  • I believe Secretariat could actually speak english and communicate with humans.

  • Secretariat had the "x-factor", an abnormally large heart inherited through the female line. He had the biggest engine, and built-in greatness. The others never had a chance. His record still stands, and is unlikely to be broken. I remember this race well; everyone was STUNNED. No one had ever seen anything like it, and we probably never will again, Thanks for posting.

  • @DennyG52 I agree! He's a horse God! It seems Sec was also a really nice, gracious & intelligent racehorse. He liked people; was friendly towards his fans who came to meet him, after he retired....How many Humans can say that? Gotta love Secretariat!

  • i watched the Film 'Secretariat made in 2010 or 2011 about this beautiful racehorse, and the actual lady who owned him was actually at the end of the film in the crowd at the point when 'Big Red' which is what his handler called him won the race. Amazing film :)

  • wow :))

  • Unbelievable!!

  • I'm 12 years old and I am a runner. Every time I watch the movie it makes me feel like I can run faster than anybody. He actually inspired me I run.

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutely stunning!! What heart this horse had!! I hope his record remains untouched!

  • I was a young boy when this great horse was in his prime. I remember seeing him on the news when I was just a boy.In my opinion, the greatest horse that ever lived.RIP Big Red.

  • that is crazy !!!!!!!!!!! after watching the movie i will never give up on anything. My grandpa talks about this horse all the time. Now I know the message he was trying to put across......

  • This is my poryn

  • Wow..

  • @MyHeartWobblesForYou plus....how does determination create a horse?

  • @MyHeartWobblesForYou without God, there would be no determination, or will, or love, or greatness or even someone to achieve it

  • If you look towards the final stretch he is actually running faster. That horse is straight beastmode.

  • @StealthG6On18s That has been documented, that he was actually accelerating at the end!

  • Phenomenal

  • What a bad motherfucker.

  • one hundred percent reason to remember the name . what a race , man . legendary event .

  • only God could create such a miracle of a horse

  • @ranapa4440 Nope no "God".. determination and the will to do what you love.. that's what will you let you achieve and strive for greatness that almost noone could achieve.

  • @TTBOYFORPRESIDENT Stop spreading your garbage on the Secretariat vids and then closing your account. Who's taking seriously a monkey who spreads hate and then runs away!

  • @sassyseraphify The point I was trying to make was “training” would be necessary for Secretariat to run a ¼ mile under 21 secs. His fastest ¼ I’ve been able to substantiate is around 22.5 or so. Big Red was much more heavily muscled than the average thoroughbred…similar to a QH build only a little taller. I just think he had the tools to match a QH out of the gate if he was trained from the beginning to do it.

  • Just watched this movie, what an amazing horse, and team!

  • Just my opinion, but I think, with the proper training, Secretariat would have won the All American Futurity for 2 year old quarter horses at Ruidoso Downs. Big Red would have to run just ONE quarter mile in less than 20.886 secs to own the track record.

  • @valligator77 Unfortunately, Secretariat had faster and faster times the further he went. As the movie stated (honestly) Secretariat couldn't find his stride for quite a while coming out of the gate. That's why in this race he took a while to take up the lead rather than taking it from the start. Sure, if he'd just run a mile race and been immediately entered in the Futurity, perhaps he could have won, but Qhs have that starting surge that TBs lack.

  • If this were filmed today, I'd say it was a CGI effect. It's just unbelievable. How awesome it must have been to be there.

  • Love it!!

  • Secretariat is sooooo AMAZING!!!!!!! i watch this like EVERY SINGLE DAY!!1 aaahhh

  • zenyatta was sweet , but please cmon now , you cant be serious to even mention her with Big Red , Point Given would had trounced her

  • just incredible even after all these years , look over the triple crown races , never ever will we see something so special ever again

  • "Ladies and Gentlemen... Ladies and Gentlemen!! For the next ten thousand years, as long as mankind remembers how to sit astride a horse, they will know the name Secretariat..."

  • I have a hat that says " Secretariat us widening now, he is moving like a tremendous machine!" I live it!

  • @sjamil316 I love Zenyatta to death , but there is no way she could beat him!

  • legend.

  • It's really great that we can see this.

  • His record still stands! As well say that he was alone on the track that day!

  • Normal horses heart 8.5 lbs shams heart 18 lbs secretariats heart estimated 22 lbs by same vet who autopsied both sham and secretariat watch the silky sullivan santa anita derby

  • @LB40187 lol! Good one

  • Named by ESPN as the #35 greatest althlete from North America. The only animal to make the list.

  • @LB40186

    #84 Man o' War

    #97 Citation

  • @SecretariatOnSteriod Source? Or should I just file this under the innane ramblings of a conspiracy theorist? Let me guess... your dad bet on 'My Gallant'?

  • @sophiegirl1998 what are talking about?

  • Secretariat is amazing! In my opinion he is one of the greats of Horse Racing.

I am so privileged to have a horse with a direct Secretariat blood line <33

  • He's my great uncle

  • @SophieGirl1998 your uncle is a horse?

  • What amazes me is that sham would have won the triple crown that year if not for big red and every horse in the feild was destroyed in this race even sham

  • Trivia... Each quarter mile was faster than the last. Going a mile and a half thats just insane!!! Never be another Big Red. Ron Turcotte was lambbasted for riding the first 3 quarters by all the critics but he obviously knew he was on a wonder horse. Trivia no. 2.... Who has the 2nd fastest time in the Ky. Derby?.... Sham. And he didn't even win. Great horse in his own right.

  • This is what greatness looks like amazing just amazing... not to mention inspiring, love it!

  • Once in a while in our lives, we witness something so extremely amazing, we can't put what we feel into words. I imagine those who witnessed this, felt the same way. I saw the movie and "astounded" doesn't begin to describe what I felt when I watched it. "Big Red" and Ms Penny Chenery are and always will be Legends :)

  • Wow, This still give me goosebumps. Imagine seeing this again in your lifetime!

  • Magnifique!!! Secretariat, pour moi, c'est le meilleur cheval de toute la Terre !!!!!

  • I'm sure the 143 dislikes of this video had money on Sham that day. I'd say on that day in 1973 99% of the population was pulling for "Big Red" and then to witness the most impressive triumph in the history of horse racing was a miracle.

  • One of the most famous sports quote comes from this race.."He is running like a tremendous machine". It brings chills to me every time I watch this race.I watched it live and nother will compare to this.

  • Here the world's fastest horse, and his record in the 37 years he has been brought up at no one comes close, I can not come at the top of this great ancestor worship has managed the impossible does not like his wife

  • Of course this is an epic, historic performance in the history of not just horse racing, but in all of sports. Whenever I watch this race, apart from admiring Secretariat's brilliance, I always feel a little bad that Sham couldn't have held up for 2nd place. You see a disheartened and defeated Sham fading back to inferior horses after matching strides w/ arguably the greatest horse of all time for 3/4 of a mile. The perfect finish would've been Secretariat/Sham w/ the field way back.

  • @bailinnumberguy Sham ultimately was broken and injured. It is a fair debate whether he would have lasted in Belmont if Sec wasn't there - lets remember he finished last that day...and never raced again. His overall record even throwing out his performances in the 1st 2 TC races wasn't inspiring. Sham's place in history is secured; he's up there with ll those horses who won 2 but not 3rd TC race. Not bad considering he only raced I believe 11 times in his brief career and finished 5 - 5 - 1

  • I don't know why, but I always bawl whenever I watch this. My favorite part about it is that it is clear as anything that that horse ADORES his job. Not one single tap with the whip, all the jockey had to do was let Secretariat run. And there you have it, won by 31 lengths. Truly the best racehorse that ever lived.

  • It's a freak of nature. Incredible machine. Complete domination. One and only Secretariat!

  • I think that Jockey was just holding on for dear life.

  • I enjoyed the movie, but the Producers should have acquired the rights to use Chip Anderson's call.. "Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE!”

  • hahhahaha Sham didn't get second..........always thought he did......... interesting........ Secretariat is my FAVORITE horse of all time though :)

  • Just watched movie about his life...amazing super horse and incredible story!! What a race!!

  • Big Brown would consider a legend had he not blew that Belmont race.

  • @nbsbb2009 No!!!

  • Sorry...that's 24 seconds per quarter for the entire race. 23.88 for the first 10 furlongs. 23.20 for the first 3/4 mile.

  • FYI...Sec averaged 34 seconds per 1/4 for the entire race. Unheard of; otherworldly...especially considering he was on cruise control. The last 2 quarters were run in 25 flat. The first 3/4 mile was in 1:09 and 4/5ths. The final 3/4 mile was run in 1:14 and 1/5th. Sec is NOT speeding up at the end of the race. As stated, he is simply on cruise control. He also broke the 1 5/8ths record pulling up in this race.

  • I just saw the movie and i still don't understand how he did it

  • No horse would've been anywhere near Secretariat in this race. Horses are NEVER moving faster at the end of a race than they were at the beginning, it's that they slow down less than the other horses. Secretariat ran the last 1/4 mile in about :24, which is incredible considering the early fractions in this race and that it was over a mile and half.

  • No way Zenyatta could of beaten Secretariat my favorite horse followed by Seattle Slew and Seabiscuit i would love a dream race with those horses even though i know the outcome .

  • @bluzman38 no problem - just look up their best time for the 1.5 mile and be done with it. either way, Sec still shattered the best record at least at Belmont by 2 3/5 seconds so I am guessing that no horse has ever done better than 2:25:00 ever which means that no horse has come within 5 lengths (about 25 feet) of Sec at that distance.

  • @80cathryn The 2nd fastest 1 1/2 miles on dirt is by Prove Out in the 1973 Woodward upsetting a very tired and ailing Sec. His time was 2:25 and 4/5th's, approx 8-9 lengths behind Sec in the Belmont. Track was very wet with standing water but PO had a good line and a firm surface. PO went on that year to, also, defeat Forego and Riva Ridge. PO set 2 records that Fall and ran 4 great races.

  • If many if you didnt know.. Secretariats stride length was 25.5 feet long:)) haha

  • All the people that say Zenyatta would beat Secretariat are out their damn minds.

  • @sjamil316 You can say that again! I'm a big fan of The Queen, but let's be realistic.

  • @sjamil316 as much as I love Zenyatta and the excitement it brought to Horse Racing...yes, you are right. Summer of '73, especially, was sheer domination. I want to see a Triple Crown winner but I do not care to ever see a horse top Secretariats Belmont performance. Some moments should remain immortal.

  • is secretariat speeding up after that long, or is other dude slowing dude? anyone have data?

  • @aesutton Yes i do.. Secretariat is actually speeding up.. Secretariats heart was much larger than most horses so he could pump more blood which means more oxygen to the lungs.. so he basicly had an antifatigue.. fatigue is when a racehorse slows down out of being tired in race:)

  • @gothicrocker123 thanks. :)

  • Fricken Amazing!!

  • I am sorry, but am I the one who understood not one word of what the announcer said? I heard, "Jasijfiej Blahth Flfueh, blah....blah....BLAH! I just could not understand!

  • Two of Big Red's triple Crown times still have NOT been beaten. This itself shows you what a TREMENDOUS horse he was. Advanced training and all and still the records stand..truly Amazing that this Super Horse brought this country together. I cannot see anything doing that again.

  • Still the Greatest accomplishment by any athlete I have ever witnessed.

  • An amazing horse and a beautiful story.

  • love u secrateriat! best race horse ever! ur im miy heart forever!

  • Uoow!=D

  • @onlypedro it's irritating when some j#c.k #s.s suggests Secretariat was a junkie. What do you know? Were you there?

  • This horse is the DEFINITION of ass whoopin'

  • Wow, just faster and faster....like an equine locomotive.

  • Im starting to think. Hansen. Is gonna be a mini secretariat. Im not saying Hansen is going to be the best horse alive but, he's really good. you should check out his maiden race and breeders cup :D he beat union rags.

  • Secretariat kicked some fuckin ass!!!!

  • Secretariat would've won the triple crown w/ Orson Welles as the jockey.

  • He was a sick fucking creature!!....I don't give fuck what any of you fuckheads say!

  • @Wondermouth1 Dear Wondermouth, it truly is a wonder your mastery of the english language is so limited that you cannot come up with better adjectives than f-bombs? In the presence of something so miraculous, perhaps it would be better for you to simply be humbled in knowing that you saw something that will never be repeated in your lifetime. Be thankful for having been a witness to such greatness...

  • @80cathryn I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong...and I was wrong!...Your right! I had a little too much to drink that night and I was angry. I apologize to you and anyone who were offended by my comment. That's not me.

  • @Wondermouth1 Dear Wonder - I'm not perfect either. It's okay. Let's find something positive out there and celebrate it. too much hatred, violence and ignorance to go around.

  • In 40-odd years of watching sports, I've never seen as dominating a performance.

  • @TheBigScat i agree and I'll throw in a tidbit thats obvious but no one seems to talk about it: Sec not only dominated the triple crown, but he won each race differently and, in amazing fashion: Derby - he stalked from the back - but finished each qrtr mile faster than the last - unprecedented - no horse ever did this; Preak - he went last to 1st in the 1st turn and not challenged rest of way; and Belmont - WR time, broke record by 2 3/5 seconds and miracle performance, 31 length margin to win

  • Unbelievable, A truly freakish performance from a truly freakish horse. I've seen some phenomenal performances in my time of watching racing in Europe but to win any race by 31 lengths is unheard of, But to do it in a classic race which forms part of the triple crown is the pinnacle. Its hard to compare performances on the dirt compared to performances on the turf but this is probably the greatest EVER thoroughbred performance on either surface. I take My hat off to you Secretariat...

  • I was forced to watch this... but I liked it . haha

  • Great question. That's not unusual for the Belmont. First, the cheap speed drops out, and lesser horses look for easier spots that open up after the Derby. Also, a dominant horse can put a bad defeat on your past performances -- not good for stud. Finally, you have to pay to nominate the horse and again to pass the entry box; I don't remember how much it was in '73, but second-place money was only $33K.

  • why the hell are there only 5 horses racing

  • @deuce4off there were a number of drops or scratches basically conceding that no one had a shot at beating secretariat. At one point there was speculation that it would indeed be a match race between Sham and Sec. And if everything played out the same way, then sec's margin of victory might have been over 40 lengths...

  • @deuce4off You'll notice how many horses ran the Kentucky Derby (about 13). After Secretariat set the track record, which still stands today, & after he accelerated past all of the horses in the first turn during the Preakness (which no horse has ever done), the owners pulled out their horses. After seeing the Belmont, which is still the WORLD record, it's not hard to figure out why. Sec not only won the 1973 TC, he set all 3 track records. NO horse in history has ever matched that. Even today.

  • @cmf4321 I DID wonder why there were so few in Belmont.......was there marginal talent that year (except for Sec & Sham?) Were other owners simply not willing to waste time/money/energy on racing against Sec? What if NO ONE had been willing to race Sec - would they have called the Belmont off that year? It IS intersting, considering HERDS of horses race in in 'modern' Belmonts - I wonder if owners are TOO GREEDY now to invest the money & time to develop a fine, singular horse like Secretariat?

  • @nin12dog First of all...there were about 13 horses in the KD. Most dropped out by the 3rd race which is the Belmont. Secretariat was breaking records so most owners withdrew their horses because there wasn't a chance any of them would win. Now the fun fact...when Man O' War raced in the Belmont, there was only 1 other horse. MOW won.

  • @cmf4321 "Be not afraid of greatness; some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them." William Shakespeare This magnificent creature is the epitome of this statement. I have seen your statements regarding Big red and being devinely touched. I cannot agree with you more. He would have gone down in history as "one of the greatest" to ever run...This performance elevated him to "the greatest" to ever run.

  • @schnucklefutz Very well stated:-)

  • @nin12dog no 1 wanted to ride against him or sham because most peeps thought that it was the match race between them

  • @deuce4off Young horses being asked to run 1 1/2 miles is unnatural. Owners put their horses in the Ky Derby to say that they were in the Derby. They looked at Secretariat and figured they were running for 2nd place anyway.

  • I've always wondered, had there not been a finish line, how far would he have just kept running like that?

  • At 1:14, you can see him switch over to what I've come to call Perfect Stride: what I believe to be the fastest speed ever achieved by any thoroughbred, ever, to this day. Watch the surrounding environment...and it looks like he's physically, not just metaphorically, flying.

  • @VampireYoshi very astute observation. Sec's stride actually lengthened. if you focus on Sec and watch Sham's stride, sham is striding what looks like 3 times for every two of sec's.

  • ...I feel really bad for that horse Sham... but Ily Secretariat

  • @ynkeclpr7 Poor Sham....He was handed a bad deal, and it's a SHAME, Sham deserved more recognition for his efforts, because he was a Fine horse! Since he was the only horse who could even TRY to win against Secretariat - He was beaten up by Pincay in every single T/C race! (I HATE all the flogggings he got during these races!). Sham was used.

  • Sucks that Secretariat is not awarded the record time at the Preakness.

  • I know its between repeated, but what a great line! ”Secretariat is widening now. He is moving like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE!”

  • @BitterBosh

    Great movie too

  • @BitterBosh

Or: "But Secretariat is ALL ALONE!"

  • At the end they had to swing the camera around to get the others behind secretariat..... i thought oh there are ya, but youre too far behind to eat secretariats dust, HA!!

  • hes my horse hero!!!!!

  • If Mike Vick was riding that savage, it would have won by more...

  • @RaiderInNY Vick This is the most stupid comment ever! Mentioning Vick's name in reference to any animal is an insult if anything.

  • @RaiderInNY And BTW, don't quote the bible while using the word "C**T". You're wasting your time in church. There's nothing bible-like coming from your mouth or your thoughts (if that's what you call them). You should put your thoughts on mute and turn the sound off. No one respects your opinion when you start with an insult. It's like the comedian who has bad material so he uses the F word instead. And what makes you so JEALOUS of Secretariat? You're a horse's ass, not a horse...LOL

  • @RaiderInNY OK - I get it: ur a sociopath. M Vick is so much lower in Intellect, Athletic Ability & INTEGRITY, Vick would be unworthy of standing in Secretariat's SHADOW. I suspect P Chenery would have Sh#t Vick's sorry/wretched/pathetic a.#.s., (& gotten away w/it! LOL), had Vick even attempted to get near Secretariat. Vick is repulsive (perhaps you also, if you enjoy brutality?). Secretariat was Noble. Secretariat garnered love and FAME; M Vick is still trying to overcome DISGUST & SHAME.

  • @RaiderInNY shut ur face

  • @RaiderInNY Secretariat did more in one day than you'll achieve in a lifetime. Eat your heart out. No one cares what you'll do in your lifetime. You'll live & die and the world will never know or care. Nameless & just another headstone. Secretariat did the supernatural & you're being so flippant about it because you're so ordinary. I guarantee that you will never have a movie honoring you. And you'll never be mentioned in any history books for doing anything relevant...but you already know that.

  • @RaiderInNY Ignorant: Secretariat was buried WHOLE; he was loved by our Nation; Secretariat was a Hero & received a Hero's burial. Conversely, M Vick is widely considered a SOCIOPATH & a depraved, violent Bully. I suspect M Vick has to maintain a VERY MODEST PROFILE, if he's ever in the company of civilized people..... You're just another TROLLLL.....

  • What an awesome horse. I get chills too when I see this. I can imagine being there and witnessing this.

  • I get goosebumps every time i see this, amazing.

  • Still remember watching this live when I was a kid. Equally inspiring today...

  • THAT IS FUCKING AMAZING!!

  • Greatest athlete in history. I weep whenever I see this race

  • I finally got to see the shed/barn he as born in last weekend in Dodswell,Va.Its next door to Kings Dominion outside of Richmond.

  • That horse was pretty fast.

How does that guy count exactly 25 lengths?

  • Greatest horse that ever lived

  • to this day the fastest belmont in history...i too watched this as a kid and i have been a sports fan my hole life and to this day that was me most impressive preformance i have ever witness.

  • WoW, it looked like a two horse race for a second !! SSSSomebody ssssstop me !!!

  • Watched the movie today - AT WORK - loved it. This was pretty amazing to watch the real deal. Awesome!

  • @ThePelican33pictures Yes sir to that, i also finished watching it 10min ago, very inspiring WAY TO GO SECRETARIAT!

  • his heart was almost half a size more than a normal horse

  • @MrDlobMusic It was actually about two and three quarters the size of a normal horse.

  • 1:56 "...but Secretariat is all alone!"

  • It's not often you get to see perfection but this was one of those times. The greatest horse ever.

  • after secretariat died they opend him up. facts state that he had a unsually big heart and lungs. this made his breathing slower and his stamina greater. secretariat is the look of a great horse racer!!! <3 he was born a champion!

  • l'm a gunsyd fan and phar lap horse lover, but after seeing this champ secretariat what a freak.they say champions win a melborne cup,but this horse would of won 2 or 3 in a row..

  • One in a BILLION!

  • Ron Turcotte who never did anything to handride Secretariat never once touched him with his whip made it almost embarrassing for the rest of the horses. But I suppose you can't really be embarrassed by being beaten by the greatest horse of the past century.

  • I hate the new racing mentality. The polytrack and turf are destroying the joy of horseracing. Ive missed the old speed-favoring classic dirt strip in leaky roof hippodromes.

  • Just watched the movie. But watching this clip is even more emotional.

  • The movie didn't do it justice. I remember watching this when I was a kid.

  • @plazindrt You might say that the movie didn't do it justice, but how many people could actually say they knew about this horse before the movie? cause i certainly didn't and therefore this movie shows a true champion to be well remembered, you'd have to be getting on in age to of known anything about this horse as just like you say you remember it when you was a kid

i do have to say that it's like a human trapped in a horses body as from what penny said about this horse is truly amazing

  • @MYBIGKINDHEART I KNEW HIM! I saw him/Belmont on TV when I was just a teenager! My MOTHER was IMPRESSED! so even then I realized Secretariat was very significant! He REALLY was famous in 1973! I prefer the REAL Sec races on UTube cause they're so authentic - I Cried when I first saw a Sec race on UTUBE (memories of my youth & happy times, maybe?). I agree, The movie was a nice way to acknowledge Secretariat - BUT the REAL THING is so much more impressive!

  • With a time machine back to the day of the year 1973 and all the money put on Secretariat !

  • There was something wrong with that horse... In a good way :D

  • ty for this video. i love watching this race. pure domination!!

  • Greatness is a concept of a state of superiority affecting a person, object, place, or in this case a horse. How anybody can watch Secratariat and not be convinced that he's the greatest horse that ever lived; seems odd to me. You can't improve on perfection and this world will never see another horse like him again. I just wish I was alive at the time to see him up close.

  • @cuback55 Greatest running horse ever, to date..... no doubt

  • If I was Sham, once Secretariat went past me on the backstretch and the jockey started whipping me, I'd turn around and tell him: "hey, you go chase this horse, asshole"

  • @bailinnumberguy .. Yup for sure and I think the whip is cruel

  • @sapphfire22 The whips don't hurt the horse, partly because the skin on their hindquarters is extremely thick. But the whip actually simulates wild horse herds; the whip simulates when the herd leader nips the hindquarters of the horses that aren't going fast enough to encourage them to move faster. It's not cruel, it's a natural stimuli. Might annoy the horse, sure, but it doesn't really hurt him.

  • @wondermouth, darling, Sham got his clock cleaned times three by Secretariat...still as exciting to see as it was that day back in '73. Poor Sham was a fine horse too, though, with the misfortune of being born in 1970. Any other year, he could have easily been the Triple Crown champion.

  • Certainly on this Belmont Stakes performance he would have beaten any horse. But too many defeats on his record to be considered the Greatest of all time. Surely Ribot or Man o' War had more consistency?

  • Like you, wondermouth1, sham was in that race and secratariat beat him by a long shot.

  • For all you people who have said Sham or any other horse could have beaten Secratariat any day, you are WRONG. Secretariat was the fastest horse in the world;the horse God built. Sham was the dark horse that came in second in THIS RACE. so all you guys, STOP MOUTHING OFF.

  • Secretariat is widening now! He is moving like a tremendous machine! Secretariat by 12! Secretariat by 14 lengths on the turn!!

  • Ribot??...Who the fuck is that?...Forget Secretariat....Sham would have kicked his ass!
