The thing I like about scientists like Sagan and Feynman is that they admit that they aren't 100% certain. This is what makes science the ideal system.
Just a reminder to anyone who watches this and excitedly entertains the idea of aliens having visited us; just remember that the likelihood of other life in the universe is almost certain.
The likelihood of them being any more intelligent (in terms of our understanding of intelligence), however, is an entirely different story. There are probably 'living', moving organisms somewhere else in the universe.
I once said this to a Christian... his reply: "Its hard to find planets that have oxygen on them, and exact climates as our." And I said, "Thats if you assume that they're humans, or that whatever they may be even breathes oxygen. Maybe they breath nitrogen." His response. "... *walks away*". Logic, defeating Religion since... forever.
@carlybea Yes they are. Science is a specific methodology based on observation and gathering empirical evidence, in order to support conclusions and gain knowledge about the natural world.
"Natural" world here being the key word. Religion relies entirely on a fundamentally supernatural principle (God).
Anything that is based on the supernatural is not scientific; ghosts, vampires, zombies, astrology, psychics, and religion, are all examples of the supernatural (aka bullshit).
@carlybea The very meaning of the world supernatural essentially means that which lies outside of the natural world, meaning everything we can't see, hear, touch, observe, experiment on, etc.
For most scientific philosophers, the supernatural is basically a nice way of saying that which does not exist. There's nothing stopping me from claiming invisible other-wordly elephants that can't be observed exist all around you at all times. But it's bologna.
@xDuBx420x Who is to say that people who believe in God haven't made observations and gathered evidence of their own. You're speaking from your own point of view or lack thereof. So basically you're forming your own conclusions and stating them as fact. Seems to me like you're portraying one of the very things you're against. Everyone will believe what they want, however I'm not arrogant or ignorant enough to call what someone else believes "bullshit" based on my own personal beliefs.
One day we will look back on ourselfs and think how stupid we really were, just as we do now over the fact that we once thought the earth was flat, or how we thought that our star revolved around our planet. Life is everywhere, all bet that we are an extremely advanced form of it, but i guarantee you, peppered across our galaxy, life triumphs. My only regret is that I wont be around the witness the day we realise it.
I do solemnly swear the following to be true. When I asked Jesus Christ to be my Lord and forgive me of my sins, I was in an instant changed forever. The true Christian legacy is one of monumental courage, unwavering faith, humble sacrifice and joyful hope.
God knows you, God loves you and God has a plan for your life that is good. Feel free to message me if you have questions.
Yeah the possibility of aliens (intelligent life) existing somewhere out there is 100% in my eyes, the chances of them either have or will visit earth 0.0000000000000000000001%.
@SaganAppreciationSoc Thanks !! I meant to say about celebrating Sagan's Diamond Jubilee (for the 75 years) and not his Silver one(25yrs) . Also, after a meeting with the Sagan calendar committee (me, myself and myself), as a calendar CEO chair I decide to change the name from 77 A..S.N to a simpler: 77 A.S. (Anno Saganum)
Videos like this remind me of how much I miss Carl Sagan; but perhaps more importantly, they remind me of how deeply grateful I am for his having lived to begin with.
You know how they've found and raised many incarnations of Dalai Lama etc.. Perhaps we should look into what it takes to raise another Sagan to find and raise a "reincarnate" of him. :P
Now if only the people of Gliese 581d would point their main radio antenna at Sol and broadcast some Gliesian music for a few weeks, we would know...in twenty years....but hey, we would know. :D
@padaii Unfortunately, the answer to your question is no, but he will live on in our hearts and minds, and the hearts and minds of generations to come.
@Antipopularization "My view is that if there is no evidence for it, then forget about it. An agnostic is somebody who doesn't believe in something until there is evidence for it, so I'm agnostic."
@w215philly He was like the Agnostic Jesus, to be more precise. Because, he was an Agnostic, not an Atheist. Just saying. But I know what you mean, and I do miss him too!
