For medical reasons, I have been unable to go on retreats and remove myself from the objects of attachment. It takes a lot of work and skill to be around those objects and not get sucked in...on the other hand, it's a very powerful practice too, in my own experience. That is not to diminish the great value of monasticism and retreats at all.
