I kinda think that the Cassowary's feathers look more like what I would imagine the primitive feathers would look like on a dinosaur. I think those feathers came first and then fused into flight feathers. Which would mean that the Cassowary is more primitive than a flight bird and never needed to fly ever at all, not loosing it's ability to fly. I mean it never even got rid of it's last dino-finger and the efficient breathing was already in dinos. Yet that's just my own speculation. :/
