Can anyone explain me this?: In one of the Heresey books they say this : "The space maines of Ultramarine chapter are good but just because they have strenght in numbers" But in "newer" history they send 3 ultramarines to save whole planet. Why is this so?
These guys are up there in my favorites, but I have to say the Raven Guard top them for me. But I show respect for the Ultramarines for they are the Emperor's Sword.

@zybermen techniquially the Ultramarines numbers around what would normally of been 3 legions before the chapters where created. So if you included all the chapters the ultramarines made they probably have a little bit more than the SW and BTs

people say the Ultramarines are wimps, but then who holds the most territory compared to the other chapters? and who held them to the bitter end? other chapters control one planet, or even don have on and practically live of in a fleet. the Ultramarines created the tyranid hunters specialized in hunting tyranids, as they were the first ones who made contact with them in maccrage, they held maccrage but at a price, loosing the Ultramarines' 1st company.
@Jsay18 There is no "best chapter." All chapters think themselves as the best, but they don't tend to be haughty. The only case I can think of an Ultramarine spitting at other Chapters' practices were the Mortifactors, and the Mortifactors are Ultramarine successors who are rather kooky. Even then, they swallowed their pride and fought by the mortifactors.
Also, there's more Wolves and Templars than Ultramarines, since neither follow codex rules and the Wolves have trouble with successors.

@Gim6759 I'm sorry, But I'm NOT a Templar Fan. (more of a Templar Hater, I feel they are too arrogant and zealous to make proper descitons.) I believe if we doubled the Codex Marine Limit to 2000, and make every Officer Rank have to be fully screened by the Emperor's Most Holy Inquisition. (so that Corruption won't be spread.) Also, the Ultrasmurf's need to get real, They are NOT the best.

@Jsay18 Why? The Ultramarines do fine following the Codex to the letter, and other chapters that dislike the codex (Such as the Space Wolves or Black Templars) are free to have their own rules.
The Codex Astartes doesn't make a fighting force better or worse. It makes a fighting force versatile and prepared, but also more predictable.
I like the Ultramarines because I like their Roman theme, their regimented structure, and their blue/white/gold colors (Although Imperial Fists are still best).
@zybermen I will admit, that the Ultra's have a really cool paint job, and are effective.
But you obviously don't know that the Codex restricts a lot. And every Chapter that doesn't follow the Codex is thought of as inferior by the Ultra's.
I suggested a more lenient Codex because then the Ultra's would have to come to realise that they aren't the best. Hell, the only reason that they have so many numbers that arn't dieing all the time is because they Barely take part in any Conflicts.
@Jsay18 The Inquisition would question the Space Wolves and Dark Angels even if there wasn't a codex. The Space Pups have strange rituals and also hold a feud over Armageddon, while the Dark Angels do weird things to hunt the fallen and silence those who investigate.
The Ultramarines have been engaged in plenty of battles, and stopped Hive Fleet Behemoth. While they weren't present at any of the Armageddon Wars, the main reason for that is the distance between Armageddon and Ultramar.
@Jsay18 The Codex is terrrible. It had its good points, but to dictate the way your warriors can battle, and when they break doctrine you either take thier rank or send them on a suicide mission? Thats pure crazy. battles never go as they are planned and as long as your enemies dont battle with a codex then having the restrictions is a death sentence. (FOR EXAMPLE: Uriel Ventris and Pasanius. Uriel didnt follow the codex and then he fought with the deathwatch and was sent on a suicide mission)
@Mortarion89 Uriel was sent on a suicide mission for abandoning his company when they needed him to fight by their side against the Tyranids, while Pasanius was sent because of not telling them about the Xeno arm.
Pasanius was required for the mission because they were missing a flamethrower marine, but Uriel could have easily sent another veteran Ultra to support the Deathwatch while he helped his company.

The Ultramarines go through alot of shit! Ork Waagh!'s, Tyranid Incursions, Heratical Insurections, etc. These are the true example of a Space Marine.
They have evolved none since the Horus heresy they will not deviate from the codex even when it costs victory and lives. I am no heretic but the codex prevents any evolution.
No one should insult the Ultramarines they were one of the few loyalists able to help stabilize the Imperium ten years after the Horus Heresy. Courage and Honour!!!

@zybermen also, you HAVE to follow the Codex, The Wolves just don't care, and the templars can't get a good Count off the top of their heads.
Not following the Codex makes the Inquisition Question your every move, even if it's for the best of the Imperium.
The Combat Tactics i'm fine with man. It's the Restrictions of Men that i'm fighting. Every chapter makes their own tactics anyways.

The Ultramarines go through alot of shit! Ork Waagh!'s, Tyranid Incursions, Heratical Insurections, etc. These are the true example of a Space Marine.

They have evolved none since the Horus heresy they will not deviate from the codex even when it costs victory and lives. I am no heretic but the codex prevents any evolution.
