Boy, I 'll tell you Muay Boran is really a forgotten martial art, even in Thailand. If it is so deadly and effective then why have so few Thai's gone on to teach it. A lot of the moves are telegraphic. In America, we use what works and discard what does not. Maybe it is forgotten for a reason, it never evolved. The kicks that you are showing aren't really special. I like the history of Siam into Thailand, Muay Boran into Thai Boxing and Krabi Krabong into Ledrit.
1.Muay Boran is a modern term for all ancient thai boxing styles, there fore is neither a style nor a name of a style. its just a term like the word "Martial art" .
2.So few Thai masters teach it bekuz most of it is techniques are not legal, and muay thai is a business why bother training something you cant use in the ring?
3.You said its forgotten kuz it never evolved....it DID evolved...into modern "MUAY THAI"..lol
@lazy702622 Yeah, I agree with everything you said. Boran is anything before 1920's and obviously it evloved over centuries. the moves are not legal in sport muay thai, so they arent generally taught anymore, because it would be a waste of time.
@lazy702622 How can Muay Boran be a modern term for ancient Thai boxing? It is a generic term for ancient boxing. Many techniques are not legal? They are taught all the time in America, for instance: eye strikes, groin strikes, head butts, etc. Boran is a self defense system that helped the Thai armies defend the people. Now it is used by the Royal Army and called Ledrit.
@clearcombat No one teaches muay boran because you cant make money with it. in Thailand, you make money by training fighters. they go fight and you get a percentage. there are no muay boran fights. By definition, boran is just anything before 1920s when modern sport muay Thai was codified. The kicks are extremely special in that they don't exist in modern sport muay Thai. how did you evaluate that sok chai telegraphs? Did you fight him? how many years did you spend training over here?
@brooklynmonk1 There are plenty of self defense schools all over the world that teach deadly moves. You are in the sport mode not the self defense one. What is so hard to understand between the two. I practice sport fighting and self defense, the difference is that in the street you can do anything to survive like: spear hand to the eyes, groin strikes, hair pulling, sucker punch or kick, stand up choke outs, back strikes and knees to the face on the ground.
@allinthemix10 Right, because you're so accurate at hitting you are really going to be able to spear hand someones eyes. And sucker punches? A sucker punch means you hit the guy without him knowing what's going on, you sir are not a martial artist if you rely on sucker punching. You're just a jack ass.
i just can tell you this, the guy which is running on his hands,is actual the master of a good friend of mine, and was the first teacher of international martial arts superstar tony jaa, every thing he shows in this vids,is for sure not the things he would teach his students,if he takes one.he is a very nice person, and absolutely deadly if someone would threaten him with life..believe me.
Another inquiry: Why do you wear running/cross-training shoes in a grassy (looking) area, while everyone else is barefoot? From a podiatry stand point, this could be very unhealthy for your lower extremities.
i normally train barefoot but that field was littered with broken glass and garbage. those guys go barefoot all of the time, but i couldnt risk it in that environment.
I have a question that has been boggling me. How do you afford to traverse all over Asia and Europe after having paid for two Post-Graduate degrees? That to me, is astonishing.
i write books and work on movies and TV to get money. i also write for magazines which pays a little. when i dont have movie or TV work or any other choice, i stop somewhere and teach school because one of my post grad diplomas is in teaching english.
I was wondering if that was you! Tell me, is Bill Duff really that arrogent (sorry about the spelling). To me he kind of puts himself off as a badass and know it all. I'm no martil art historian but some of the things he have stated has been false. Then again, just my opinion.
@matthewkulow yes that is me, Antonio Graceffo, and yes Bill and Jason both felt qualified to lecture me about southeast Asian martial arts. they even lectured my teacher Paddy Carson, about Thai boxing. paddy was a trainer in Thailand for 11 years and has been a trainer and gym owner and fight promoter in Cambodia for 10.
That was the reason why I was turned off by the show. I truely enjoyed Fight Quest so much better. Both those guys where so much humble and open minded. I just recently began training in Muay Thai and its been pretty tough. I would love to travel to someplace like Cambodia and train in Bokotor(think thats spelt right :( ). I like the fact that the guys are short like me!
@brooklynmonk1 that's so wrong. but antonio, i am curious to know that the fight between jason and ot phuthong was a bit of staged or not? also i would like to see you testing tv hosts whenever they make a trip to asia and give them a hard time for accumulating skills in a week? i find it impossible for anyone to gain new sets of skills and go up against a champion.
@JoeyT80 Od Phou Thoung would kill Jason Chambers in a Khmer Boxing fight. Jason knows MMA and he has a descent kick for an MMA guy, but probably even a mid-rank khmer boxer would shut him down.
honestly i went to surin looking for khmer martial art but i didnt find any. there are a lot of boxers in surin and many of them are khmer, so we could say khmer fighting spirit is alive in surin. but i didnt find any bokator. there was some muay boran which is probably related to bokator but i wish i had found even one bokator master because that would have been proof.
@brooklynmonk1 unfortunately the common consensus from both people in Cambodia and some martial arts researchers that modern bokator is a recent style founded by master San Kim Sean based on his hapkido experience and technique he picked up from old kickboxing masters in cambodia and not truly a ancient cambodian style...None has the complete art in cambodia thanks to the khmer rouge...but i guess it doesnt hurt to recreate something.
there is no actual fighting in aikido, so they wouldnt stand a chance. thailand is here and has been for many centuries and we are still waiting for an aikido guy to turn up and beat anyone.
i will fight any aikido guy, bring him to thailand and lets get in a ring. i could fight him in cambodia or vietnam. i dont care where. just bring it. but what did you like about my video?
no guard whne he kicks? he's gonna get knocked the fuck out... sorry i love muay boran but this is not bad, but rather "lack of discipline" technique...
hey man, i admire your effort! i´m sure you are much better than me, did´t mean to offend you, but you ARE a little stiff, your video is great, and you don´t ruin the video, u should value yourselve more since just like me i´m sure theres a lot of people that apreciate your videos adn what you are doing for martial arts, i´ll watch the rest of your videos periodicly, since i don´t have that much time at the moment. thank you for posting, and keep the spirit up.
Here is a qote from your previous post "though the white guy is really stiff and he kinda ruins it" i am absolutely not down on myself. you are down on me.
great vid.the fact that you found this guy and muay boran is soo old and pretty much non existant bcuz everyone wants to watch muay thai makes it great.i too want to keep the old styles alive and going.buh society these days is watering everything down till stone becomes mud :/ its sad.plz contact me id like more info from you.
I don't listen anything but, this doc is soo stupid, we need a interpreter of movements of the thai teacher? why translate, what do it the white guy there? It's soo amateur this film, it's same two childs playing fighting in the street.
sorry your grammar is really bad and i dont quite understand perhaps ou could have a friend correct it for you and post again. it seems you didnt like the video but i didnt see a better one on your channel. please show me how to improve
you are right, muay boran is a form o kickboxing, but the difference is that muay boran doesnt have rules, where modern sport muay thai does. so muay boran has a lot more techniques than modern muay thai.
Not sure why you are so angry, but i have written a(and read a number of books on th subject) bokator is probably the oldest, then comes muay boran, then muay thai, then sport kik boxing. french savate is somewhere between muay thai and kick boxing. seriously, please reply and explain why you were so angry and why you used foul language. i never said that kickboxing came first.
true western kickboxing was derived from full conact karate. but obviously savat predates kickboxing by more than 100 years and muay thai predates karate by a few hundred years and bokator predates muay thai by 500 years and there was never a significant cultural exchange between southeast asia and japan

@ACLogikel A finger jab is what I learned when I studied JKD. Sucker punches happen all the time.
allinthemix10 5 months ago
@allinthemix10 Reading comprehension is not your strong suit. You are not going to finger jab a trained fighter accurately like you think you can.
Anyone who says "deadly move" is automatically an idiot in the martial arts. There is a VERY good reason for this. Because you are all idiots.
I'll take my hardened body and a shin kick over every single "deadly move" you know.
ACLogikel 5 months ago
@brooklynmonk1 Don't people just want to learn self defense by learning Boran?
