  • songs like this help me forget all the shitty ones we have flowing around this world these days

  • Very good, Byrn. But as he did with 16 Tons (which I've never heard anyone else sing particularly well) TE Ford hits a certain "sweet spot" with his version of Shenandoah that is hard to beat.

  • Shut up all of you. This is a splendid version and his delivery is blissful!

  • @welshbiker007 and he IS from wales

  • bryn does the song justice one of the best tenors out of wales

  • @welshbiker007 Bryn Terfel is a Baritone/Bass. NOT a Tenor.

  • his voice could make me sleep!

  • He apparently is actually an opera singer..what a majestic voice!

  • Most singers sing with their voice, Bryn Terfel sings with his Heart.

  • Loved it! Deffinately belongs on a stage with a full audience.... Please comment on my daughter Lauren Woodward age 10 singing 'Calon Lan' or 'Castle on a Cloud'. I have listened to this voice for years and would appreicate any comments from someone of such good taste. Thanksxx

  • Fabulous version! - Arlo Guthrie's less orchestrated version is also just as beautiful!

  • what's with the owl lol

  • He has a great voice. I'm not entirely certain why those of the British Isles feel the need to make everything sound British, however. I have yet to hear a version of "Danny Boy" played with an electric guitar.

  • I'm like, in love with this guy...

  • I'm speechless. it's absolutely beautiful...this song has always reminded me of ''Danny Boy''

  • Talk about self-expression :) what an artist.

  • eres grande terfel!

    saludos desde mexico.

  • @gymnosophy - seriously. i just play the song and don't even watch the video

  • Great song ruined by insincere ham acting and awful direction.

  • My class and I are singing this in choir i'm in 7th grade,, its beautiful!!!

  • BRILLIANT!

  • This is so very beautiful.

  • It is the most beautiful place in my country..our Eden and this version is sublime. Thank you for posting it.

  • @RachTrinity Top posting friend, S

  • it is the most beautiful place in the world...my country, Eden to us here.

  • I know nothing about this song and little of the singer, and yet it is so deep and haunting, it means something I cannot explain...thank you..

  • Lol, I go to Shenandoah Conservatory.

  • This is wonderful. Shenandoah was written by a man from Ulster who emigrated to America and there he fell in love.

  • Sure, Bryn's good, but Paul Robeson's got to be the standard for this song.

TN Ernie Ford, while a bit too sweet, does a nice job too

  • This is the american folk song Shenandoah i told you about...cos of your TSHIRT !

  • @iloverock16 still prefer Welsh folk songs tho by far

  • Awesome singer, Awesome song, especially since it sounds Irish, which is all the more why this song should be just Awesome :)

  • I only just made an account to get access to Bryn Terfel on You Tube.

What enrichment! I was at his concert in Amsterdam about a year ago. fell in love with his music, wit, openness towards the public , him.

Not to worry: i shall not stalk him since I am 68 years old.

    Marianne

  • @poot0203 Isn't this recording simply perfect. He's such a wonderful singer...and I understand a wonderful gentleman also. I'm a few yers younger than you, but way beyond the stalking age, too. :-)

  • Good but just listen to Paul Robeson's version.

  • the chanter is the exact sane in both the uilleann and bag pipes but the uillean pipes hav a far softer sound because they are made for fireside sessions and indoor playing :-)

  • It sounds like an Irish song especially with the Uilleann pipes and tin whistle, good version though I like it.

  • Could someone tell me who is the composer of this beautiful piece?

  • Shenandoah - a sea chantey. That's all the music says. The version I have is for TTBB, arranged by Philip Gehring, copyright 1960. Hope this helps.

  • @crystalsingr You are right. It is a sea chantey and was some how associated with the fur trade and mountain men in the early 1800's. The body of water in the song is the Missouri River and Shenandoah is an Indian Chief.

  • This isbeautiful but...I HATE the way he is saying Shenandoah. it lacks the same tenderness he sings the rest of the peice with when it should have more expression and legato. He does sing this better than a lot of his American counterparts. lol

  • Uilleann pipes are often referred to as Irish Bagpipes. While the air delivery to the reed is different (bellows vs mouth inflated bag) they are close cousins. Perhaps the most discernible difference however is that Uileann can play all the notes in a chromatic scale so it can play all melodies where the Scottish Pipes can not giving them their trademark sound.

  • They can't play all the notes in a chromatic scale.......

  • I am probably misinformed, but the Irish pipes can certainly play in more key signatures and are not limited as the Scottish pipes are.

  • Uilleann pipes can't...

  • An American song and yes I know he's Welch but this is still the best version I've heard !

  • Absolutely perfect.

  • Bryn's voice fits this song PERFECTLY. Simply Beautiful. Best version I've heard.

  • @spokeshole I love Bryn Terfel's version but my all time favorite is an incomplete version of it sung as the main title theme to the movie "Morning Becomes Electra," with an all male chorus. I'd dearly love to have a complete recording of it by that group. Unfortunately, the movie, which starred Rosalind Russell and Raymond Massey, came out around 1950. So I don't have hopes of getting the chorus back together.

  • @Thorwald88 A few corrections on my post. It's "mourning," not "morning" and you can hear that main title chorus by going to the film clips on youtube. And BTW, the film came out in 1947.

  • @Thorwald88 You can hear the full film intro version by searching for "Mourning Becomes Electra" and then playing "Part I"

  • @spokeshole Ernie Ford did it best, in my opinion. Bryn does have a gorgeous voice tho. Search: Shenandoah - Tennessee Ernie Ford

You'll be glad you did :)

  • @Caeridwyn I agree with you there. I also prefer Tennessee Ernie Ford´s version. Even though I have to admit that this one is close. :-)

  • @spokeshole I totally agree. However, his delivery of the song does not remind of the Shenandoah River but the beautiful lakes in the British Isles, especially with the instrumental accompaniment!

  • incredibly beautiful... the singer, the recorder/bagpipe player, video... integration of everything... now that's art...

  • It is a tin whistle not a recorder.

  • @darnmat The pipes in this song are the Irish pipes.Which replaced the traditional Celtic pipes in Ireland after the English outlawed the"War Pipes" in Ireland.

  • @steeleydan65 Well OK. If you say so. But I don't suppose any pipes are banned in Ireland now. Ireland and England are at peace today after all the sad centuries past. This year, Queen Elizabeth is making an official visit to the Republic. As an English dude of Irish origin, I'm pleased about this. Is that permissible?

  • @darnmat Bagpipes???...those are the uileann pipes from Ireland!

  • The flute is amazing here ...

  • Bryn has the most beautiful voices of them all. I especially like when he sings Welsh songs. It makes me dream away. This one is also so inspiring and just beautiful:)

  • Uh, bagpipe? And I do hate it when he croons.

  • They are Uilleann Pipes...not bagpipes.

  • Isn't that a type of bagpipe?

  • Comment removed

  • It's not "croon" ing if you have the talent to carry it off; which he does. Also, the Uilleann Pipes are traditional.

  • You can tell he's not an American...

He didn't voice the s in Missouri!

  • i played this song on my viola....i love this song it's so gorgeous.. :]

  • Bryn is awesome, nothing less! I never thought angels would be so big as Bryn...! He redefines how to sing all these lovely songs! Great Bryn!!!

  • Just love to hear this man sing

  • Bryn is a master...

  • Couldn't be better.

  • This is a master work.

  • its beuatiful

  • Let's hear it for uilleann pipes and opera stars joining forces! I couldn't be happier. :)
