Fun fact: Kristy McNichol was nominated in 1983 for a Razzie Award, for "The Pirate Movie" but happy to report she actually won one in 1989 for Two Moon Junction
Remembering seeing this film as a youth and thinking it was pretty lame. It had a lame script, lame jokes, lame songs, I remember thinking, I'm sure the original operetta it was based on had to be a lot better than this mess! That said, in retrospect it does have some kitsch appeal.
Some Australian studio slapped this crud together, hoping to steal some thunder from the upcoming "Pirates Of Penzance" movie,a theatrical version of the then-popular Broadway show starring Rex Smith and Linda Ronstadt---which wasn't a hit,either---but at least it wasn't THIS overblown bastardization of Gilbert and Sullivan!
man I remember this movie from when I was a kid, but must of blocked out all the singing, only thing I really remember was the leap year birthdate so he was only 5
Me extraña que no fuera un exito en su epoca, era muy divertida, mejor que muchas de las llamadas exitosas, se me hace que no supieron promocionarla, en verdad es muy divertida, si pueden verla haganlo.
This movie does Gilbert and Sullivan injustice. Also there is another movie with that song (0:11 - 0:16). It's called The Pirates of Penzance and it's a much better adaptation of the G&S operetta.
I introduced this movie to my younger cousins. They LOVED it and I still watch it with them sometimes (I had them watch it just a few years ago since they are pretty young ages 8 to 15)
It grows on you. I had to watch this two or three times to get the jokes I had missed.
(its those double meanings)
Voted 6th worst pirate movie ever made -- but I am in complete disagreement with that. And the fact that it is much more popular nowadays than when it was released seems to bear me out.
I was in kindergarten when I watched this movie, seems so different 26 years later. That takes me back. Now im off to find "Attack of the killer tomatoes", and "Saturday the 14th".
I have loved this movie since i first seen it as a kid and still love it 20 some years later. Coming from a straight guy this is surprising I know. LOL!
this is the best movie and has been for me for along time. F the people that don't love this fun, silly movie. Life is too damn short to have too serious a life.
"Original" ? This crap has just stolen The Pirates of Penzance, stuck in loads of crap American humour, lyric changes and some crappy 80s pop songs... how is that original?

I didn't know Bialystock and Bloom produced movies.
I have a feeling even Joel and the 'bots couldn't make this watchable.

@snarkus63 I didn't even know hat existed! I'd only ever seen it as a live Operetta. I'm going to try and rent them both!

The version with Kevin Kline as the Pirate King is much better than this.

Attention all pirate movie fans!
How about a pirate movie in the tradition of Treasure Island, Cutthroat Island, and Pirates of the Caribbean? What do you think of that?

This blows away most other pirate films save for Blackbeard's Ghost and Nate and Hayes. Plus, the songs are great!
