  • Love these old ads.

    Thanks for posting!

    George Vreeland Hill

  • that was coach George Allen with Sonny

  • Sonny J. later was a sportscaster for WTOP/WDVM/WUSA CBS 9 Washington, D.C.

  • Actually, I think that Cigar commercials were on television well into the 1970s. If Susan Anton was pitching Muriels, it had to be later than 1971.

  • Correct. Cigar commercials were phased out more slowly than cigarette commercials.

Give the man a cigar! :)

  • @mss2400 I remember cigar commercials into the late 70s and maybe up to 1980. Jimmy the Greek's segment on the CBS NFL pre-game was sponsored by Dutch Masters.

  • Sonny Jurgensen and George Allen actually couldn't stand each other.

But I guess it was easy money.

  • You got that right ! Billy Kilmer was his boy, and Allen tried to create a rivelry between them. Never happened .

  • When were cigar ads banned from TV?

  • January 2, 1971.

  • @smittykins I know cigarette ads were banned Jan. 1, 1971, and I'm sure that smokeless tobacco [snuff; chew] was banned in 1987. Cigars, I think, were somewhere between those years. However, just a year or 2 ago I remember hearing some Black & Mild cigar ads on radio, which is regulated the same as television. Not sure how those came about.

  • I remember the old "Tipperillo" commercials, or something like that: "Won't you pick one up and...smoke it sometime!"

  • WookieCookie: Do you have any late 1970's Muriel Cigars commercials with Susan Anton?
