  • it was shown again on TV last year with colours ;-)

  • Hurry, HURRY folks!

A kind poster has uploaded the ORIGINAL, COLOR footage of this performance from the Westdeutscher Rundfunk show "Music Convoy" from 1985.

    search ref: Gp6iXWKbTTw

  • Translation : Und ich weiss es ist nur ein Moment .

  • Excellent work!

  • @urganodevotaton THaNK You !! so nice of you.... Surprised, i am, the lyrics seem less dramatic than the song (an all time favrit), or than i expected, but given the mystery of her context or maybe something in the culture she's alluding to, maybe they're not.

  • @tommypsue Yea it's a favorite of mine too; my decidedly favorite by Xmal Deutschland that I know of. I was surprised by the lyrics too. The music felt/feels like a city is going to be leveled or something like that. But I guess the drama is all personal. The box could be a telephone booth where she waits for a call from someone not anywhere near as interested in her as she is in him. Apparently this dynamic is the norm for her love interests ("thousand hands, thousand words which can't...").

  • @tommypsue The general gist of my explanation comes from the German man who translated it for me. Box can be used to mean phone booth in German. It's also used for prison though that's less likely to be intended literally but perhaps emotionally it is. As a side note I think something's skrewy with Youtube these days because your comment didn't appear in my inbox. Just have to check up on my comments I guess.

  • @tommypsue Okay me & my OCD might be overdoing it but here are two more cool German language things about the song & the group: Augenblick is an expression for a moment literally meaning eye (auge) look (blick) with an n for whatever reason inbetween & Xmal means something like many times. So Xmal Deutchsland means something like many times Germany! Oh & the expression box in terms of a prison is actually for a prison ROOM.

  • translation anyone?

  • @tommypsue Here's a translation I asked of another (paying it forward): And I know/It is just a moment(4x)//And I wait/Too long in the box/It is just a moment,/A short moment.//And I know/Thousand hands/Thousand words//And I know/Thousand hands/Thousand words//Which can't hold anything/Which don't want to hold anything//And I know/As if he did not know/And I wait/As if he did not know.

  • I remember when i ride totally loaded with H and C in my Car and hear that mind blasting song - that was in the late eighties - THX

  • @ostfront45 A great way to hear them! :)

  • ouh fuck! x-mal in the best condition.

  • Uno dei migliori gruppi del panorama post punk-dark, la voce dissonante e acida di Anja è da brividi...

  • Awesome band! Brings back so much memories.

  • und . eins .

  • gooddd audio,

    thanks

  • My god this song is so amazing <3

  • to nie nostalgia ..dalej da się tego słuchać..miny Anji....nieśmiało mi....

  • miałaś wtedy 17 lat dziewczyno

  • very good band but at the end they turn to pop and it was very bad...

  • @tal1005 masz rację

  • What I like about Anja is how statue-like she is. I think that's interesting and a little bizarre.

She freaks me out. But that's good

  • @IamUberStein

She does have this mesmerizing statue-like stare.

  • @WoodRatGirl She is quite mesmerizing indeed, and yet so underrated.

  • @IamUberStein The most underrated artists are always the most mesmerizing and unique, I think.

  • she would make a nice couple with rony moorings from xymox

  • j'ai retrouvé un gars de ma jeunesse. Il continue à se teindre les cheveux en noirs. Il travaille à Pèle-Mèle Bruxelles. Il a grossi. Mais je n'oublie pas qu'il était musicien lui aussi. Tendance Siouxie and the Cure. Putain de New Wave fantastique.

  • dit lied en video's zijn fantastisch .

essa musica e o video são maravilhosos .

  • super cool stuff ***** Haven´t eared this band since 98...Good memories...

  • AMAZING !

  • AMAZING AMAZING

  • Tocsin is such a brilliant album. Reminds me of getting ready to go out clubbing in the 80s :)

  • Mein Gott, mein Favorit von Xmal Deutschland und dann noch so ein Video... übertrieben geil!

  • This really should be Germany's national anthem. A song to remind them of their spiritual place in the world.

  • hey good idea

  • i remember them at the lyceum wen the speaker stack fell over and scattered their drum kit. top band in 84

  • i like it and everything but i think they are just totally copying soiuxise and the banshees, sheis totally imitating the dances and expressions and everything, or idk somebody is copying somebody, im not an expert or nothin. but most bands are just rip offs of other bands, so its no big deal.

  • Excellent synchronization and a fine job on this one; I admit to having had a difficult time at first in determining whether it wasn't a 4AD promo!

It's good to know that others still find the comparisons to Siouxsie to be dubious ones. It smacks of the same sort of lazy "journalism" wherein certain contemporary acts are compared to Joy Division. But such is life, I guess.

  • I couldn't agree more.

  • Think about it from Anja's point of view. To ALWAYS be compared to something else. I feel like she doesn't get the respect she deserves.

  • I could watch Anja Huwe all day..

  • me too, and yet there's nothing more of her except a hanful of videos on here

It's like she's lost in vhs

  • amazingly well done mate god that was beautiful..

  • This gives me nostalgia too....

  • sweet jeezums this brings back some really great memories. *goes into nostalgia*

  • que increible debe haber sido estar en uno de sus conciertos!!!

  • Wolfgang Ellerbrock was a better bassist than Steve Severin, however, and Manuela Rickers gave Xmal a more consistent guitar sound than the Banshees ever achieved.

    LOL

    You CAN NOT be serious...

  • Every time someone compares Xmal Deutschland to Siouxsie and the Banshees, Anja's heart breaks a little more. Well, mine does anyway.

  • Well that's just too bad...Anja sounds like Siouxsie, singing in German.

Wolfgang Ellerbrock was a better bassist than Steve Severin, however, and Manuela Rickers gave Xmal a more consistent guitar sound than the Banshees ever achieved.

Anja is definitely otherworldly though, Cyndi Lauper on acid.

  • ...and I gotta' say...

Manuela Rickers was a great axe-chick. Boy, she could make that geetar scream and swoop perfectly to Anja's half-crazed growling!!

    Kickass!

  • Pass the speed, I gotta' pogo!

God, how I was in love with Anja! That tough, teutonic growl - so much like a germanic Siouxsie Sioux.

Xmal just kicked ass and were one of the 80's great bands that never quite made it.

  • Oh God I love Anja Huwe! She was a weird chick.

Does anyone else think she was weird, but in a good way?

  • Apparently it's IX-MAL I read somewhere

  • X-mal Deutschland.

  • Those eyes. That Hair. That voice. That Dance. That Music.

My favorite band that I never knew how the hell to pronounce. SHMALL DEUTSCHLAND? EX-MAL DEUTSHCLAND. UHK-SHMALL DEUTSCHLAND?

  • Que buena canción!!

  • Don't forget that Oct. 13th is John Peel Day!

  • And Oct. 14th is Rick Rubin day!

  • Good King John

  • the best damn song of xmal i love it

  • Haven't seen this footage in years. Great job repairing the sound.

Now if only someone would properly compile their pre-4AD stuff and their early Peel sessions.

  • i dont think anja and the others would like their music to be germany's national anthem ; )

  • notice the guy in crowd at the end of the video

  • Wow, Manuela Rickers was a female John Mac Geoch !

  • love this band

  • Thank,¡¡¡Xmal Deutschland.!!!

  • wow the 80's ...I just can't stop thinking of all the idiots listening to that crap machine madonna when they could have seen the best band ever! Pay attention kids there's great stuff out there just gotta find it.

  • My fav song as well. I was lucky enough to see them three times. Manuela Rickers guitar sound is the shit and I swear that Anya looked at me at smiled when I was down the front at one gig.

  • Love the song. It should be Germany's national anthem

  • my favorite xmals'song, i used to dance it in the early 90's in Lima, Peru...Thanks for the post!!!!

  • I like the way Anja warms up into the song, She was uba cool.

  • Thanks for posting it. It was my fave song in ninth grade (1984), and all the other "waver" kids were jealous that I was the first to tape it on an alternative show. I was the first to have the album. Funny how things like that matters to kids! Now I'm much older but I really appreciate the dark intensity of this song.

  • What a kick ass song

  • love it!!!!

  • Wunderbar !!

  • anja huwe & .co are GREAT!!!!! i love this music...

  • It's great by drinking a bottle of wine.

    It's typical "Depro-Punk", I like it then.

  • and they said siouxsie was a weird performer! haha love em both either way, great video.

  • cquilty this is excellent which makes me wonder where the hell did you find this the audio is mindblowing

  • The video can be found on several YouTube-like sites but on that version the intro and outro are missing. Since they're miming anyway (to the studio recording from the album 'Tocsin') I was able to add better quality audio straight from the 'Tocsin' cd.

  • @cquilty Thanks for a much better quality video of this.

  • @cquilty ok i love you.
