Rock music as we know it began with the Beatles. Their music wasn't that simple as you state and they were very good musicians. Paul was a great bass player and George was a great guitar player. They belong at number 1, Zeppelin 2, Pink Floyd 3, etc...I love Rush but really wouldn't put them in the top 10, maybe next 10

Unlike most people on here, i'm not going to pick you apart. I for one think this is a realy good list. I disagreed with The Beatles being number 15 but you have given very strong points for that, which I now agree with. Nice to see them not in #1 spot for a change.. it's as if people do it mindlessly.

fuck yes, I think despite their great songwriting ability, they don't have great instrument playing capability. it was all songwriting and then just some of the most basic music writing ever made. Take Zeppelin or Pink Floyd. They were also great songwriters and they could also play their instruments very well. even Rush, defintely not the best songwriters, but they could sure play the hell out of their instruments. And thats why those bands are popular among people along with the Beatles.

Anyone can shred a guitar or pull of a dozen chops on the drums, but without their songwriting ability, they'll just be thrown into the already overcrowded pile of fancy instrumentalists. And do not discredit The Beatles, though the music they play sounds simple, they are very good instrumentalists. George Harrison is one helluva guitarist, while many great drummers look up to Ringo Starr.
