, Wickedness was there; And in the place of righteousness, Iniquity was there.
Ecc 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.
Ecc 3:12 I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives,
Ecc 3:13 and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.
I originally heard this song as the flip side of the vinyl 45 of "I dig Rock and Roll Music". Boy, you couldn't find two more different kinds of songs than these. A very powerful and moving (sad) song.
This was one of the most gut ripping songs of the Vietnam era. I was past it and had been discharged in 1962, unlikely to be called back. But I felt this war deeply and had many friends die in it. I still think of this song and I am seventy now. Everyone should listen to this and think. Yes, use your brains and think. THINK
@Scout4Me1, on the original "Album 1700" it was indeed spelled that way, but on their official site now it's spelled both ways, depending on the link depth. Maybe the site creator got confused, also. "Mandala" seems to be most consistent with the "wheel of life" concept.
@RURALWARROOM Nelson Mandela (one L). The Mandala is indeed the original translated word from sanscrit. Mandella is Native American associated with dream-catchers. The original album did use the incorrect spelling of Mandala, although it was common to use the mis-spelled version at the time, and was perpetuated by the confused association with Nelson Mandela and his cause.
This may be the most beautiful anti war song ever. So many lives wasted and some are still dying of agent orange. What horrible leaders we have sometimes. I hope there is a god so they will burn forever. Johnson and Bush, one Rep. and one Dem.
Scout .. i was just reading thru the comments here and saw your note that you had to fight to be able to keep this song here ... good for you!!!! I'm so glad you were successful!!!! Thank you.
My mom has been bugging me to check this song out for the longest time....im glad I finally did, its such a sweet melody but the lyrics are so stricking, why we don't have mainstream artists like this from my generation I don't know, but it's too bad
This is a song that has always filled me with tears of rage and despair for humanity. How noble those are who sacrifice themselves to our ignorance, but how damned little we seem to deserve them. Samm
this song and scary and reminds me off all the stories in mythology all the kings trying to outsmart some god and that god turns the people on the king and starts a new age love it so classic
thank you so much. i have always loved this this song. i am 60 and was of draft age during vietnam. that madness continues today. the only reason the youth of today are relatively silent is that there is no draft. if you are interested in a beautiful, powerful song that brings together the vietnam/iraq "experience" look up "deja vu all over again" by legendary vietnam era songwriter john fogerty!! very powerful song.
thanks for posting, saw them sing this at the milwaukee arena back in 1968, had all of their albums. there was always something so powerful about this song.
i remember the first time i heard this song and how moving it was for me. it was during the vietnam war and i was called to go for my physical for the army. this song was very powerful in capturing the struggle that almost tore this country apart. it remains a great piece of music. big ups to those who resisted the war and folks like PP&M, joan baez and many others for speaking out.
Amazing. It almost puts me in tears and makes me think of the stories I've heard about Vietnam. But it's just a never ending cycle. A cycle of war. But people like this, they want it to end and they reflect on it in one of the most meaningful ways, Through music. And coming from a 13 year old, I seriously think so many others would like it all to stop too. Thanks so much for posting and let the music stay in our hearts ♥
You are very thoughtful for a someone so young. Yes, music is universal and can be appreciated without having to understand each other`s language. Unfortunetly there is more hate in the world than ever before and we are helpless to stop it. Take care and have a nice Christmas!
We should send this to Obama. Will they ever listen. If we do not learn to live in peace these are lessons that are never going to be heard and we are all doomed as well as our children and grandchildren.
@Scout4Me1 I don't think he wrote this for pacifists. I think he wrote this for humans and any human should listen to it and learn from it. War is Hell, and wars built on lies are the worst form of Hell. Johnson lied about the Gulf of Tonkin and George Bush lied about weapons of mass distraction. One a demoncrat and one a repugnican, but kids and youngsters died. So many, so sad.
I cannot believe you tube would try to censor this song! What was there excuse for trying to keep this song out? This song is as relevant today as it was when it was recorded.....probably even more so since the war mongers still haven't learned anything new except to build bigger bombs....Thanks for putting this up and for fighting the good fight.
No censor from YouTube. They just told me I violated copyrights and they muted my video. I filled out the dispute form and they had to let it in under the "Fair Use" law.
@girardey1 This song is a part of history!! Whatever someone's opinion...songs like this HAVE to be allowed for every reason that America is America!!!
