THERES BEEN A LOTTA BOBBY SONGS SUNG ABOUT ME, BUT THIS IS MY FAV, BECAUSE I AM SO IN LOVE WITH THIS GIRL. NEVER SEEN A SWEET THING AS PHOTOGENIC AND TALENTED AS THIS RAVEN BEAUTY
This is my favorite Sylvia song. When I had a free format radio shift in college I played this song quite frequently. I was really happy when RCA included this song on their 2002 RCA Country Legends: Sylvia CD. Because I previously only had it on vinyl and cassette. I also thanked them, for including it, by playing the song a few times on those internet jukeboxes at local pizza places.
I like the song, but the historian must wade in: The Battle of Vicksburg was in 1863, when it fell to the Union. The second line sounds like she says, "Such is the fate of Atlanta." Atlanta's "fate"ful burning was not until 1864. However, a copy of the lyrics online say it's "Such is the fate of that lantern." Which is it she is singing?
Actually this is a good song. It did portray what southern women went through at the end of the Civil War. Vicksburg was one of the bloodiest battles in the civil war. Nice job on the song though.
I'm Sylvia's BIGGEST fans. It's too bad that she never made a video for this. All of the LP's shown in this video I have in my possession as well. Best female singer who ever lived.... PERIOD!!! :-)
I had a tape of this when I was a little girI... and I loved it! The other night....I was laughing about how dramatic it is... I was just telling my husband about it...can't wait to to share it with him :D Thanks for posting!!
@jab1107 Don't know what bothers me most, that you had this when you were a little girl, or that I had already been stationed in south east asia and several other countries in the Air Force when it came out. I'll go limp over to my Wheel Chair and Geritol and coke now.
@hwnrdnck Hey sorry if I offended. I always enjoyed the longing conveyed in her voice and the story offered in this song. Music just isn't like that anymore, or if it is it is rare and not likely being played on the radio. BTW thanks for your service, I know I and many others are thankful and appreciative for the freedoms we enjoy.
One of my favorite Sylvia songs, too, and it was always a crowd pleaser when done at her shows. One of her best non-singles, as well as You Can't Go Home Again and The Mill Song.

this song is really cool, too bad RCA didn't have Sylvia do a video for this song. Their mistake. she does a good job with this story song.
