Rome gets kicked out the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 3 or 4 games for a hit about .9 seconds after the pass whereas players like Tootoo do it 2 seconds or so after and are not penalized. From what I've read it seems the NHL makes the rules as it sees fit which doesn't seem like a very good policy.

It's a clean hit in the sense that he didn't shoot any elbows or crosscheck him. The point is it was only a good hit if the man HAD THE PUCK, which he DIDN'T. Hejda got rid of the puck a long time before Tootoo hit him, Tootoo had the opportunity to stop. He should have gotten the shit beaten out of him for it.
This is a dirty hit. If he was just finishing his check, there might be an argument. But Tootoo tries to stop the pass from Hejda with his stick and then decides he's going to hit him. It was a cheap shot.

theres nothing wrong with that hit at all. you generally have 3 seconds after the pucks given way to finish your check. cdbear is right. hejda was doing what so many coaches have said not to do, dont admire your pass. he got caught making a bad decision. leave it up to the biased columbus announcers that have never played hockey to call it a cheapshot

the rule actually is a sticks length plus one stride... and the nhl has it down to a science, they review every supposed "late hit" and if it happens before 17 frames after the guy has gotten rid of the puck, it is not deemed late. finished his check. good play.
