This track is from "Missing Period" released on the Outer Music Label in 1997 and currently out of print. I am fairly certain it is from the 2 week residency the band did at Ronnie Scott's in September 1976, tracks from which of course appear on the "Livestock" album. All the tracks from the BBC Maida Vale sessions recorded for John Peel's Top Gear show are what was released on "Missing Period".
This was the first song I ever listened to going from old cheapo headphones to my brand new hifi studiophones. blew my mind, how you can hear every little miniscule detail going on so clearly and lifelike, especially with the drumming, freaking amazing..
Some great funky strat in the middle of all that fusion! Something's not quite right with Collins' drumming though. Lenny White might have been better in this track. Just thinking.
I'm not sure if this was recorded at Ronnie Scott's, the album that I have this recording from is the "Missing Period" album, which was recorded sometime between '75 - '76, so it could be, but I don't know.
As far as the Maida Vale sessions/rejected/Vertical Invaders albums, these are things that I've searched what feels like to the end of the internet for and still can't find recordings. All I can find is dates.
I think I can get the Maida Vale sessions, though. I'm working on it
From what I have just read, it seems the only surviving tracks from the Vertical Invader session have been included on the X Files - A Twenty Year Retrospective. They are tracks 15 and 16.
@SpagsJippy This is from ronnie scott's I have rock around the world on LP, great show, i will upload malaga virgin from it great version, thier rejected album had earler recordings of tales of ancient mysteries(Underwater), kugelblitz (Kubic Blitz), Born Ugly (Dead Pretty) & two unknown tunes 1 tune was played live at the nashville rooms (search it up &download it) the other was a 1975 radio broadcast called Moammar hope this helps
I remember the Indian place it was off of South Street Near 3rd or 4th street.between Front and South I enjoy Gong as well. Are you Still in Philly? I'm in Az. now have been for 10 years almost. You mentioned that you played, with who??? My name is Breeze by the way.
The final release from the initial period is "Is There Anything About?" which surely is long out of print, except in the Far East, probably. . .good thing they ended at that time; the albums were getting weaker. X-Communication and Manifest Destingy are OK, but not like the late '70's period, IMHO.
The chemistry has gone, man. It's as simple as that. Different eras, different influences, different ages...
Even the Brand X live cd (in trio: John Goodsall - Percy Jones - Frank Katz or Ken Dennard, can't remember) was disappointing to me. I remember bringing it back to Tower Records in NYC to get my money back. How could the guys that made "Livestock" could now produce such a boring live?..
I assume it was me, not them. Those three cats are great musicians, ad Ken is one of the best drummers around. I just felt something was "missing", especially on the production level, but it was only my personal taste. I guess I'd have enjoyed seeing them live, as you luckily did.
I couldn't agree more. "Do they hurt?" is unbelievably good, but I dont know what happened since then...
Tunnels are ok, but you know, they're not Brand X. I don't want to compare, that can quickly become annoying, but the 5 musicians you hear here, that's what I call a one-off.
Cool number. IMO Unorthodox was their best album, side A is arguably one of the best sides of any jazz-rock-fusion release. The pics show a Morris Pert, is he related to Neil Pert of Rush?
That's just downright NASSSSSTY! Love it. These guys have the coolest vibe and chemistry. I was fortunate to see a recent incarnation some years ago at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly. No keyboardist, but Goodsall and Percy more than made up for it. Great writing executed by great musicians. What a concept!
How long ago? I worked for Steve Mountain who owned the 3 cabarets and I don't remember them ever playing there. Been a fan since '76 when Unorthodox was released. They did however play The Otherside In Delaware about that time'[morrocon roll] was released
I am notoriously bad with years, but i believe it was in support of their Manifest Destiny cd-think Frank katz was the drummer, but i am positive it was at The Chestnut. They also did a show at an Indian restaurant that i used to play at (with Gong, no less!) that i didn't go to whose name escapes me. It was down near front street in Philly...i'm still kicking myself to this day! If i find the ticket stub I'll let you know.
Hey Breeze! You are correct (and scaring me!)! Used to play there with a reggae band called Tree of Life. Now i play with Reflexx. Have you heard any of Percy Jones' work with Brian Eno? Incredible! And, yes I'm still in Philly. If you feel like it, e-mail me at Abernathykirk@yahoo.

Do you know if this is the same Tito's Leg that was recorded at Ronnie Scott's and broadcast on the BBC program 'Rock around the world' ?
Were both BBC Maida Vale sessions ever released ?
What happened to the first 'rejected' album ?
Did John Goodsall's Vertical Invader' demos ever surface ?

this was there best album, it was recorded in mid 1975, but wasn't released until 1997.
john goodsall's daughter was looking through old tapes and found "missing period". she showed it to john, then he wanted it on an album

I don't know if you had ear plugs on when you listened to it, but I remember it pretty happenin. Dennard did a smokin' job on it and I saw them live.

I agree with you. This was an excellent album.
And, no, Morris Pert was not related to Neil Peart. See the two last names? Just a bit different. =]
thanks for your comment!

Those early Brand X albums were genius. Morrocon Roll was really inspired.
