I'm a freshman and was number one on varsity at a school that is known for it's awesome cross program. I plan on being # 1 in distance for track as well. That's what's up! :)
@cicirunner Guess I'm not legit (yet); I finished with a time of 17:17. >.< I improved from my previous time of 17:26 though, but I have some work ahead of me if I want to reach that sub 17 time.
In my school, varsity REALLY isn't hard to make. This is my first year running, as a junior. I previously did soccer. Anyways, I'm the #5 guy and I'm running a 19: 24. And our best guy is like high 17's low 18's. And, there's only 23 runners on my team in total. I don't get anymore respect for being on varsity. So I kind of laughed at your story as it has been the entirely opposite experience for me.
@cicirunner Actually, the reason we're so bad is because we're a division 5 school. We actually don't loose that much. It's just we're in a really uncompetitive league for xc. Like today, I did a 19:53, which is bad for me and still came in 7th place out of like 30 or so varsity runners in a meet between 4 teams.
Varsity doesn't mean to much at my school. My coach says that if you're in the top 7 for at least 2 races then you get a varsity letter. So in a couple races she'll purposely not let a couple of us varsity guys not race in unimportant meet so that 8th and 9th guys can "be on varsity" for one or 2 races. Our varsity isn't very stable. Our 1st guy runs 17:19 while our 7th runs 19:14. Our guys varsity team isn't very good.
@JoshMcRay17:19 for the #1 guy? Wow!! Our 7th guy was mid 17's when I was a senior. I guess my video addresses the more extreme varsity scenario. My high school was pretty strict when I was a Freshmen. 8 people got letters since 7,8, and 9 would flip flop around. I was one of them lol. Over time, my school became less strict to where maybe 10 guys would get letters. It was sort of lame.
haha i wish my team was like yours im number 5 on my teams varsity and it pisses me off to no end to see how jv runners run ohnestly on my team varsity does not even convers with jv only high jv like jv 1-3 but thats it oh and its awsoam to find a runner postin good videos on youtube it makes me happy to see that there are people who actualy caire i just wish my team was as hard working as you made yours sound
I disagree with losing graciously. My team was always the sorest losers in the region. We had a rep and people would always get out of our way in the last mile.
im a freshman this year and i did HORRIBLE on my races! I know i can do better and im realy dertermined to prove everyone who says im not a good runner wrong. Next year im going to give it my very best and try to make Varsity eventually.
I'm a freshman and I was always in the top jv spot and never varsity this year, it's frustrating but also motavation, because next year some of the seniors on varsity are leaving and I'm determined to make varsity along with my friend who was always in the 7th spot on varsity lol
i am a senior and have always been JV, but i have been working really hard this summer to make varsity... its very hard at our school. our 7th runner runs like 16:30 depending on the course but ya :/
Varsity I know for my school is hard to make for a girl I got #1 JV and that alone was hard to make. I remember last year how I would be having to alternate for a varsity race and the environment is so much different .JV its more of a mess around who cares type environment. Varsity is a serious its a prove that you have what it takes to be racing here and don't screw around. I loved your 7th runner idea our guys team has that same idea except an old 80's shirt.
haha awesome. Congrats on snagging the top JV spot. Your team sounds really competitive in which case that is really impressive. Keep fighting for Varsity!
In Cross, we won Conference and District. Got 4th at Regions and our Region is the toughest since we were ranked 4th in the state. Our best runner got hurt during the Regional race and couldn't run State, so we had to substitute him with a JV runner, so we got 9th at State.
Dang. Yeah we have a good region too. We got 4th in our region and 8th in the state for my high school team. I'll probably be a varsity runner for my school this year cause 3 senors are leaving and also alot of our good JV dont wanna do it anymore.
I think you may be confused. 7 isn't a number designated by my school. In the varsity race, only 7 from each school are eligible to run. Otherwise, you run in the junior varsity race. Anyone can sign up for cross country but only the top 7 are varsity. Also, the 8th guy may travel with the varsity team as an alternate if the team makes it far in the season. Junior varsity runners do not run distract, region, or state; their season is over at conference.
you know whats a good xc thing between us varsity guys and our jv guys??
when we do 400's we let the jv guys get a 10 second head start and we have to catch the jv kids before the end..catching them means a win, not catching them a loss. so we did about 12-14 400's and whichever team had more losses had to do an 400 or something like wallsits or lunges the entire first period lol
and for the record our jv guys were fast enough so that with a 10 second head start they had a chance for a win
@metareborn I ran that time Junior year but I had some problems Senior year so I didn't get any faster. I'm not bragging about it. I'm proud at how far I came though. Started at 22 minutes freshman year.
Im so far away from varsity but im gonna run 70+ miles a week in the summer training and im gonna do winter and spring track and hopefully be at least 7th man varsity by my senior year which is next year.
nice vid. im really finding them helpfull as i am new to the xc tradition. well i found that the varsity thing you said isn't really true at my school. i'm friends with most of the varsity kids and most of them are riding pretty sick cars.
haha the point I was making though is the varsity runners cared more about running than anything else....more than cars. We were enthralled in the competitive spirit on our team. Most notably, my friend and I would turn the workouts into races lol. It was fun. Put the other runners in their place. It was actually good, because it kept some people from getting too cocky.
lol ooops. well hes a good friend i met him because of xc. i didn't know he was varsity until like 3 days ago so it's all cool. lol he gives me rides to my house just cause i live close to him.
yeah! im a junior girl at mirmonte and i just started cross country this year and i ran my first race of the season on vars and got second for my school and 18 overal w/ 14.08 in the 2 mi. but i was soo nervous lol i was fucking scared do you have any tips how not to get nervous?
lol nice vid vars is definitely for the cool kids
Run like a horse that just got spooked by a snake lol. You will always have some nerves, but if you do well, at least you will be confident in knowing that you can do well under the pressure.
I dig that shirt ur wearing tho. haha where'd u get it? but u have good xc advice and tips too. your videos are actually helpful. I like that #7 stuff u do/did too. Good Video!
Thanks! I actually took this shirt from my friend. I got a Family Guy one that said, "Freakin sweet," but I liked his better, so I traded him. He didn't care either way so the whole exchange worked out haha.
-_-....i wunned to make varsity this year, 10th grade. run at least 500 miles over the summer, but i just dont have the time, i have to do shit while everyones at work and my sis at drama, its rediculous. i was going for 18 flat. people laughed at me because my record was 22:21, but i ran less than 50 miles this summer, running like every two weeks because my mom only has the time for that, and last time i broke my record two days straight, from the old to 20:58, to 20:41
and it doesnt make sence. and it just pisses me off, naturally talented runners. its just bullshit. i could run 1000 miles over this next summer and the other dude in my grade will still be the top 3rd runner since freshman. i just cant stand it. i have my motivation, i WANT pain, i WANT my body to explode with threshholds in my calfs and lungs. but even when i put myself through it theres always that one person...track, i kick his ass cuz im a sprinter, but i WUNNA be a long distance guy.
in 8th grade i lead a freshman race i wuznt supposed to be in, i was in a different race then him. i came in second because i let a guy pass me at the end, and ill always think of that one time everytime i lose something. but i still came in second, and it felt great, then he just keeps saying he would have beat me by a minute. and it just makes me feel like shit. then the varsity runners get pissed becuz i wasnt as dirty as them. its just bullshit. lets just say next time i have this chance..
finally have a chance to do this, do wut i want, and run 7-10 miles a day...will i ever beat him? i truly am proud no homo when i see him doing better, but it just keeps showing me theres no chance. i suck, ok? simple as that. i have to actually work more then these natural runners, no matter how hard i try im not getting better, i naturally run a 7:30 mile without pushing at all, they run 6 flat without pushing, wheni push i can barely make that. do i have a reason to be angry?
that i try? when school comes ill be able to actually do wut i want, but thats already too late. summer is supposed to be an extra season for me, even when i have the chance and i take it, nothing comes from it. not nothing, just mental state. XC and track have boosted my mentality state beyond. and...physically, nothing. absolutely nothing. natural runners will always be infront of u, whether its 5 meters or 5 miles, and it just pisses me off...thats the only reason, if even a natural one to
give up. but i wont. im never going to give up. but why should i keep going? for me? yea of course i do it for me, when i beat records by my practices i get excited, the day before every race last season wuz a good running day. when nothing hurts and i can just enjoy it and push it. come race day...everyone sees me like i dont even try...do i have a reason to be angry with these natural runners? my friend had only half his heart working and leads the team, but he graduated, but hes a natural -_-
first day of practice I could only run 2 miles. I ran my first 5K race of the season my freshmen year in 22:20. By the end of my first season, I was around 19:08. By the end of my second season, I was 17:32. By the end of my 3rd season, I was 16:39. You have to keep at it man. If you work hard, one day you will be the one laughing.
you're right about the naturally talented runners, but you can still compete. The reason you have trouble keeping up is because you are too busy to run consistently. You can't run for a few days and expect to be great all of a sudden. It takes me about 2.5 months of vigorous running 50+ miles/week to get to my top shape. Also, it's easier for me b/c I am already a runner. A new runner will take years to reach their true potential. Keep at it and commit to it if you want the results.
yea, but i dont expect anything to be done from just a view days. my point is that lets just say by the end of my third season i would be at 16:39 like you, theres still no way its gunna be possible to beat that top guy. wutever, but thanks anyways
yea this totally reminds me of today...it was the first official practice for my team. Last year we only had like a team of like 8 guys, but this year we have like a team of 15 guys. And btw we arent very a big school (only 600 ppl in the school). I think if I race to my potential I think I'll be the #3 guy. But im pretty sure ill be at least #7.
yea, we have a pretty consistant team going in. our best guy is gonna be close to 17 flat
2. 3, and 4 about 17:30 to 18 ... 5,6,and 7 18:30 to 19 flat.
Yes we are planning to place high at sectionals, try to make it out of regionals...on to semi-state. Semi-state i think is going to be as far as we are gonna get unless we have an unbelieveable performance in Semi-state.
For conference, its gonna be us against the one cross country powerhouse. For track, we won our conference against them
I'm a freshman and was number one on varsity at a school that is known for it's awesome cross program. I plan on being # 1 in distance for track as well. That's what's up! :)

I'm sorry dude. Just do what you can. There will always be someone in front of you. If not him, then someone else.

yea this totally reminds me of today...it was the first official practice for my team. Last year we only had like a team of like 8 guys, but this year we have like a team of 15 guys. And btw we arent very a big school (only 600 ppl in the school). I think if I race to my potential I think I'll be the #3 guy. But im pretty sure ill be at least #7.

that's good man. Does your team have a chance of going anywhere this year?

yea, we have a pretty consistant team going in. our best guy is gonna be close to 17 flat
2. 3, and 4 about 17:30 to 18 ...
