The reason that you don't find any writings in Italian from Columbus is because he was essentially illiterate until his adult life which was lived abroad in countries like Portugal and Spain. The reason that you don't find any writings in Italian from Columbus is because he was essentially illiterate until his adult life which was lived abroad in countries like Portugal and Spain. During his time the Portuguese were leading the world in navigation and he learned most of his advanced seamanship from the Portuguese. He even married a Portuguese woman and is buried in Portugal.

I dont think Columbus set out to kill people, but only to find them and/or a new route to the East - near India, and perhaps make some money to pay back the people who financed his vision. Eventually, all the people in the Americas got independence, and the land is to be shared with the Native Americans. There is no tiime to squabble over it now, but only to make a brighter future.

Hmmm... They didnt mention 2 things. 1. Columbus wrote his diary on greek 2. His cousin George Palaiologos had some fights with him over some landpieces in Chios. I think a man with a greek name, greek handwriting, greek relatives and who owns some hectars land there in Chios cant be nothing but greek. to the average person. Columbus also had two journals: an official book written in Latin and a Greek journal which documented all of his discoveries. The "Byzantine Royalty" aspect of the argument(or any other form of royalty for that matter) is the only possible conceivable way that anyone could gather an audience with foreign royalty. My gut feeling tells me that history has been altered here. With all the points that have been made here I challenge anyone to prove to me that he was not Greek.

Not that I'm a big fan of columbus(I don't see what the big deal is about him) but there are some very strong suggestions that he was Greek. What should have been mentioned in this video was that all of his crew were Greeks and that columbus is a Greek name. People who believe that the illiterate family of Genoa could produce someone who could gather an audience with foreign royalties and command ships should seriously read a history book to get an idea of how unapproachable royalty was back...

I am of Italian Ancestry, my grandparents were Italian Immigrants and spoke Italian around me while I was growing up ( had no idea what they were saying). But I have more Spanish influence culturally because I have spent more time in Florida than anywhere else. I also know more of the Spanish language than Italian. When I was a child, I lived in Italy for four years and I had relatives that lived close by ( had no idea what they were saying either). Point is, people the world over are the same.

He never wrote in Greek.. What you see in:
"XpõFerens" is two words (one in greek the other in latin) witch mean "Christopher".
In that time, it was usuall for all intelectual men particulary those who used to uncover their identity to employd greek and latin words. That doesn't means they were greek!! :-))
In addition Columbus wrote "Xpõ" with a portuguese "~" on the letter "O" and not the greek Omega as the greeks do!
