i need to fade a pic to make business cards. Firstly how did you get that plain white as background and then the car as your layer, i select the picture i want and it becomes the background, err i really don't know what I'm doing please help.

i know ms paint really well and I've had photoshop for 3years now and it still baffles me.

@themaskisthebest It sounds like you have the gradient the wrong way, switch the gradient around, make sure you follow step by step.

Please, I'm not having a go but the terminology you are using would imply the watcher has a basic knowledge of PS, I want to simply make a picture a background for a powerpoint presentation, but masks and gradient tools are far too advanced for me. If you simplified it, mote people would benefit. Your style shows you are good a tutorials. So again please do not take this as a criticism .

@jrodgers1961 A layer mask is what is next to the FX button on the Layer Tab right down at the bottom (F7) And a gradient tool is directly underneath the rubber tool, if you follow the tutorial step by step you will be able to do it.

@MeIzzLikingMw2 It may be because you are using one of the smart objects i am not totally sure about that, try retstarting Photoshop if not type the error into Google, you will find an answer.
