They sing the ending of the Saga of King Olaf. You can read the poet Longfellow's version online. There are 22 parts. Search Longfellow Saga of King Olaf.
Ormurin Langi takes its subject matter from the account well given in Heimskringla of the famous sea battle off the island of Svolder in 1000, when the Swedish and Danish kings, together with the Norwegian Eiríkr Hákonarson, attacked the Norwegian king, Olaf Tryggvason, while he was on his way home from Wendland to Norway on his ship, the Long Serpent, accompanied by his fleet.
Milen, I raise the glass to to union with you new found wife. Remember to hold you sword high friend and live a happy life, die and make it to where you going...
@skinsvideos21 Doubt it. They preferred lyres, flutes, drums and they didn't use end-rhyme until at least the late Viking Age (and then only rarely) preferring alliteration. The idea of a chorus would have been completely alien to them too. They'd probably just perceive it as foreign and bizarre music, just as most people today would view theirs.
Oh yeah just love this song..... i dont know why but every time i hear it makes me proud of my ancestors....... on father side descendant of Haraldr hárfagri (Norwegian) and on mother well...... native american indian (Iroquois).... i know its strange but thats it...... anyway im proud of my ancestors belief which are also mine.... Hold the heathen hammer high brothers of the north
Hail from Heimdall Living in Canada..... PS Heimdall is my real name not joking around ASATRU I am Till I Die
What the hell! I just clicked one of the related videos, National Anthem of Faroe Islands and it has been blocked because of copyright! WHAT THE FUCK!!
@beinta86 they reprecent the last remain of the originale norwegian culture .. we have given up all ,just to please the muslems ....... even our god -
@wiking60 technically, it was the christians, not the muslims. And the norse did it willingly because the christians were giving out free hairbands for women upon conversion to the christian faith. Judging by your anglicized "viking" with a W, I'd say you've done quite a bit of conversion yourself. All hail the norse Gods! Abandoned for hairbands!
it doesnt just mean the long serpent. It means THE Long Serpent, the legendary largest viking ship of all time and the crown ship of the greatest viking of all time, the king of Norway, Olav Trygvasson!!
@KillerBunny47, It sure was. Well... I just googled it and found out that way but... There are enough similarities in it to swedish so, if I'd have though about it for a while, I could have guessed it... Ormirin Langi / Den Långa Ormen (swe) / The Long Snake/Serpent.
@TheDraconicVisage Either you're lying about being Faroese or the Faroese grammar system has really degenerated since the last tiem I check. In Icelandic it would be "við viljum hafa meira", in Faroese it SHOULD be "vit viljum hava meira" and in Old Norse it would be "vit viljum hafa meira".
@Einarr1989 get that stick out of your ass. SHOULD BE?! you don't know squat about how languages evolve, and don't you pretend to know shit about Faroese which you don't.
@aGeilini So it has changed? Shit, that's a shame. I have a Faroese-Icelandic dictionary but it's really old; it was really close to Icelandic - you guys must have fucked it up in the past 100 years or so.
@Einarr1989 yeah it changed, some 4-3 hundred years ago. when it stopped being the norm in the language. but that ain't saying that viljum, latum, trøðum, stígum, and many other plural-verbs aren't in the Faroese language, they just are in nether the standard spoken- or written language and haven't been for centuries now. Any complete Faroese dictionary would contain word forms such as "viljum" 'cause they are still much in use, in epic poetry and proverbs to this day.
I always thought I didn't like this song at all, that only their heavier songs were okay, but I was terribly wrong! The more I listen to it, the better it gets somehow :)
