Tomtoms are easier to use, and the MapShare feature and ability to remove blocked roads/bridges is very useful. There's a local bridge that's permanently out, and on my Tomtom, I am able to remove it, so my Tomtom doesn't take me that way and instead routes me the best way depending on my destination. I have used several different models of both; do yourself a favor and buy a Tomtom.
This is not a real test. this is abolutly useless. Why? because you can't compare 2 software if not on same hardware. That would be like testing Word on a windows 98 with a 400mhz cpu and on the other hand a I7 with Windows7 . To compare garmin vs tomtom you have to get 2 identical PDA or notebook with the SAME gps receiver and only then you can test Navigator ( tomtom) vs Garmin software, otherwise it's non sense.
I don't care what anyone has to say to this comment all garmin gps units are junk I own 3 different garmin gps units and I own 2 tomtom's tomtom one xl and tomtom go 730 and both of my tomtom's are far better then garmin's gps as garmin provides to many roads on maps causing the map and gps to lag..... I honestly recommend tomtom's. Like I said I don't care what anyone has to say about this comment so keep your 2cents to yourself.
I dont think that anyone is noticing that - disregarding the pop-up option to terminate "demo mode" on the tom-tom - it takes 3 clicks to change from day/night mode, whereas on the garmin it takes 7 clicks to change to day/night mode, and another 5 clicks to get back to the display map for a total of 12 clicks just to change from day/night mode.
Tomtom is much more intuitive and easier to use. When I drive, I dont need to be paying attention to numerous garmin menus.
It may take more clicks to switch the Garmin in demo mode but while you are actually driving it will change from daylight mode to night mode automatically as it starts to turn to dusk so your comment is pointless as some sat navs you have to try and do this manually whilst driving
If you want dead accuracy then learn how to serch by coordinates and stop screwing with address crap. Go to google earth and find lat. long. of where it is that you want to go on the map and program it! Youll NEVER be 100 percent accurate with addresses. Its not the gps its the fact that the addresses are NOT accurate to began with. You can believe this or not. Its common FACT! Learn to use this coordinates feature if your vain about EXACTNESS!
Shoppers: TomTom's no longer offer FM transmitting of voice instruction due to laws in Europe they have DISABLED FM Transmitting for the entire world.
Existing TomTom users: if you perform the necessary firmware update above 8.01 you will LOSE FM transmitting of voice instruction. TomTom has disabled this feature for the entire world. Garmin, took a much more logical approach and only disabled it in Hungary and Poland (the two countries that ban the FM tranmission).
P.S. I also noticed, browsing through the comments made against these two entry level GPSs, that the Garmin has a sexier voice, a tank & brighter colours..
Well on the Tomtom you CAN upload your own icons (including tanks), change the voices (including downloading other ones from 3rd parties), change the colours, (inlcuding custom made colour schemes).
But also get real-time traffic, AND mapshare, - where if errors are found, corrections can be updated by the user community.
You can do all these things with Garmin too, apart from Mapshare. But if you purchase lifetime maps for garmin unit you may get them updated up to four time per year. The only TomTom thing I found missing on Garmin are dots on the road indicating distance.
@xoio you mean when trying to run away from police type of "quicker" ? XD For any normal driver the refresh rate of the Garmin should be sufficient.. otherwise I would think they would contribute more recourses to speeding up the refresh rate.... But on another note, I still do prefer the faster refresh rate, who wouldn't :P
maybe i'm dense but i can not tell what you are doing or how you are comparing Garmin and TomTom. I purchased one of each brand, and I am not sure which is best. Garmin told me that my destination was in 5 plus miles when in fact it was only about 3 miles. The TomTom hasn't yet arrived, so it'll be interesting to learn which if either is best. I once had a RoadRunner, which wasn't consistently reliable. I wish you could be more explicit/obvious in how you are comparing Garmin and TomTom
I don't care about all the bells and whistles. The number 1 thing I'm looking for in a GPS is map accuracy. My wife got me a TomTom ONE 3rd Ed. for my birthday, and just taking it from my house to work I've found many map INACCURACIES. Some didn't bother me that much, but the one of the expressways in my town had almost all the exits off by 50 - 100 yards. If I didn't know my way around I wouldnt know what the hell I was supposed to do. I'm gonna swap it for a Garmin and try it out.
Like I said. The exits were off. What if I was planning a trip across the country and I was in a town I'm not familiar with, that has heavy traffic while tomtom is telling me to turn right on an exit thats not there? Hell, someone could have a wreck trying to figure out what exit it's talking about.
Anyway, I'm gonna try Garmin. If I end up not liking Garmin either, then I'll just use my old method of printing my own maps using mapquest and google earth.
I agree. I fucking Hate tomtom. I've entered an address and the street name. Suddenly it brought me on the other side of the city and screwed me up big time.
Im off on buying a garmin next time i have the money. For now im using mapquest.
I have since bought Garmin Nuvi 205. I like it better than the TomTom I had. My display isn't ugly like the one in this video. My Garmin is a lot more accurate than the TT, but NONE of the GPS are 100% accurate, especially if you're in a rural area. Also all GPS will occasionally send you the long way, but so far my Garmin still gets me where I need to go even if it takes me down some unnecessarty roads. It was a life saver in when I drove to DC. Whatever you get, I still recommend paper maps.
Like I said. Whatever you get, I'd still use printed maps from mapquest to fall back on.
As for the guy talking about TomTom features like using a tank icon, who gives a shit about that lol. They both have real time traffic updates if you're willing to pay a monthly fee.
And as for the frame rate, I noticed my garmin was only slow during the demo, but it was fine during actual use.
Real thing: Once i was driving around on the highway with my TomTom GO 700...it drove me so crazy cause the signal kept going weak when its not supposed to...so i went through the same place with my Garmin NUVI 660 and thhe signal kept strong....i dont care if tomtom is faster...it has to work though...so i got a Garmin for its signal quality
Heres a REAL review, I was driving back home from the city today and TOMTOM drove me mad. I have both on my phone Garmin & TomTom and I find Garmin much better, much more accurate and more features, plus easier to use. It think I done a red light today just because of TomTom. I went to the same place at the same time with my Garmin a few days ago and it took half the time to get there than the Tomtom. So there you have it, your choice.
I'm about to buy a GPS (US). What I saw from this rewiew & correct me if U have 1 or both & have diff. experience: Screen. Nuvi: more details, lake, park, roads. Could be good or distracting, looks like chaos sometime. TT-shows the street names while driving. Big+. The Nuvi has the time & turn distance, while TT shows 6 info on the bottom & much easier to see/use. By the screen TT is better, but what about MAPS in the US? Battery life? Updates? Custom Voice? USB cable? Could use info. Thanks!!
I say garmin is better I have a garmin nuvi 250 and never get me lost at all. its good on off roads too and there is a PIO loader that you can put the speed cameras location and keep you informed all the time when you are close to it lol.
i have a garmin 200 and i put in a place to go today and it took me straight past it doing u turns i didnt need to do and it took me the wrong way i have avoid major raods as i am i new driver and it took me on motorway not good lol
If Garmin sucks then why are they one of the biggest leaders in aircraft avionics. They could not be any more reliable or functional. They have revolutionized light planes and even some jets.
I have Garmin Mobile XT in my N95 because in my country there are only maps for Garmin systems. Otherwise I would try Tom Tom, but I think it is pretty much the same :P

The colors on the TomTom are dull. The colors on the Garmin are superior and also the details. I can't say about the accuracy on the Tom Tom. The garmin does give errors by sending u to secondary roads but it always gets you to the place. This is not a perfect science.
I prefer the TomTom One because its directions are more accurate. I am keeping my fingers crossed, but he TomTom has not gotten me lost once yet. Not once. The Nuvi has superior graphics, but it got me lost half of the time.
I tested the tom tom along side with a merc sat nav and i found that the tom tom spoke more that the merc sat nav. So im a tom tom person lol hope this helps
I was thinking for the long time which GPS to buy. Thanks for the demo. Now I can easily decide which GPS to buy. Tomtom one shows more information than garmin, which is critical during navigation. Tomtom voice is loud, clear and more natural than garmin. I always have the best maps with tomtom due to mapshare feature. I can easily adjust the volume touching the bottom of the main screen in TT but in garmin I can do this in more steps, which may lead to accidents.
I just got a TomTom 920...So far, I must say, it's excellent. The main reasons I bought it were because of the voice recognition feature, the included very extensive European maps, and the ability to regularly update maps. I know Garmin is #1 and Navigon has the coolest graphics, but for my needs, the TomTom 920/920t is the way to go. In reality, no GPS seems to truly "have it all"...yet.
They wouldn't have interfered with each other, GPS Sat Nav devices are passive. It was the difficulty of setting up a camera in the car (too much wobble) but I'm working on a way to do just that - good point.
Nice unit, have you upgraded to the new OS with mapshare? It would be good to hear other users experience of this new feature - I haven't had a chance to use it properly, but it looks like a great idea.

where can i get the speed maps camera ect stuff im new to this any help would be great thanx
