I understand your comment about people's self esteem and it seems almost honorable for designers to work towards but really... if a person's self esteem is raised by their fashion, then it's a false sense of worth, based on others and not themselves.

I agree that it does sometime contribute to anorexia & bulimia, but I also think that there is beauty to it. It is hard to create clothing that have meaning and aesthetic appeal. I went to design school (not for fashion) and I knew fashion/textiles designers and it is seen as a form of art that you wear. It also gives people confidence and allows people (both the designer, the wearer, the industry) to express themselves. I don't think you should knock just because you don't understand it.

The reason I knock the industry isn't because I don't understand it, because I do. I worked in a related industry (Hollywood entertainment) and dislike the industry because of the level of importance it places on itself and those who do - and don't - wear their fashions.

If people want to create nice clothes everyone can wear, I'm all for it. But when the label, designer, attitude and price become all important factors, it crosses the line into absurdity.
