The first thing that pops into my mind when seeing these kings of comedy is: "Gentlemen." There were a lot gentlemen from their era. Not so many today.
Harold Lloyd, Chaplin & Keaton never really made an impression on me. Stan & Ollie were something special. Tit for Tat is my favourite film of theirs.
For me, that what makes L&H stand out so much in my mind is that at the end of the day; they liked each other. They were brilliant artisans of their craft, no doubt. Yet, when the director yelled CUT for the final shoot Stanley Laurel Jefferson from the south of London & Oliver Norville "Babe" Hardy from Georgia, USA; had dinner together, with their wives, that night. Unlike Abbot & Costello, etc; who couldn't stand each other off camera...L&H were pals. I deeply respect & appreciate that.Peace
@BearyHairy Laurel & Hardy weren't quite as close as you let on, though professionally they did have the consummate relationship but ultimately they were two very different people.
Laurel was totally fascinated by the entire craft of film making and also worked very hard behind the camera; Hardy "just acted" (now there's an understatement!) and just left the studio at quitting time.
Stan was a good family man while Hardy enjoyed racetracks, gambling dens and cat houses!!
The word "Legend" is used too often today. These gentlemen, were the epitome of legends. May their film live on forever. I'm off to watch way out west
looks like alot of my grand parents old home movies, just lacking the pop top hams beer and my aunts and uncles beating each other up.still nice to see.
There is some footage on here somewhere of Stan in his study with his Golden Globe. I wish I could find it again, it isn't well labelled but it's priceless.
@Maximus99664 ... they were the best of friends right till the end when Hardy was on his death bed. Laurel regretted he couldn't go to his old pal's funeral because of his own failing health but said "Babe would understand" ... his pet name for Hardy.
@dcanmore Yeah I watched some more documentary footage and the 'this is your life' clip. I don't know where I got the idea, must have confused them with another comedy duo.
I've seen this in a documentary the fat one lost weight because he had a heart attack he had to lose weight fast. Even though he managed to lose the weight he died anyway. The skinny one the smoker smoking causes strokes they didn't know that then.
@PigsyCyberBully ... he was suffering from terminal cancer but only a few people knew about it including Laurel. It has been said that was the real cause of his dramatic weight loss.
Was Ollie ill to loose that weight or did he just diet? There should be a movie biography of these two. Any ideas as to who would play them anyone? Jack Black for Hardy? Jim Carey for Stan?
I wish i didn't watch this now as its made me sad to see them like this, If only the world realized how much we owe these guys for making comedy what it is today.
Gone from this world but never gone from my heart.. Forever Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy.....
Stan, of the Laurel and Hardy legend crossed over on 23rd February, 1965. Before dying, he quipped to his nurse that he'd like to go skiing. When she asked if he was a skier he said: "No, but I'd rather be skiing than doing what I'm doing." A comedian to the end, and a star that'll forever shine.
wonderfull clips...Oliver (Babe) Hardy, suffered a massive stroke shortly after this was filmed, leaving him incapeable of movement, or speech,,,his wife, Lucille, bravely endured, and did all she could, but he passed on several months later
@codyj0999 Yes -- according to his obituary in the New York Times, Oliver Hardy died on August 7, 1957, about 11 months after suffering a stroke. He was 65.
ya Oliver Hardy gone with in a year of this film we all know why.. it was not a heart attack as most would imagin but somthing that kills us all ......:(
I love how a guy meets a friend for lunch in his backyard and wears a suit: Class. A home in the new post-war suburbs of So CA and cigarettes all around.
So wonderful! I recall Stan Laurel wound up with no money and lived in a motel. (He said he thought it was funny.) Mrs. Hardy sued to have have the copyright of her husband's likeness and won. These were entertainers that gave the American people the willingness to go on living during the Great Depression. Laugh, clown, laugh.
Stan and Oliver were not only the greatest comedians the world will ever see, but they were also natures Gentlemen. They will never be forgoten. GOD BLESS LAUREL AND HARDY.
@whitbyjet65 Indeed, from all accounts they were not only incredibly talented but modest with it. Words like 'timeless' and 'genius' are over-used, but in their case such words hardly even begin to describe them. True geniuses, true gents - literally incomparable.
@palexandersquires google "beau hunks" They are a dutch orchestra that put out a couple cds over 10 years ago reproducing the Hal Roach music (Laurel and Hardy, and Little Rascals)
In fact he looked a bit like Popeye the Sailor Man. Well, some of that weight loss MAY have been caused by cancer. Tho it allowed him some months of life after that vicious stroke from which he never recovered but was left totally helpless, physically and mentally.
Two old but awesome men! They were the best and will always be, i have shown films of laurel & hardy to the younger generation, they never fail to be loved and appreciated, they will live on forever!
Oi i am brasileiro do morro here in brazil i have 26 years i am fa the talent of them here in brasil nao is replaced by very must enquando ue hopes that tenhao liked my cometario
Stan Laurel also made role of charlin chaplin when true does not mean he was in his place was broken twig vc repair as well until they saom little like my opinion
Stan lived his last years in an apartment in Oceana Hotel,in Santa Monica. Jerry Lewis was one of many comedians who visited, making their suggestions for the production of a Bellboy (1960). Victim Died of a heart attack at 74 years. His body is buried in Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles
In August 7, 1957, Oliver Hardy died, 65 years; Laurel did not appear to his funeral, because he was working on "Babe Compreenderia". Laurel has decided, from then on, not more work without his friend so much time, and decided to write for comedies. Friends said that Laurel will be totally wiped out after the death of Hardy, without ever having been recovered
The two comedians have worked together for the first time in silent film a Lucky Dog (1921) .After a period appearing separately in several short films in the studio of Hal Roach during the 1920s, they began to act together in 1926. Laurel and Hardy became officially a double in the next year, and soon became the stars more profitable to Hal Roach
Double of humorist began 1920 Composed of a thin, the english Stan Laurel (1890- 1965) and a fat, the american Oliver Hardy (1892- 1957), the dual became known during the decades of 1920 and 1930 for his work in films, comedy and also appeared in theatrical presentations in America and Europe
Great but rather sad to see... hope nobody minds me saying that I was slightly disappointed that their al-fresco meal didn't end up with a massive slapstick foodfight.
Private silent video filmed by either family or friends. nice to see them both in a casual setting. got most of their films and i do still watch them, my fav comedy duo.
It's painful to see them look so old and unwell, but they'll never be forgotten for the amazing films they made. They were as close as friends could be and that's lovely to watch.
I agree that its nice they were that close friends, but I do not think they look that old and unwell. After all Stan was 66 years old and Oliver 64 - so they were not teenagers anymore.
In 1956 Oliver Hardy lost 150 pounds over a relative short period of time, as he was looking more for his health at that time.
But both of them being heavy smokers, that naturally has an impact on their health.
@flipinwotsit Yes, Oliver Hardy DID lose too much weight too fast. That super diet was probably the chief cause of that massive stroke he suffered in September 1956, shortly after this video was made. He died about 11 months later.
Oliver Hardy passed away the next year (1957) and when he learned of his death, Stan Laurel said, "I will never work again, because my partner is gone." And, true to his word, Stan Laurel never worked again.
@owlie1961 By then, the cigarette companie scientists had figured out that cigarette smoking had dangerous health effects, but the industry was keeping this research to itself. Cigarette smoking was touted as being beneficial to your health and doctors told this to their patients (like in the King' Speech when Bertie tells Lionel that all of his knighted medical doctors had told him that smoking was beneficial for his throat). So Stan's doctors probably didn't think twice about his smoking.
