I think Rhys needs to go back to formula for the design of what kind of balance between power vs. cornering ability will work better on Pikes Peak. Tajima has it all down, not to mention he really is a monster through the corners. Dude has no fear!
If he could make that nasty ass mr platform of his all wheel drive, he would demolish the record. But an even better driver, say...... Tojima,(?) The record would be an astronimal feat to respond to. It would take a new breed of car builder/engineer to design a vehicle to compete with it.
Last year was transmission problems. This year it is brakes. Rhys Millen you need to find a 9 to 5 job because your father beat your time by 18 seconds and no pavement. You have lots lots of pavement, lots more budget, better cars and higher power. Monster Tajima wins the record AGAIN. You SUCK!
iv just watched them side by side aswell, rhys' car has loads of lag and a small power band and he cant keep it on boost coming out of corners - it sounds like he's driving it soft and smooth as he hasnt got throttle on til it straightens up. monster either has a wider power band or is just braver and keeps all 4 spinning so it doesnt bog.
also maybe worth asking if a lower centre of gravity works against rhys on gravel hairpins - less weight transfer to the tyres
So hes stuck relying solely on tire grip, and realistically probably fighting with cars aerodynamic properties, untill he can get to a point where he can utilize them. You cant tell very well from the car camera, but monsters car was almost wiggly, you can see his wing sway side to side at high speeds.
Well they were saying by next year the whole road will be paved, so if he brings this car back, he should have a pretty good chance, cuz honestly that car just wont do dirt, They started using body lines like that in Le Mans to increase LINEAR stability at high speeds, slip "head first" through the wind so to speak, that being said that car is going to be incredibly unstable in dirt. . .if he tries the typical rally drift, once the car picks up speed, its gonna want to go straight.
I just looked at it, couldnt quite tell what was going on, almost wana say that hump midway up that straight had somehing to do with it, or maybe tires werent fully scrubbed from the dirt . . But def not right
Well when i was saying areas of hard breaking, i was more reffering to the loss of speed, and having to accelerate, that FOOKIN-ZUKI comes out of corners like a psyco
Watching them side by side, I don't notice much braking differences. Though Tajima's car get out of the corners waaay better consistently through the run. Seems like a lot of turbo lag from Rhys's setup and this just gets more pronounced as the air gets thinner up top. Once it's spooled though...it's a rocket.
@TeCKis300 that's because monsters car was never driven and it was straight out of the showroom the go pro sponsor built it and left it in the showroom.
The PM580 is still a very new experimental car, 3rd times the charm Rhys, just a few more mods to handle better on dirt and you got this! Great job Rhys.
Yeah, i just watched them side by side, and Rhys "May" have had breakimg issues, but thats not what put him behind, if you watch the two together(which you should) you will see that tojima's acceleeration gets him ahead on the areas of hard breaking, and when there is a consistant high speed section Rhys catches up. And on the dirt section Rhys falls behind a pretty good amount in the slower hairpin areas, like a couple turns behind, but then starts to come back once speed picks up . . .
@dnkayto I noticed that Rhys was slower in the first parts where it had dirt and tojima had the advantage on devils playground, no wonder the almost twenty second gap between their times.
@dnkayto It wont let me do a video response for some reason but if you check out youtube.com/watch?v=RUAkKdbOruk&feature=related you can see something is definitely not right with his brakes.
Dang, I was really hoping Rhys would win this. What a shame that the brakes gave trouble toward the end of the run. It does seem like Rhys is faster on the pavement, but Monster's Suzuki seems to do better on dirt. I can hardly wait for next year. After a couple years' development on the Hyundai PM580, the third year should be a charm. Great job Rhys!
Seems like the car doesnt like dirt very much, because with the pace you maintained on the pavement, that should have gotten you below the ten minute mark, if held longer, because from the outside, your lines were more consistant and fluent than tojima. just seems like his car held a better pace on the dirt, and coming out of corners his acceleration was more aggresive . .

Back to driving school Rhys. You sucked at rallying and you suck at this. Keep to drifting and give the opportunity to a better driver!

@dnkayto I think it is also because Tajima's car had more horsepower than Rhys Millen's car
