  • Can someone explain to me why the RAF switched to the Tornado ADV instead up upgrade their Phantoms much like the Germans did? What the Tornado a jobs program or something?

  • @discofishing Because flying a Phantom at the high speed / low altitude a Tornado can will break every bone in a Phantom crew's body. A.o.:)

  • @voxhunden I'm not talking about the strike variant of the Tornado (the IDS/ECR), mate. I'm talking about the Tornado ADV (Air Defense Variant). My argument is basically this: the Tornado F2 was not such a big leap in technology or performance over the Phantom. The Phantom could have been upgraded and kept in service until the Typhoon arrive. The Germans did this for example. They took the Tornado IDS, but kept the Phantom and just upgraded it.

  • @discofishing You're right, the Tornado ADV wasn't exactly a breakthrough, and in fact underperformed in many respects compared with the Phantom. Marketing meets politics, I guess. Keeping an industry alive.. Perhaps cheaper to operate and build vs. retrofit as well. The exact answer will no doubt lie in some back issue of FI.

  • Shortly before they became a training squadron. Sad stuff.

  • Debate their shortcomings all you want, I still think that the Spey-Phantoms were sexy jets...for an F-4 Phantom II that is.

  • THE TIGERS I FEAR NO MAN

  • @themightyPhantom Better fear the MIG 29.

  • 74 squadron aka the Tigers

  • Danke...
