Karl gets his life energy from where lives, and since he's off his world, he doesn't have a constant energy source. the more he fights, the more energy he uses up and when he completely runs out of energy, he will die. the pauses is just one of the symptoms he has while he is low on energy.

You know how he says "I work in an amusement park?" In that amusement park is an entity known as Castle, which gives him his energy. Without that connection, he has a limited amount, and so he has to use his energy wisely, or else he'll freeze up.

The irony of it all is he never uses his energy wisely, as demonstrated here. When he says "It shouldn't be that fast," he most likely means "I shouldn't lose energy that fast."
