Invasion of Sicily Newsreel (Operation HUSKY - July 1943)

My Dad was on the ammunition ship, S.S. Robert Rowan, shown in this newsreel, which was hit by Luftwaffe bombs and exploded. A few hours before that, it was hit by a artillery round fired from shore. The Luftwaffe also strafed the beaches. A number of American planes, carrying paratroopers, were also accidentally shot down at night by American anti-aircraft gunners. Further, the fighting around Gela was fierce. This newsreel seems to have been propaganda. Not very accurate.

My grandfather was 2nd wave Gela Beach with the 4th Beach Battalion. This newsreel makes the landing seem like a cakewalk. My grandpa told me his sector was under fire including vehicles hitting land mines on the beach.
