I remember watching" She Loves You " and " I Want To Hold Your Hand "on the live broadcast when I was a couple weeks short of 6. It's great to be able to see it again !
I remember in 1964 I tuned in to the Ed Sullivan show to see Hollywood's exciting Mitzi Gaynor and there was this long haired group of guys who called themselves the Beatles and then ....well you know.... Mitzi and everyone else was just not so exciting anymore.
The Beatles are my musical parents and my biggest influence. Their intricate chord progressions and innovative arrangements aren't really shown until their later years, but this pop stuff really influences my pop stuff, as well. And i'm hoping some of you would be interested in giving some of my songs a shot(:
I only have two uploaded, but i'm looking for some feedback from the fanbase i wish to capture, because i know beatles fans are open-minded. Thank you for your little time (:
Live! And damn good. The amps are not much but they were tight due to lots of playing together. A bar band at heart and garage in the good sense. Could still do the ballads too.
@Lubbylove89 You being 22 if you are a male would give anything to be one of The Beatles and if you are female you would give anything to sleep with one The Beatles..
@romans52345 I'm 19 and male. I would give anything to be one of the Beatles. I'm also straight, but I would give anything to sleep with one of the Beatles.
I was 15yo.....it was a time of...........in-your-face old people...........the local five & dime was selling Beatles wigs for a dollar.......barbers were worried about their future.....the boring music of the American Top 40 was being turned upside-down....the incredible ride lasted until Lennon went goofy with Yoko and American rockers finally got the message and, except for disco, made the 70s & 80s even better.
I was 12 Years old when I watched this with my little sister, ( who was freaking out over Ringo) and our parents in Hialeah, Fl..........THESE BOYS WERE A BIG DEAL BACK THEN.....(bigger than Elvis, & the beginning of "the British Invasion").....they came out of no where and brought America out of our grief from the loss of JFK.
. @liddygirlnm- I’m not the consummate music instructor. Yet it has been talked about for years what Harrison showed in those middle bars in guitar chording of this number. Harrison's idol was Carl Perkins- See Blue Suede Shoes (that’s Rockabilly though, not jazz), see Larry Coryell plays “Julia La Belle”, George Benson, Charlie Byrd, Pat Metheny, Jerry Garcia, Leo Kottke, John Fahey, Charlie Christian, Les Paul, Tal Farlow, I personally like Joni Mitchell but more so Diana Krall on jazz piano
@tasracho are you talking about george harrison? of course his idol was carl perkins. as a matter of fact one of his many pseudonyms was carl harrison. another ones included: hari georgeson, l'angelo misterioso, george harrysong, and a bunch of other pseudonyms.
@liddygirlnm- I’m not a performing jazz guitar player but listened/learned to play some classical, blues, bossa nova. You’ll notice the most highly admired guitar players in music history books don’t play rock guitar. Rock simply borrows only a few major chords in short repetition. Even Hendrix, Clapton, etc. are classified blues. See Youtube vids for Django Reinhardt, John McLaghlin, Larry Corryell, a progression of jazz, early jazz fusion, even ambient. Also Harrison’s Sitar transcends all.
I was fortunate to attend the "Soundcheck" by Paul McCartney at the MGM in Las Vegas Concert in US Tour in 2005 and heard this same song in the voice of Paul. It was an incredible experience, although we were less than 40 the lucky ones to be there, in addition to its staff and the Arena. At 63 years, (then) sang it as if Paul was 20 years.I was in there at 20 feet away from Paul and still do not believe it!
That little blurb about John: "Sorry girls; he's married"
Reminded me of that scene in the movie That Thing You Do when The Wonders were on that live television show and when they got to the lead singer Jimmy the blurb said "Careful girls; he's engaged".
Those of us old enought to remember on this night (I was 9 1/2 and remember our parents happily instructing us to watch it- our mother was screaming for John) but watch at precisely at 3:54 ~ 4:09 (although he plays this style throughout the number' Till There Was You) what George does (guitar players with some ability know well) as he plays augmented jazz chords at age 19! This was an early sign that the Beatles were far advanced for their age as young musical artists.
@cosmiclight .. that is fascinating. Please tell a dummy like me what an augmented jazz chord is. i am trying to learn about all the ways that the Beatles were innovators and musical geniuses for their time.
I was listening to "A day in the life" at home one day. When the line"He blew his mind out in a car" was sung Dad said "he blew his mind?? You play that when I'm not here!! I did. A LOT!!
I have seen this opening a number of times. I still get goose bumps watching it. I was 7 then, so I was quite young. My sister, who was 15 at the time, told me she wanted to scream, but Mom(who laughed her head off at the Beatles haircuts) and Dad were in the room so she couldn't. My Dad hated them. Me? I think they are (by far) the best band in History!
..... I was 10 in '63 and my older sister was 12 and she got us so hyped up that when we saw this show.... no more 'Mitch Miller or Ray Conniff' we all (even my younger brother 'caught on') when he got older. My parents changed their entire concept of music. They didn't like the Animals, the stones, Led Zep, the Who but grew to love the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Association, Simon & Garfunkle, Peter, Paul and Mary..ect..... They were round 40 yrs old at the time.... Something else...Thanks!
Agree with all of the Beatles' compliments. Also, it shows what a great showman Ed Sullivan was, he was smart enough to give them loads of airtime. Good for ratings but old Ed recognized talent too.
@efrem1 - Oh please! Steve Jobs was about money. The Beatles made money as a byproduct of their love of music. Likely, they would've continued for years even if they hadn't found fame. Steve Jobs would have gone on to real estate.
The energy, charisma and talent was there from the beginning..... Ed lSullivan never even heard of them till 3 months or so before this appearannce and he was over frigging whelmed.... Like the rest of us, things would NEVER be the same...... They knocked the doors DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing...they started with "I want to hold your hand. Add a little acid, and they evolved to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" in just a few years. I miss the 60s, And I wasn't even born till the end of the 70s! Love those guys!
@1987Dantheman - George's pedestrian guitar playing goes largely unnoticed because of John and Paul's strong vocals, lyrics and melodies. In the end, George could not hurt the Beatles...although he tried very hard to. The Beatles were forced to openly REJECT many of George's early pieces. Later, with their help, George improved. Frankly, I think (unlike John or Paul), George Harrison was largely replaceable. Heck, the Beatles were so good even YOU would have been a good replacement for George.
@TwoUselessLegs John and Paul had years of practice away from the spotlight. George had to start out of nowhere with the entire world to critique him. You can't compare them that way. And if his guitar playing was so "pedestrian" why would the more talented Lennon and McCartney keep him around? They could have done another Pete Best, easily.
@TwoUselessLegs Interesting how not two minutes ago I was talking with another user who was also using the oddly specific word "pedestrian" to describe George. Interesting...
@TwoUselessLegs it was the 60s. everything was weak until about '69 and onto the 70s, mc5, black sabbath, new york dolls, and so on...music just hadn't developed yet with guitar and crap. oh yeah and jimi hendrix :3 he was in '67.
@Lovemyselfidoes81- LOL Paul's enormous ego only got WORSE as the years went by. Take a look at "Let It Be". Listen to what John and George had to say about Paul's self-appointed rise in leadership. Paul told reporters that he felt SOMEONE had to take over when manager Brian Epstein died. Of course, Paul forgot to mention it to the band HE had appointed HIMSELF!
I had just turned 7 years-old. I remember the names in front of them. Little did I know that was the beginning a love for music that I still have today at 54. I think I want to watch Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color on Channel 5, but my older sister's finger nails in the back of my neck won out. The best wound I would ever receive.
I still get chills seeing this! I was in kindergarten then & asked mom "what is a Beatle?". She kept talking about watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. Their cute haircuts were considered long, & Beatle boots became popular.
I think I know the girl at 6:30. Not the one centered in the jumper, but the one behind her with the heavy necklace and shoulder length hair. Contact me if you see this. :)

TwoUselessLegs 5 months ago
@TwoUselessLegs Um, why are you a fan of a band you think has pedestrian guitar playing?
NeverDoubt1 5 months ago
@TwoUselessLegs John and Paul were forced to openly reject a lot of their own songs. What's your point?
NeverDoubt1 5 months ago
@NeverDoubt1 - John and Paul seldom rejected any
of their pieces outright. The "bridge" or the opening
phrase "needs work"...and then they'd fix things. With
George's music, often it was hard to know where to
begin. His music was DEAD ON ARRIVAL including
rejections from producer George Martin himself.
During the Rolling Stone interviews, John was asked
what he thought of George's music. With hesitation
and pausing...John diplomatically said "um, well...it's
not my kind of music".
TwoUselessLegs 5 months ago
@TwoUselessLegs John and Paul had years of practice away from the spotlight. George had to start out of nowhere with the entire world to critique him. You can't compare them that way. @imahappyvirus5 - I am grateful to George for his
contributions. He harmonized well and was passive
enough to let the others be creative and difficult. He
offered a sort of neutral energy to the overpowering
egos of John and Paul. Most bands would have
dissolved into chaos right at the beginning. The
Beatles only got better because they stayed together
long enough to experiment. However, George had
stood so close to the gods that, after awhile, he
started to confuse himself for one!

It is refreshing to watch these old videos, as they actually know how to sing, harmonize and play their instruments!

Because they don't have a clue what music is.
The Beatles are so important in the music business that even bands people who dislike the Beatles have been influenced by them.
Sorry guys but even if you say you don't like the beatles, you liked the beatles!!!!
