When i was a child my dad was a rag and bone man, one day he bought home a stuffed mooses head, my mum dint like it so they told me to take it to a shop on the corner from where we lived, they sold junk and antiques, they would not give me any money for it but offered me an old record player with lots of records, i remember only playing 2 of them, Jezebel and Rose Rose i love you, i dint realise it till i clicked your post that they were A and B sides as id forgot, i am 63 thanks for memories.
There are many "original" versions of this song, but as far as I'm concerned, this is THE version. Frankie Laine absolutely made this song, and I remember it well in my childhood.
When I think of the songs on the popular charts 60 years ago and some of what we have to listen to today - well, they just don't make them any more like they used to.
@alger3041 Yes, it's sad what todays kids call music. But there is hope I get many emails from young people today telling me how much they love the music of the past and asking why they can't have this type of music.
I love this music, and (most of) the remarks. Do you happen to be familiar with 'Chinky Butterfly'....it was on an old 78 record I listened to as a kid. I also remember Doris Day's 'Put 'em In a Box and Tie 'em With a Ribbon' about that time. (I thought she sang off-key on that.)
@lokotasioux No, I have never heard of the song "Chinky Butterfly" and I looked through several of my referance book and could find nothing on it. If it was out at the same time as Doris's "Put'em In A Box" that would be about 1948 Frankie Laine recorded that song also but was not as good as Day's
I was stationed in Japan '51 - '53 and it played constantly, even in the bars in town. And besides that my room mate had the record with "Jezebel" on the flip side.
Ahh...brings back old memories...staying in Malaysia all my life...even if I am thirteen, I still remember when I was young it would be played all day on the tape recorder and we would all dance to the song...even heard this song sung at Chinese weddings...old memories brought back...I would rather stay in those times where songs like these were played...
When I was a child, rumaging through a box of 78 RPM records, I ran across a Columbia red label 78, with Rose Rose I Love You on one side and Jezebel on the other. I played both sides and played it over and over. I was maybe 5 years old. I can remember those songs to this day and the joy it brought. That was in the 60's. I really cherish this music. I met Frankie Lane in the 80's through a friend at a party. Much older of course. What a class act and a humble gentleman he was.
This song was written by a Chinese in 1940. The lyrics praise rose for its thorny beauty in summer and its tenacity through thunderstorms. The English lyrics are very different: they are about a charming Oriental girl named Rose. Note “make way, make way” sound like “玫瑰, 玫瑰” in Chinese which exactly mean “Rose, Rose”. If using those words is by chance, it would be a very interesting coincidence! While the original was sung by a female, this version is beautifully presented by a male voice. A+
I first heard this song when I was a sophompre in high school. I was waiting for a bus after school and this song was coming from an outside speaker in a restaurant. I've been a Frankie Laine fan ever since. Thanks for posting!
@felixbautista This song by Frankie was something that was very rare back then, it was a two sided hit. "Rose" charted #3 and on the on the flip side was the great song
"Jezebel" which charted #2. Not many singers ever had a record like that.
@anthonyhollis1 In 1964 Frankie was leaveing Columbia and Capitol Records was doing everything they could to get him to sign with them. He had several offerd with most of the big companys but he signed with Capitol. I don't think the ink was dry on the paper when the exec's at Capitol was chasing after these four kids from England and completly forgot about Frankie. What were their names, Oh yes "The Beatles". No wonder he left after 3 yrs and started making hits again at
@anthonyhollis1 I wasn't there when you took Berlin, but I was there 17 years later when they built a Wall around it and my wife lived right accross the street from that ugly wall.
my grandad sang this.Hes been gone 22 years now.

@obnubilate The English version of the song is about a girl he met who worked in a cabaret, and later fell in love with.

@obnubilate isn't that the whole point of the song?

I don't think anyone gets the true meaning of this song. The tune may be catchy but there is more than this that meets the eye or in this case ear

This song was written about a Cabaret Queen from Malaya(0:24) named Rose Chan.
Malaya is now known as Malaysia.
Everybody seems to have a story to tell about Rose.

The English version maybe- but it started out as a 30's Shanghai song called "Mei Kwei". There's a copy of the original somewhere on Youtube.

What the reference for the picture of the Japanese girl at 0.16? Its eerily similar to another one I found a while back.

@EireGoon
The pictures are just ones I found on the internet that I thought fitted the song.
