  • If you think technique practice is the answer and the first time someone threatens you, you go to pieces then your stuffed.. If you do respond (some people won't) it will either work or not..If the art is not part of you...and its not an automatic (known as no mind) reaction you will lose..

Aikido refers to this as No Ki <<streetfighter calls it (no bottle). Martial arts can make you brave...the trouble is have you learned correctly because you won't get a second chance..

  • Just a point of view...The martial art is not important, Its the journey....sounds rubbish..

In the end from a defence point of view its a state of mind who ever is best at their art will win (Thats any art) that includes a street fighter..they have their own techniques...

  • From what I've seen, the aikido being watered down has been mainly in the United States. Take Aikikai for instance, I have never found an aikikai school that trains to perfection like they do in Japan. Is this school one of them? I ask that because most schools pass people even when they've failed their exams. Thanks.

  • Huffman Sensei....

It is rather amusing to see your performance 20 years ago....

It is equally delightfull to watch your more recent pictures...

I maintain that Aikido becomes Real after about 20 years of practice...

    Thank You...

  • I've been practicing Aikido for 20+ years and I'm about to say something I will surely hear from and get a lot of flack, but the ranking system of Aikido has no purpose!

I know lots of people whom tested and received high ranks, did well on testing, but when it comes down to technique, execution and knowing the real spirit of Aikido,

they don't have a clue. I've watched many videos on utube wondering "what are these people doing"? Continued.....

  • Thank you for posting this. I have practiced hard with friends to be ready for my 4th kyu keeping in mind that I may not know everything yet. Seeing your test will definitely help me understand better my own mistakes. The difference between 4th kyu and shodan test may make you smile but you're the only one humble enough to show your failure so you're the only one I can learn from to progress. Many post on there great technics to learn but nothing to understand and progress.

  • More practice!!!!

  • So what eventually made the difference between your pass and your fail?

  • thank you for posting this. You are testing here, I presume? It's helpful to see the comments on where nage went wrong. Also, it's very refreshing to see something other than a martial artist glorifying himself on youtube.

  • cudos for posting and evaluating this - it was really a strange kind of dance

  • And where's the three on one?

  • I think this was pretty poor. Bad posture, bad timing.

  • I have a question tangoch30.

Will Aikido work agenst someone trying to beat you upp? You know like big bullys in school.

  • Aikido could be used to defend against bullies provided you have learned some good quality Aikido. I also believe in what Gozo Shioda taught that 70% of what makes Aikido effective in real situations is atemi, strikes. It is quite probable that you will have to "warm them up" (slam them) with some serious punches or kicks or both before your technique results will be effective. Unfortunately much of the main line Aikido has been "watered down" to the point of ineffectiveness.

  • I dissagree. I work in Security and I use Aikido all the time. Strikes, or Atemi is useful, sure. =) But it is not necissary. As long as you have good concept of the basic Technics and how Aikido works, then you will be fine. I have never regretted studying Aikido.

  • @waiting4theWroms Really i finally found a guy that proves that aikido is ture in a real fight thanks!!

  • Yes it works very well thanks.

  • @chrstilen5 like that one guy said, but mostly no....im sorry but if you really want something to stand up to bullies is courage, and if that doesnt work...take a jiu jitsu or judo class...boxing too

  • @mrjaret67 yeah. Or I just point there eye ball out ^_^ and run for it hehe. No wait.. that be ^_

  • @chrstilen5

If you're interested in serious self defense, instead of taking Aikido, you should consider a martial art like Muay Thai.

  • @dubalrimaal Thanks I'll have a look ^_^

  • @chrstilen5 fuck no it's not going to help you, your going to get punched in the face and tapped out, Aikido is pretty little dance moves, that's about it

  • @chrstilen5 No chance ... sorry it is make believe

  • @siquan Then back too eye stabing jutsu lol^_^

  • I think that you have a great attitude when trying to bether yourself. You will go far.

  • I think when people see the videos, they don't read any of the entry comments which explain what is going on and when. This video is from 1992. Both the failed and the pass tests were within four months. I have been yondan for about 7 1/2 years now.

  • You are a good student. Acknowledging your mistakes will for sure help you passing your next test.

I want to start Aikido soon. But I'm doing Taekwondo at the moment. So I don't want to do to much at once. I'll start Aikido during my studies abroad.

  • Try to be more relaxed, your body was very-very rigid. Do more juwaza, it seems, that you know the techniques, but don't feel them.

  • Hi,

It appears that the test taker's foot movements and body positioning were a bit sloppy (no disrespect intended). A lot of "jerky" movements. The Uke had more control than the Nage. More than anything, this is probably because the Test taker/Nage was nervous...

  • Shodan is a very diffcult test, much harder than most shodan test in karate. The most important is paying attention to detail and "keeping your one point".

  • the test wasn't that bad. failing or passing an exam is also part of a test itself. what matters most is how we learn from our mistakes and rectify them with passion & dedication. i appreciate the video. it was a really a humbling experience. thanks for sharing this video. keep spreading the love of the 'way'...

  • I thank you for this, it will help me teaching my students.

  • I can see where you have failed this grading and thank you for having the courage to upload it! I watched the video where you passed as well and there is a difference.

  • yea i say somethings that never looked well but i say he did okay =) lol well better then me

ffs i forgot what is shodan i'm thinking the rank before black i forgot

  • Shodan is first black belt. This was the test for first black belt. The very beginning was not too bad. It fell apart later on. The comments on the screen tell you what was wrong.

  • Hi , im writing from Salta , Argentina . I didnt think it was that bad .But they must be very strict because I've seen even nidan's exams were they forget how to perform somenuchi ikkyo and sensei Katsutoshi Kurata told them to relax and eventually they passed the exam. thx for showing this video and your sincerity .

  • @tangoch30 well if you ask me its just a matter of finding a dedicated teacher that cares obout you and not your money and is good at it like mine(IM JUST SAYNG)
